This book explores how feminist organizing was unfolding in similar ways across the county. It examines the enormous energy put into building feminist service organization such as women's shelters and rape crisis centers which were to have an profound impact on major social institutions, health care delivery and the justice system. It also looks at the differences between the organizing strategies of 'second wave' feminists and those of the 21st century. Much 21st century feminist organizing is taking place outside of explicitly feminist groups, with young feminists bringing a gender justice perspective to a range of racial, economic and climate justice organizations.

Elena Ferrante-named one of the 100 most influential people in 2016 by Time magazine-is best known for her Neapolitan novels, which explore such themes as the complexity of female friendship; the joys and constraints of motherhood; the impact of changing mores between men and women; the pervasiveness of male violence; the struggle for upward mobility and the impact of the feminist movement. Ferrante's three novellas encompass similar themes, including moments of extreme tension in women's lives. This study analyzes the integration of political themes and gender constraints in Ferrante's works, including men's entrapment in a sexist script written for them. Her decision to write under a pseudonym is examined, along with speculation that Rome-based translator Anita Raja and her husband are coauthors of Ferrante's books.
Drawing on the experiences of grassroots political activists from different socio- economic and ethnic backgrounds, Green Shoots of Democracy explores how self-identified progressives manage (or fail to manage) to work within a big city political machine. Although the book focuses on the work of progressives to foster democracy and transparency within the Philadelphia Democratic Party, lessons gleaned from their experiences are applicable beyond Philadelphia. Americans have long had a history of volunteerism; however, grassroots partisan politics is often not considered a worthy volunteer endeavor-not as worthy as, for example, working in a homeless shelter or a literacy center. Green Shoots of Democracy argues for a more democratic, transparent party structure-one that is sorely needed to counter the widespread perception that electoral politics is dirty business rather than an honorable civic project.
