A generally acknowledged characteristic of modern life, namely the
temporalization of experience, inextricable from our intensified
experience of contingency and difference, has until now remained
largely outside psychology's purview. Wherever questions about the
development, structure, and function of the concept of time have
been posed - for example by Piaget and other founders of genetic
structuralism - they have been concerned predominantly with
concepts of "physical," chronometrical time, and related concepts
(e.g., "velocity"). All the contributions to the present volume
attempt to close this gap. A larger number are especially
interested in the narration of stories. Overviews of the relevant
literature, as well as empirical case studies, appear alongside
theoretical and methodological reflections. Most contributions
refer to specifically historical phenomena and
meaning-constructions. Some touch on the subjects of biographical
memory and biographical constructions of reality. Of all the
various affinities between the contributions collected here, the
most important is their consistent attention to issues of the
constitution and representation of temporal experience.

The relationship between historical studies and psychoanalysis
remains an open debate that is full of tension, in both a positive
and a negative sense. In particular, the following question has not
been answered satisfactorily: what distinguishes a
psychoanalytically oriented study of historical realities from a
historical psychoanalysis? Skepticism and fear of collaboration
dominate on both sides. Initiating a productive dialogue between
historical studies and psychoanalysis seems to be plagued by
ignorance and, at times, a sense of helplessness. Interdisciplinary
collaborations are rare. Empirical research, formulation of theory,
and the development of methods are essentially carried out within
the conventional disciplinary boundaries. This volume undertakes to
overcome these limitations by combining psychoanalytical and
historical perspectives and thus exploring the underlying
"unconscious" dimensions and by informing academic and nonacademic
forms of historical memory. Moreover, it puts special emphasis on
transgenerational forms of remembrance, on the notion of trauma as
a key concept in this field, and on case studies that point the way
to further research.

Offentliebt. Die Moglicbkeit, bierauf Bezug zu nebmen, legte es
nabe, in der vorliegenden Publikation tbeoretiscbe uDd
metbodologiscbe Argwnentationen, die auf die Fundierung und
Konzeptuaiisierung biograpbiscb-interpretativer Forscbwg abzielen,
eber knapp zu halten. Der Sebwerpunkt der Studien zum Tbema
"Geschichte, Biographie undjriedenspolitisches Handeln" liegt dem-
entsprecbend auf der Darstellung des Prozesses und der Ergebnisse
psyebo- logiscber Erfabrungs-und Erkenntnisbildung. Ieb bedanke
mieb an dieser Stelle nocb einmal bei allen, die zur Ent- stebung
der vorliegenden Arbeit beigettagen baben. In erster Linie dante
ieb den Naturwissenscbaftlerinnen und Naturwissenscbaftlem, die
sieb trotz ibrer erbeblieben beruflieben Belastungen die Zeit
genommen baben, in der verein- barfen tbematiscben Perspektive ibre
