This book deals with a wide range of current development issues
relating to subjects including community management, groundwater,
health and disease, institutional development, irrigation,
sanitation, solid waste management, water quality, water sources,
water supply and water treatment. It presents over forty papers
presented at the 19th WEDC Conference held in Accra, Ghana, in
1993. Material is drawn from countries in all parts of the world.
Intended for professionals, administrators or engineers, project
managers or policymakers and trainers or workers in the field of
health, water and sanitation, this book brings together a series of
short and illustrated introductions to the main technologies and
processes in the field of village and community level water and
sanitation. Developed and tested over the years, the 32
"appropriate technologies" described here range from household
water storage to public standposts, from making soap to eye and
skin diseases.;Each short brief concludes with an indication of
where to go for more information, and Professor John Pickford sets
the scene for the programme and project workers who will find this
"ideas tank" invaluable.;Originally published individually in
"Waterlines", a magazine devoted to low-cost water and sanitation,
this consolidated publication brings together a body of practical
information and guidance which appropriately marks the end of the
"Water Decade" and the start of the "Health for All by 2000"
campaign.
This text contains 40 papers selected from the 21st WEDC
conference, held in Kampala in 1995, on the theme of sustainability
of water and sanitation systems.;Developing countries experience
special difficulties in maintaining systems in full working order,
so maintenance is a recurring topic. Other topics include the
sustainable development of underground and surface water resources,
and sustainable hygiene education to enable communities to derive
long-term benefits from new or improved facilities.;The majority of
the papers in this book are based on practical experience in trying
to ensure that the systems in which the authors were involved were
planned for, and implemented, with long term sustainability in
mind. Most of the experience presented is from across Africa.
This work examines the different aspects of, and the issues
surrounding, affordable water supply and sanitation. It examines
both "software" aspects - people, communities, health, management
and institutions - as well as technological considerations such as
waste management. The book comprises over 40 papers presented at
the 20th WEDC Conference held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1994. The
material is drawn from countries in all parts of the world. The
Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), based at
Loughborough University of Technology, is concerned with education,
training, research and consultancy for the planning, provision and
management of physical infrastructure for development in low- and
middle-income countries.

Provides detailed practical and technical advice intended to guide
the selection, design, construction, and maintenance of on-site
facilities for the removal of human excreta. Addressed to
engineers, sanitarians, medical officers, and project planners, the
book concentrates on technical options suitable for householders
building their own latrines, whether in small communities, rural
areas, or deprived urban settlements. Details range from line
drawings illustrating features of design and construction, through
a list of reasons why improved sanitation may elicit negative
responses from users, to instructions for calculating the internal
dimensions of a septic tank. The book features eleven chapters in
three parts. Chapters in the first part introduce the foundations
of sanitary practice, describe the links between excreta and
disease, and explain the numerous social and cultural factors that
must be considered at the planning phase. Chapters in the second
and most extensive part provide a detailed technical guide to the
design, construction, operation and maintenance of all the main
options for on-site sanitation.Chapters describe how the different
types of latrine work, discuss their relative merits, and set out
detailed plans for the construction of latrines and their
components. The final part features three chapters on the planning
and development of on-site sanitation projects, underscoring the
need for a thorough analysis of cultural as well as design
features. "...an intriguing book..." - International Journal of
Environmental Studies
