Embedded systems have long become essential in application areas in which human control is impossible or infeasible. The development of modern embedded systems is becoming increasingly difficult and challenging because of their overall system complexity, their tighter and cross-functional integration, the increasing requirements concerning safety and real-time behavior, and the need to reduce development and operation costs. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the Software Platform Embedded Systems (SPES) modeling framework and demonstrates its applicability in embedded system development in various industry domains such as automation, automotive, avionics, energy, and healthcare. In SPES 2020, twenty-one partners from academia and industry have joined forces in order to develop and evaluate in different industrial domains a modeling framework that reflects the current state of the art in embedded systems engineering. The content of this book is structured in four parts. Part I "Starting Point" discusses the status quo of embedded systems development and model-based engineering, and summarizes the key requirements faced when developing embedded systems in different application domains. Part II "The SPES Modeling Framework" describes the SPES modeling framework. Part III "Application and Evaluation of the SPES Modeling Framework" reports on the validation steps taken to ensure that the framework met the requirements discussed in Part I. Finally, Part IV "Impact of the SPES Modeling Framework" summarizes the results achieved and provides an outlook on future work. The book is mainly aimed at professionals and practitioners who deal with the development of embedded systems on a daily basis. Researchers in academia and industry may use it as a compendium for the requirements and state-of-the-art solution concepts for embedded systems development.
This textbook addresses students, professionals, lecturers and researchers interested in software product line engineering. With more than 100 examples and about 150 illustrations, the authors describe in detail the essential foundations, principles and techniques of software product line engineering. The authors are professionals and researchers who significantly influenced the software product line engineering paradigm and successfully applied software product line engineering principles in industry. They have structured this textbook around a comprehensive product line framework. Software product line engineering has proven to be the paradigm for developing a diversity of software products and software-intensive systems in shorter time, at lower cost, and with higher quality. It facilitates platform-based development and mass customisation. The authors elaborate on the two key principles behind software product line engineering: (1) the separation of software development in two distinct processes, domain and application engineering; (2) the explicit definition and management of the variability of the product line across all development artefacts. As a student, you will find a detailed description of the key processes, their activities and underlying techniques for defining and managing software product line artefacts. As a researcher or lecturer, you will find a comprehensive discussion of the state of the art organised around the comprehensive framework. As a professional, you will find guidelines for introducing this paradigm in your company and an overview of industrial experiences with software product line engineering.
This book provides a comprehensive introduction into the SPES XT modeling framework. Moreover, it shows the applicability of the framework for the development of embedded systems in different industry domains and reports on the lessons learned. It also describes how the SPES XT modeling framework can be tailored to meet domain and project-specific needs. The book is structured into four parts: Part I "Starting Situation" discusses the status quo of the development of embedded systems with specific focus on model-based engineering and summarizes key challenges emerging from industrial practice. Part II "Modeling Theory" introduces the SPES XT modeling framework and explains the core underlying principles. Part III "Application of the SPES XT Framework" describes the application of the SPES XT modeling framework and how it addresses major industrial challenges. Part IV "Evaluation and Technology Transfer" assess the impact of the SPES XT modeling framework and includes various exemplary applications from automation, automotive, and avionics. Overall, the SPES XT modeling framework offers a seamless model-based engineering approach. It addresses core challenges faced during the engineering of embedded systems. Among others, it offers aligned and integrated techniques for the early validation of engineering artefacts (including requirements and functional and technical designs), the management of product variants and their variability, modular safety assurance and deployment of embedded software.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of five international workshops held in Thessaloniki, Greece, in conjunction with the 26th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering, CAiSE 2014, in June 2014. The 24 full and eight short papers were carefully selected from 63 submissions. The five workshops were the First International Workshop on Advanced Probability and Statistics in Information Systems (APSIS), the First International Workshop on Advances in Services Design Based on the Notion of Capability, the Second International Workshop on Cognitive Aspects of Information Systems Engineering (COGNISE), the Third Workshop on New Generation Enterprise and Business Innovation Systems (NGEBIS), and the 4th International Workshop on Information Systems Security Engineering (WISSE).
Software product line engineering has proven to be the methodology for developing a diversity of software products and software intensive systems at lower costs, in shorter time, and with higher quality. In this book, Pohl and his co-authors present a framework for software product line engineering which they have developed based on their academic as well as industrial experience gained in projects over the last eight years. They do not only detail the technical aspect of the development, but also an integrated view of the business, organisation and process aspects are given. In addition, they explicitly point out the key differences of software product line engineering compared to traditional single software system development, as the need for two distinct development processes for domain and application engineering respectively, or the need to define and manage variability.
The Internet has reached a crossroads in its evolution from a source of information to a critical infrastructure, underpinning economies and everyday life. The demand for more multimedia content, interconnected devices, greater connectivity, richer user experiences and services available at any time and from anywhere is increasing the pressure on existing networks and platforms. In this ubiquitous Internet, the number and scope of services available globally are predicted to grow exponentially leading to the Internet of Services . However, in order for these services to be used and re-used in the construction and evolution of service-based systems, significant research effort is required into the broader aspects of services and particularly into the multidisciplinary problems that cut across diverse scientific disciplines. The S-Cube Network of Excellence is one of more than 50 projects within the European Union's FP7 - ICT Programme for Research and Development researching various aspects of the Internet of Services. Within this cohort, S-Cube focuses on fundamental principles, techniques and methods for the service-based systems of the future, combining knowledge from experts in the areas of grid computing, service-oriented computing, business process management, software engineering and human-computer interaction. This book presents the foundations, vision, first results and future work in the area of software services as addressed by S-Cube. The book starts with a presentation of the S-Cube research framework, developed to assist in unifying research communities and agendas across Europe, and provides an introduction to the vision of S-Cube, where the anticipated growth in services and service-based systems will have a profound effect on business and society. The remainder of the book follows the building blocks of the research framework and addresses technologies required for realizing future service-based systems and service engineering principles, techniques and methods that use those technologies to ensure robust, manageable and adaptable systems."

Today it is almost impossible to remember what life was like with no computer, no mobile phone, and no Internet for accessing information, performing tra- actions or exchanging emails and data. New technology is bringing wave after wave of new bene?ts to daily life: organisations are doing business with each other via the Internet; people are ?lling in tax declarations online and booking their next vacation through the Internet. In general we are all progressively - ing (and dependent on) software and services running on computers, connecting mobile phones and other devices, and exchanging information on the Internet. People like to shop around and exercise choice. So do businesses and public administrations. Today they can buy a complete software package that best suits their needs, even though they may never use some of the tools it o?ers, or other desirable tools are not available. In the future they may no longer have to compromise on choice. Alternative approaches like "Software as a Service" and "Computing Resources as a Service" are emerging. Software is provided on-line as a service when and where it is needed, and the same for computing resources needed to run software. Such an approach allows individuals and organisations totapintoande?ectivelyharnesstheimmensewealthofinformation, knowledge and analytical resources when they need them, paying only for what they use.
