This volume will provide the first English translation of Ralph
Niger's critical reflection on military pilgrimage, written in the
late 1180s in response to the calling of the Third Crusade. Long
known to scholars as early and highly idiosyncratic critique of
crusading, On Warfare and the Threefold Path of the Jerusalem
Pilgrimage provides a sustained reflection on penance, the meaning
of Jerusalem, and the challenges of military expeditions to the
Levant. After the fall of Jerusalem in 1187, Ralph resisted the
calls to crusade and instead exhorted Christians to look inward and
build Jerusalem in their hearts. Throughout the four books of the
work, Ralph looks to scripture for precedents for crusading and
finds none. However, by ranging widely over examples of Old
Testament violence and considering the Heavenly and Earthly
Jerusalem together, On Warfare offers a unique perspective on how
the Bible informed contemporary views of the Crusades. Methodically
examining pilgrimage through the lens of scripture, Ralph surveys
the entire semantic field of crusading, and concludes that
Christian knights could do more good by staying home than going on
a military adventure to the Holy Land.
New insights into key texts and interpretive problems in the
history of England and Europe between the eighth and thirteenth
centuries. This volume of the Haskins Society Journal demonstrates
the Society's continued interest in a broad range of geographical
contexts and methodological approaches to medieval history.
Chapters include a much-needed reassessment of AElfthryth and her
place in the society and governance of tenth-century England, as
well as a comprehensive survey of the conceptualization of
excommunication in post-Carolingian Europe to c.1200. Further
essays explore aspects of the Norman world of southern Italy,
including the dynamics of political coalitions and kinship
networks, ethnic identity, and material culture. The Journal
continues to highlight close analyses of key primary sources, with a
study of Angevin kingship in the writings of Hugh of Lincoln and
Adam of Eynsham, and an examination of Ralph of Niger's Old
Testament exegesis and criticism of crusading in the late twelfth
century. A ground-breaking newstudy assesses the utility of
colonialism as a valid model for understanding the extraction of
sacred resources and relics from the crusader lands. The volume
closes with a crucial reconsideration of the agency and power of
medieval French peasants as attested in medieval cartularies,
opening new approaches for further research into this critical and
complex social group.
This volume contains the usual wide range of topics, and offers
some unusual and provocative perspectives, including an examination
of what the evidence of zooarchaeology can reveal about the
Conquest. The other subjects discussed are the battle of AlenAon;
the impact of rebellion on Little Domesday; Lawrence of Durham;
Thomas Becket; Peter of Blois; Anglo-French peace conferences;
episcopal elections and the loss of Normandy; Norman identity in
southern Italian chronicles; and the Normans on crusade. The
contributors, from Germany, France and Denmark as well as Britain,
and the United States, are RICHARD BARTON, NAOMI SYKES, LUCY
MARTEN, MIA MA1/4NSTER-SWENDSEN, JOHN D. COTTS, J.E.M. BENHAM, JARG
PELTZER, JULIE BARRAU, EMILY ALBU, EWAN JOHNSON, G. A. LOUD, HANNA
VOLLRATH.
Between 1095 and 1229, Western Europe confronted a series of
alternative cultural possibilities that would fundamentally
transform its social structures, its intellectual life, and its
very identity. It was a period of difficult decisions and anxiety
rather than a triumphant "renaissance."
In this fresh reassessment of the twelfth century, John D. Cotts:
- shows how new social, economic and religious options challenged
Europeans to re-imagine their place in the world
- provides an overview of political life and detailed examples of
the original thought and religious enthusiasm of the time
- presents the Crusades as the century's defining movement.
Ideal for students and scholars alike, this is an essential
overview of a pivotal era in medieval history that arguably paved
the way for a united Europe.
