Aimed at an international readership, this book offers a representative collection of essays by the German philosopher, Georg Picht (1913-1982), who was a specialist in Greek philosophy, practical philosophy and philosophy of religion. Picht's themes address different disciplines, such as ancient philosophy, systematic philosophy and political analysis, and often contain critical statements on significant developments from the European Enlightenment to the Cold War era. Other essays offer a distinctive interdisciplinary approach characteristic of the author. Der Aufforderung Herrn Prof. Westphals, fur die von ihm herausgegebene Sammlung" Die Wissenschaft" eine Monographie uber die Beugungstheorie der optischen Abbildung und ihrer Fehler zu schreiben, bin ich gern nachgekommen. Liegt doch bisher ausser einer Buchveroffentlichung von Prof. K. Strehl ), einem Handbuchartikel von Prof. F. Jentzsch 2) und einem weiteren (kurzen) Handbuchartikel von Dr. A. Konig 3) meines Wissens weder eine deutsche noch eine fremdsprachliche zusammen fassende Darstellung dieses auch fur die Praxis allmahlich an Bedeutung gewinnenden Teilgebietes der \Vellenoptik vor. Bei der Anlage des vorliegenden Buches war ursprunglich eine viel weitergehende Behandlung der einschlagigen Frage- besonders auch die Anwendung der abgeleiteten Formeln auf die Abbildung im Mikroskop ') - geplant. Da das Buch aber schon jetzt - trotz starker Kurzung des fertigen Manuskripte- den vereinbarten Umfang wesentlich uberschritten hat, so konnte jener Plan n cht durchgefuhrt werden. Ich hoffe aber, die Grund lagen doch so weit entwickelt zu haben, dass eine Beschaftigung mit den spezielleren Problemen keine besonderen Schwierigkeiten mehr bieten wird.
