"Rediscovering the Beauty of Sabbath Rest"
Our bodies and souls were "created "to rest--regularly--and when
they do, we experience heightened productivity, improved health,
and more meaningful relationships.
In these pages you'll find wonderful stories of the senator's
spiritual journey, as well as special Sabbath experiences with
political colleagues such as Bill Clinton, Al and Tipper Gore, John
McCain, Colin Powell, George W. Bush, Bob Dole, and others. Senator
Joe Lieberman shows how his observance of the Sabbath has not only
enriched his personal and spiritual life but enhanced his career
and enabled him to serve his country to his greatest capacity.
The rich lessons of the Bible can be your leadership guidebook.
Successful leaders don't rely solely on natural charisma and
organizational authority as their tickets to success. Successful
leadership is a learned art form and a developed discipline. You
can master the art of leadership by examining the pitfalls and
achievements of past leaders and penetrating the stories of our
cultural and religious heritage. The Bible is the ultimate resource
for learning by example: its stories of family relationships,
political beginnings and even divine encounters provide valuable
lessons about leading effectively. In this empowering guidebook,
Nathan Laufer walks you through the stories at the very beginning
of the Bible to examine the portraits of leadership success—and
failure—they contain. He reveals the life-affirming values that
the Bible uses to measure its leaders beginning in the Garden of
Eden; analyzes the ups and downs in Abraham’s, and later
Joseph’s, leadership journeys; and scrutinizes the many
challenges faced by Moses—and God—in the books of Exodus and
Numbers. Laufer draws out from Bible stories the lessons we can use
every day—lessons not only of exemplary leadership, but also of
failing to lead, leading with no direction and leading in the wrong
direction or to a destructive destination. Through Laufer’s
interpretive lenses, these ancient stories come alive to inform and
inspire our leadership today and offer us direction for the future.
"Nathan Laufer helps us see the stories of the [Bible] in new ways,
he turns them into universal paradigms that relate to situations we
all face every day, and he distills his insights into practical and
powerful guidelines. There is no algorithm for leadership, no
cookbook recipe, but it is hard to imagine a leader at any level of
an enterprise whose capabilities will not be enhanced by studying
this book." —from the Preface by Dr. Michael Hammer
Joseph Lieberman's Vice Presidential nomination and Presidential
candidacy are neither the first nor last words on signal Jewish
achievements in American politics. Jews have played an important
role in American government since the early 1800s at least, and in
view of the 2004 election, there is no political office outside the
reach of Jewish American citizens. For the first time, Jews in
American Politics: Essays brings together a complete picture of the
past, present, and future of Jewish political participation.
Perfect for students and scholars alike, this monumental work
includes thoughtful and original chapters by leading journalists,
scholars, and practitioners. Topics range from Jewish leadership
and identity; to Jews in Congress, on the Supreme Court, and in
presidential administrations; and on to Jewish influence in the
media, the lobbies, and in other arenas in which American
government operates powerfully, if informally. In addition to the
thematically unified essays, Jews in American Politics: Essays
concludes with an invaluable roster of Jews in key governmental
positions from Ambassadorships and Cabinet posts to federal judges,
state governors, and mayors of major cities. Both analytical and
anecdotal, the essays in Jews in American Politics offer deep
insight into serious questions about the dilemmas that Jews in
public service face, as well as humorous sidelights and
authoritative reference materials never before collected in one
source. The story of the rich tradition of Jewish participation in
American political life provides an indispensable resource for any
serious follower of American politics, especially in election year
2004.
Beginning this year, federal payment recipients will receive
their government benefits through electronic funds transfer (EFT)--
what most of us call direct deposit. Although cost-cutting is the
driving force behind the move to a virtually all-electronic federal
payment system, Michael Stegman believes the initiative has a far
broader potential: to bring poor Americans into the banking
mainstream. In this book Stegman outlines how many families will
enter the mainstream banking system through EFT '99, as the program
is called. He explains in careful detail the thinking behind the
shift to EFT and the implementation of the program this year. He
also argues that, for maximum success, EFT '99 should be combined
with a program of national Individual Development Accounts (IDAs),
dedicated savings accounts for low-income people that can be used
for purchasing a first home, acquiring more education or job
training, or starting a small-business. Essentially, EFT '99 will
bring people into the banking system, and IDAs will give them an
incentive to use the system to its fullest in order to make their
money work for them and their children. There are other steps that
the government can take to boost EFT's ability to help public aid
recipients achieve self-sufficiency. It can: add a direct deposit
option to state benefits payments programs; give banks significant
additional Community Reinvestment Act Credit for establishing
accounts for EFT recipients; and regulate fees for cashing
government benefits and voluntary accounts so that people are not
charged excessively for accessing their money. This book
demonstrates that -- with careful planning and a relatively small
investment -- the government's EFT initiative can have a major
payoff in real assets and improved prospects for those who have
been, for far too long, on the fringes of the country's mainstream
banking system. Brookings Metro Series
An Amazing Adventure" is a groundbreaking memoir, the personal
recollections of Senator Joe Lieberman and his wife, Hadassah, of
their 2000 vice presidential campaign. There has never been such a
frank account of the American way of running for national office.
The Liebermans' voices alternate throughout the book as they
describe the excitement, their sense of the honor of being chosen,
the extraordinary and sometimes exhausting demands, and the
satisfactions and joys of the hard-fought campaign they waged as a
team.
From the second they find out that Joe has been chosen by Al
Gore as his running mate, the Liebermans' lives are drastically
changed -- privacy vanishes as political handlers take over. Joe
and Hadassah recount the excruciating vetting process, the
exhilaration of the Democratic National Convention, the tension of
the debates, and finally, the drama of Election Day and of the
contentious weeks that followed.
Thrilled to be running in a national campaign that they regarded
as immensely important to the national purpose, and profoundly
moved by the audiences that came to see and hear them, the
Liebermans nevertheless admit that it was a complicated and
demanding experience. They describe its ups and downs in personal,
frank, and witty ways.
Woven throughout this inspirational but cautionary tale are the
Liebermans' opinions, including their take on Joe's being the first
Jewish vice presidential candidate and on Hadassah's debut to a
national public as a first-generation American and child of
Holocaust survivors.
An honest, high-spirited, revealing, and ultimately optimistic
book from the candidate and his wife.
"Child support in America is a national disgrace. There is no more
widespread and profoundly consequential example of lawlessness in
our society today than fathers' refusal to care for their children
after divorce."-Joseph I. Lieberman More than half the men in
America who have been told by a judge to pay child support disobey
the order, forcing millions of mothers and children to live in
poverty. In this much-needed book, Joseph I. Lieberman, attorney
general of Connecticut and one of the country's leading experts on
the child-support problem, explains the laws and offers practical
guidance on how women can avoid becoming victims of nonsupport. The
first step is to arrive at an agreement that has a chance of being
followed. The book therefore describes in detail the factors that
should be considered in negotiating a fair settlement-for example,
how to determine the child's needs at present and in the future;
how to determine the father's ability to pay and the mother's to
contribute; and how to protect the child's financial rights in the
event of the death of the father or his remarriage or relocation.
Later chapters provide advice on applying for a needed increase in
the amount of child support-and on countering the father's efforts
to reduce his obligations. Throughout the book, Lieberman focuses
on workable solutions. For the individual mother, this may mean
taking various steps to see that an existing law is enforced by the
courts. From a broader perspective, Lieberman argues for forceful
new state laws that will automatically subtract child support from
a father's income-whether it be wages, bonuses, unemployment
compensation, or retirement benefits. Child Support in America
includes a directory of the state agencies charged with enforcing
the law and of the national organizations that are working to
reform legislation. The book will be an invaluable reference for
lawyers, social workers, and others who advise custodial parents as
well as for men and women embroiled in child support disputes.
"Child Support in America Is the most comprehensive and easily
understood guide for women in big trouble currently available. Many
children could be saved if both fathers and mothers would just read
Lieberman's book before they go to court in divorce matters. He
walks the layman through the law's thorny thicket better and more
cheaply than the expensive divorce lawyers most people usually
hire."-Justice Richard Neely, Supreme Court of Appeals, West
Virginia "A passionate book about the dismal state of child support
enforcement laws."-Jay Katz, Yale Law School
The history of presidential dealings with disasters shows that
whatever their ideology, presidents need to be prepared to deal
with unexpected crises. In recent years, the expectations have
grown as the disasters seem to appear to be coming more frequently.
Since 2001, numerous unpredictable crises, including terror
attacks, massive storms, and an economic collapse, have shaken
Americans to their core. It seems as if technology, for all of its
beneficences, also provides mankind with increasingly powerful ways
to wreak destruction, including nuclear explosions, bioterror
attacks, and cyber-attacks. In addition, instantaneous and
incessant communications technologies send us word of disasters
taking place anywhere in the nation far more rapidly, giving
disasters an immediacy that some may have lacked in the past. In
21st century America, the eyes of the American people look to the
president to lead the response to whatever disasters happen to
strike. President Obama and his team learned this and were taken
aback by the sheer number of crises that a president needed to deal
with, including swine flu, BP's Macondo oil spill, and the Somali
pirates who attacked an American ship. Many of these did not quite
reach disaster status, but Obama's reaction to the constant stream
of crises was both revealing and unnerving: "Who thought we were
going to have to deal with pirates?" In Shall We Wake the
President?, Tevi Troy, a presidential historian and former senior
White House aide and deputy secretary of the Department of Health
& Human Services, looks at the evolving role of the president
in dealing with disasters, and looks at how our presidents have
handled disasters throughout our history. He also looks at the
likelihood of similar disasters befalling modern America, and
details how smart policies today can help us avoid future crises,
or can best react to them should they occur. In addition, he
provides information on what individuals can do to prepare for
disasters. This book includes sections on how American presidents
have dealt with a variety of disasters, including health crises,
terror attacks, economic upheaval, bioterror and cyber-attacks,
natural disasters, and civil breakdown. In doing so, Shall We Wake
the President? will provide lessons from presidents of the past
that will inform policy strategies for presidents of the future.
