Interest in the area of control of systems defined by partial differential Equations has increased strongly in recent years. A major reason has been the requirement of these systems for sensible continuum mechanical modelling and optimization or control techniques which account for typical physical phenomena. Particular examples of problems on which substantial progress has been made are the control and stabilization of mechatronic structures, the control of growth of thin films and crystals, the control of Laser and semi-conductor devices, and shape optimization problems for turbomachine blades, shells, smart materials and microdiffractive optics. This volume contains original articles by world reknowned experts in the fields of optimal control of partial differential equations, shape optimization, numerical methods for partial differential equations and fluid dynamics, all of whom have contributed to the analysis and solution of many of the problems discussed. The collection provides a state-of-the-art overview of the most challenging and exciting recent developments in the field. It is geared towards postgraduate students and researchers dealing with the theoretical and practical aspects of a wide variety of high technology problems in applied mathematics, fluid control, optimal design, and computer modelling.
The book contains lectures presented during the meeting "1st caesarium" held on the topic "Smart Materials" 1999 in Bonn. Recent results in theory and engineering of smart materials were discussed. Special emphasis was put on thin film technology and its role in sensor and actuator applications.This book will be of particular interest to physicists, engineers and mathematicians working in academia as well as in industry on the field of new materials with special interest in finding intelligent solutions of complex technological problems.
This volume contains the contributions of participants of the conference "Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations" held at the Wasserschloss Klaffenbach near Chemnitz (Saxony, Germany) from April 20 to 25, 1998. The conference was organized by the editors of this volume. Along with the dramatic increase in computer power, the application of PDE-based control theory and the corresponding numerical algorithms to industrial problems has become more and more important in recent years. This development is reflected by the fact that researchers focus their interest on challenging problems such as the study of controlled fluid-structure interactions, flexible structures, noise reduction, smart materials, the optimal design of shapes and material properties and specific industrial processes. All of these applications involve the analytical and numerical treatment of nonlinear partial differential equations with nonhomogeneous boundary or transmission conditions along with some cost criteria to be minimized. The mathematical framework contains modelling and analysis of such systems as well as the numerical analysis and implemention of algorithms in order to solve concrete problems. This volume offers a wide spectrum of aspects of the discipline and is of interest to mathematicians as well as to scientists working in the fields of applications.

The 4th caesarium brought together world known experts reporting the state-of-the-art of Functional Micro-and Nanosystems. Its purpose was to identify and open up new research directions in this rapidly evolving new area and to discuss the potential with respect to applications in automotive, biochemical and information technology. Thin film technologies are an attractive approach to incorporate functional properties into micro- or nano-systems. The continuing development towards smaller structures is driven by the use of higher driving frequencies and thus smaller wavelengths, the growing integration of different functions, the higher degree of parallelism, and size requirements for the detection of bio-molecules. Hence this new technology opens up new possibilities in terms of high frequency wireless data transmission over long distances, sensors showing high spatial and time resolution and new devices to process biological, optical and electrical signals.
With this proceedings volume a new series of publications is started which will present the results of interdisciplinary research activities in the fields of materials science, coupling of biological and electronic systems and commu nication ergonomy. It will contain the contributions of the participants of the caesarium, a conference caesar will organize annually. The 1 st caesarium was held in Bonn on November 17-19, 1999 concentrating on Smart Materials. With the caesarium the recently founded research center caesar (center of advanced european studies and research) creates a forum for discussion of new developments in its fields of activities. caesar is an international research center, focusing on applied, interdisciplinary research projects in the areas of science and engineering. It was established as an independent foundation under private law as part of the compensatory actions under the Berlin/Bonn law of April 26, 1994 to support the structural change in the region of Bonn, when the German Government moved from Bonn to Berlin. The main donors of caesar are the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. A Board consisting of state and federal leg islators, members from the research community and industry and a Scientific Advisory Council assist caesar in all decisions concerning administration and research.

t With the F caesarium, that was held in Bonn in November of 1999, the newly founded research center caesar (center of advanced european studies and research) has initiated a series of symposia, which are to bring researchers together for discussions and definition of positions on the various research fields at caesar on an annual basis. The areas of research at caesar incorpo- rate materials science/nanotechnology, coupling of biological and electronic systems and ergonomics in communications. nd In November of 2000, the 2 caesarium, this time with the theme of "Coupling of Biological and Electronic Systems" was held in Bonn. The con- ference transcript at hand delivers an impression of the introduced topics and discussions. The coupling of biochemics and electronics together with bioinformatics is an exciting and current thematic complex, which will surely co-define the development of science and research for a long time. The pre- n d sentations held at the 2 caesarium gave a glimpse into broadly diversified areas such as bioinformatics, biomolecules and biosensor technology. Further miniaturisation up to the nanoscale played as much of a role asthe conception of fast algorithms for the structural reconnoitring of proteins. We would like to thank the participants of the symposium for the inspiring discussions in a not always easy interdisciplinary dialogue. Thanks to the organising com- mittee, the colleagues Michael Famulok, Daniel Hoffmann, Michael Moske and Eckhard Quandt, the symposium became a success.

The purpose of the Conference on Optimal Control of Partial Differential Equations was to bring together leading experts in this field and to exchange ideas and information about recent advances in control theory connected with partial differential equations. The papers collected in these Proceedings are mainly research papers in which new results are presented. Out of a broad spectrum of topics the problem of exact controllability played a central role, and also shape control was given some special attention. Nonlinear problems were mainly treated under the aspect of optimality whereas identification problems and also numerical aspects were considered only treated marginally.

" Our goals, like those of the other books in the series, are to explain connections and common viewpoints between various mathematical areas, to emphasize the motivation for studying certain prob lem areas, and to present the historical development of our subject. Our aim in this book is to discuss some of the central problems which arise in applications of mathematics, to develop constructive methods for the numerical solution of these problems, and to study the associated questions of accuracy. In doing so, we also present some theoretical results needed for our development, especially when they involve material which is beyond the scope of the usual beginning courses in calculus and linear algebra.
