As the radio voice of the Calgary Flames from 1980 until his
retirement in 2014, Peter Maher has witnessed more than his fair
share of Flames action up close and personal--from the 1989 Stanley
Cup championship to the individual brilliance of stars like Lanny
McDonald, Al MacInnis, Theo Fleury, and Jarome Iginla. Through
singular anecdotes only Maher can tell as well as conversations
with current and past players, If These Walls Could Talk: Calgary
Flames provides fans with a one-of-a-kind, insider's look into the
great moments, the lowlights, and everything in between. No Flames
fan will want to miss this book.
Education in World History shows how broad currents in
transnational history have interacted with trends in educational
organization and teaching practices over time. From antiquity and
early classical societies to present day, this book highlights the
ways in which changes in religious and intellectual life and
economic patterns in key world regions have generated developments
in education. Since the postclassical period, cross-cultural
connections have also influenced educational change. In more recent
times, transnational dialogues and mobility have played a vital
role in shaping educational patterns. Ranging through South and
East Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas, the book also considers
how the impact of modern forces, such as industrialization and
nationalism, have transformed education in fundamental ways.
Throughout the volume, Mark S. Johnson and Peter N. Stearns
emphasize the tensions between elite and state educational
interests and more diverse popular demands for access and, often,
for more innovative pedagogy. Suitable for introductory world
history and history of education courses, this lively overview
reconsiders the history of education from the perspective of world
and comparative history.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway is one of the great narrow gauge
railways of North Wales, with thousands of visitors travelling to
the summit of Mount Snowdon along the line each year. This book
covers the history of this historic and interesting line from its
beginnings in the 1890s through to the present day. The author
Peter Johnson has been writing about narrow gauge railways for many
years and has a deep knowledge of the lines in North and Mid Wales.
The Snowdon Mountain Railway is an important part of the tourist
industry in North Wales and plays a vital part in providing
transport in this popular and much visited area. This volume looks
at the narrow gauge railway's history and development, taking in
the present and future development of this fascinating line's
operation.
'I mentioned our design to Voltaire,' wrote Boswell. 'He looked at me as if I had talked of going to the North Pole . . .' As it turned out, Johnson enjoyed their Scottish journey (although the land was not quite so wild and barbaric as perhaps he had hoped), and Boswell delighted in it. The year was 1773, they were sixty-three and thirty-two years old, and had been friends for ten years. Their journals, published together here, perfectly complement each other. Johnson's majestic prose and hawk eye for curious detail take in everything from the stone arrowheads found in the Hebrides, to the 'medicinal' waters of Loch Ness and 'the mischiefs of emigration'. Meanwhile, it is very lucky that as Johnson was observing Scotland, Boswell was observing Johnson. His record is perceptive, highly entertaining and full of sardonic wit; for him, as for us, it is an appetizer for The Life of Johnson.
