Waters of Brazil - Strategic Analysis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Carlos Eduardo De Mattos Bicudo, Jose Galizia Tundisi, Marcos... Waters of Brazil - Strategic Analysis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Carlos Eduardo De Mattos Bicudo, Jose Galizia Tundisi, Marcos Cortesao Barnsley Scheuenstuhl
R3,367 Discovery Miles 33 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a product of Brazilian Academy of Sciences Study Group about water issue. The water cycle was addressed based on an integrated point of view, aiming at joining technological and ecological solutions and integrating quantitative and qualitative aspects of this important environmental asset. Issues such as the water resources management and irrigated agriculture, water and health, water and economy, conservation and reuse as management tools, water in the Brazilian semi arid, water in Amazon, urbanization and water resources, education for the sustainability of water resources, groundwater, availability, pollution and eutrophication of water and science, technology and innovation are of the utmost importance for this exact moment in Brazil, and particularly to the State of Sao Paulo. Addressing these issues will undoubtedly contribute towards a sustainable management of water resources trough the coordinated work of different fields of science, progressing a systemic view about water, that would then finally allow management professionals the possibility of an integral action in anticipating problems and thus anticipate solutions.

Limnology (Paperback): Jose Galizia Tundisi, Takako Matsumura Tundisi Limnology (Paperback)
Jose Galizia Tundisi, Takako Matsumura Tundisi
R2,601 Discovery Miles 26 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Limnology provides an in-depth and current overview of the field of limnology. The result of a major tour de force by two renowned and experienced experts, this unique and richly illustrated reference presents a wealth of data on limnology history, water as a substrate, lakes' origins and aquatic biota. Besides a general part, it gives special focus to neotropical limnology, prevalently applicable in countries in the Southern Hemisphere. Starting with the essentials, some definitions and a historical account, this volume then details the main interaction mechanisms with physical and chemical factors, diversity and geographical distribution. With regard to the major continental aquatic systems, it treats the dynamics, variability and characterization of lakes, reservoirs, flooded areas, saline lakes, estuaries and coastal lagoons. The impact of human activity on water resources and the need for the rehabilitation of watersheds, watershed ecosystems and estuaries are addressed subsequently. To illustrate theory, the final part includes research examples in limnology, ecology and environmental sciences in different geographical contexts, as well as ideas for new investigations. This reference volume is intended for researchers and professionals working on inland waters, lakes and rivers within the fields of biology, ecology, environment, forestry, geochemistry, geophysics, and water management. It will also benefit students in the aforementioned areas and readers involved with limnology in related disciplines, such as earth sciences, environmental, water and geological engineering.

Handbook of Inland Aquatic Ecosystem Management (Paperback): Jose Galizia Tundisi, Takako Matsumura Tundisi, Sven Jorgensen Handbook of Inland Aquatic Ecosystem Management (Paperback)
Jose Galizia Tundisi, Takako Matsumura Tundisi, Sven Jorgensen
R1,757 Discovery Miles 17 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Combining background knowledge and practical tools, Handbook of Inland Aquatic Ecosystem Management gives you an overview of how to manage inland waters in a holistic manner. It examines the problems that threaten aquatic inland water ecosystems and presents a set of toolboxes for solving them. The book focuses on lakes, reservoirs, ponds, rivers, wetlands, lagoons, and estuaries, including the predominant freshwater ecosystems as well as saline and brackish ecosystems. Understand Ecosystem Properties and Ecological Processes The book consists of two parts. The first part reviews the basic scientific knowledge needed in the environmental and ecological management of aquatic ecosystems, from limnology and ecology of inland water ecosystems to environmental physics and chemistry. It emphasizes the interacting processes that characterize all inland aquatic ecosystems and explains the scientific considerations behind the conservation principles and their applications. Define the Problems and Quantify Their Sources The second part of the book presents toolboxes that you can apply to achieve more holistic environmental and ecological management. After an overview of the environmental problems of inland aquatic ecosystems and their sources, the book examines toolboxes to help you identify the problem, namely mass balances, ecological indicators, and ecological models. It also discusses toolboxes that can be used to find an environmental management solution to the problem: environmental technology, cleaner technology, and ecotechnology. Integrate Science and Practical Toolboxes to Manage Inland Waters More Effectively This book shows you how to integrate biology, ecology, limnology, and chemistry with the toolboxes in an up-to-date, multidisciplinary approach to environmental management. It provides a powerful framework for ident

Diatom communities as indicators of ecological impairment in rivers (Paperback): Taurai Bere, Jose Galizia Tundisi Diatom communities as indicators of ecological impairment in rivers (Paperback)
Taurai Bere, Jose Galizia Tundisi
R2,011 Discovery Miles 20 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to elucidate the confounding effects of substrate selection, eutrophication, organic pollution, ionic strength, land-use patterns, and heavy metal pollution on benthic diatom communities. Characteristics of benthic diatom communities in relation to pollution level and type were analysed through general criteria and specific criteria. Diatom communities closely reflected the pollution gradient. Diatom-based multivariate water quality assessment results based on different substrates are interchangeable. 17 diatom-based water quality indices developed in other regions proved useful in providing an indication of water quality. Hormesis was demonstrated with a Cd EC50 of 0.077 mg.L-1 being recorded. High metal accumulation capacity by periphyton was demonstrated. Pb and Cr III were shown to decrease the toxicity effects of Cd on periphyton communities. The closer the frequency and duration of the pulse is to a continuous exposure, the greater the effects of the contaminant on aquatic life. Light has a role in modulating the effects of metal toxicants on aquatic life. Diatoms are important indicators of ecological impairment.
