While there are many areas of focus in mathematics education, there
are many good reasons for offering applicable mathematics education
in schools. Let us just mention two of the most important reasons.
On the one hand, a focus on the practical side of mathematics
presents a convincing and motivating answer to the typical student
question: 'Why study mathematics?' On the other hand, education
policy seems inclined to move in this direction by implementing
international testing, curricula and catalogues of skills. The most
important feature of this book is that the authors speak directly
to you, the mathematics teachers. The authors attempt to draw you
into a continuous dialogue about activities you are asked to engage
in as learners. You are asked to do something, and through doing
and reflecting you will gain first-hand experience of new
approaches and materials. In this way, you can learn to teach
applicable mathematics to your students using your own experience
as learners of applicable mathematics, motivated and supported by
the book. Here applicable mathematics education is the phrase we
use to describe reality-based mathematics education. Reality-based
mathematics relies heavily on problem solving and a positive
disposition to engage with mathematics. Modelling reality and
simulating selected aspects of reality are other pillars of
reality-based mathematics education.
'I'd been in Claybury for four months before I was given ECT. I was
sixteen. The day I went down for it I was wearing a striped
hospital dressing gown and yellow pyjamas. I'd been given the Last
Rites.' John O'Donoghue was first admitted to Claybury asylum with
manic depression aged sixteen, just after his mother had been
institutionalised. He spent over a decade in asylums, halfway
houses, therapeutic communities, hostels for homeless men, squats,
and on the streets. Sectioned is an honest and moving account of
his experiences. It is also ultimately the story of his survival
against the odds, and of his coming of age in a Britain that was
changing forever.
Early Irish cultural societies were a marked and honoured feature
of intellectual life in urban areas, particularly in the 18th and
19th centuries. These societies, like their British counterparts,
had enormous influence on educational developments in the centres
where they were based. In Ireland these societies and institutions
were places where Irish Gentlemen, and later Irish Ladies, engaged
in intellectual conversations about emerging subjects such as
chemistry and natural philosophy (physical sciences). This book
attempts to shine a light on the Irish learned societies where
chemistry was debated and taught. It features (among others) the
Royal Dublin Society, the Royal Irish Academy, the UCC Chemical
Society, the Chemical Association of Ireland, the Belfast Natural
History Society, the Royal Galway Institution, The Royal Cork
Institution, The Limerick Philosophical Society, The Waterford
Institution and the history of chemistry in Irish Universities.
