Refugees and Migrants in Law and Policy - Challenges and Opportunities for Global Civic Education (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018):... Refugees and Migrants in Law and Policy - Challenges and Opportunities for Global Civic Education (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Helmut Kury, Slawomir Redo
R11,467 Discovery Miles 114 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Refugees and migration are not a new story in the history of humankind, but in the last few years, against a backdrop of huge numbers of migrants, especially from war-torn countries, they have again been a topic of intensive and contentious discussion in politics, the media and scientific publications. Two United Nations framework declarations on the sustainable development goals and on refugees and migrants adopted in 2016 have prompted the editors - who have a background in international criminology - to invite 60 contributors from different countries to contribute their expertise on civic education aspects of the refugee and migrant crisis in the Global North and South. Comprising 35 articles, this book presents an overview of the interdisciplinary issues involved in irregular migration around the world. It is intended for educationists, educators, diplomats, those working in mass media, decision-makers, criminologists and other specialists faced with questions involving refugees and migrants as well as those interested in improving the prospects of orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration in the context of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. Rather than a timeline for migration policies based on "now", with states focusing on "stopping migration now", "sending back migrants now" or "bringing in technicians or low-skilled migrant workers now", there should be a long-term strategy for multicultural integration and economic assimilation. This book, prefaced by Francois Crepeau, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, and William Lacy Swing, Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, addresses the question of the rights and responsibilities involved in migration from the academic and practical perspectives of experts in the field of social sciences and welfare, and charts the way forward to 2030 and beyond, and also beyond the paradigm of political correctness.

Wireless Networking (Hardcover): Anurag Kumar, D Manjunath, Joy Kuri Wireless Networking (Hardcover)
Anurag Kumar, D Manjunath, Joy Kuri
R1,931 Discovery Miles 19 310 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the past decade, the world has witnessed an explosion in the development and deployment of new wireless network technologies. From cellular mobile telephony to the ubiquitous "WiFi" networks in coffee-shops and airports, to the emerging WiMAX wireless broadband access networks, the menu of wireless access systems has become so comprehensive that wireline access to user devices may soon become a relic of the past. Wireless Networking serves as a one-stop view of cellular, WiFi, and WiMAX networks, as well as the emerging wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Rather than provide descriptive accounts of these technologies and standards, the book emphasizes conceptual perspectives on the modeling, analysis, design and optimization of such networks. Furthermore, the authors present wireless networking within the unifying framework of resource allocation, using simple abstractions of the underlying physical wireless communication. In short, Wireless Networking is an in-depth, exhaustive, and invaluable asset to anyone working in this rapidly evolving field.
*Goes beyond descriptive and qualitative treatments, by presenting the foundations underlying the various wireless networking technologies
*Provides abstractions, models and analyses of established and emerging wireless networks, thereby supplying the reader with a conceptual and quantitative treatment, thus ensuring longevity of the learning from this material
*Aids comprehension by including over 120 figures, four appendices on the mathematics of the various models, several inline exercises, and extensive problem sets at the end of each chapter

Helmut Kury, Slawomir Redo
R5,675 Discovery Miles 56 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book analyzes human rights and crime prevention challenges from the perspective of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda, in particular its goal 16 on promoting peaceful, inclusive and just societies, the creation and development of which depend on the interplay between various secular and non-secular (f)actors. The book reflects on the implementation of these two legal instruments from a "back to the future" standpoint, that is, drawing on the wisdom of contributors to the 2030 Agenda from the past and present in order to offer a constructive inter-disciplinary and intergenerational approach. The book's intended readership includes academics and educationists, criminal justice practitioners and experts, diplomats, spiritual leaders and non-governmental actors; its goal is to encourage them to pursue a socially and human rights oriented drive for "larger freedom," which is currently jeopardized by adverse political currents.

Communication Networking - An Analytical Approach (Hardcover): Anurag Kumar, D Manjunath, Joy Kuri Communication Networking - An Analytical Approach (Hardcover)
Anurag Kumar, D Manjunath, Joy Kuri
R2,409 Discovery Miles 24 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Communication Networking is a comprehensive, effectively organized introduction to the realities of communication network engineering. Written for both the workplace and the classroom, this book lays the foundation and provides the answers required for building an efficient, state-of-the-art network-one that can expand to meet growing demand and evolve to capitalize on coming technological advances. It focuses on the three building blocks out of which a communication network is constructed: multiplexing, switching, and routing. The discussions are based on the viewpoint that communication networking is about efficient resource sharing. The progression is natural: the book begins with individual physical links and proceeds to their combination in a network. The approach is analytical: discussion is driven by mathematical analyses of and solutions to specific engineering problems. Fundamental concepts are explained in detail and design issues are placed in context through real world examples from current technologies. The text offers in-depth coverage of many current topics, including network calculus with deterministically-constrained traffic; congestion control for elastic traffic; packet switch queuing; switching architectures; virtual path routing; and routing for quality of service. It also includes more than 200 hands-on exercises and class-tested problems, dozens of schematic figures, a review of key mathematical concepts, and a glossary. This book will be of interest to networking professionals whose work is primarily architecture definition and implementation, i.e., network engineers and designers at telecom companies, industrial research labs, etc. It will also appeal to final year undergrad and first year graduate students in EE, CE, and CS programs.

Marta Tawil Kuri
R3,561 Discovery Miles 35 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume surveys the interplay between state and non-state actors in Latin American foreign policies and attitudes towards the Middle East in the twenty-first century. How will domestic instability and international tensions affect the choices and behavior of Latin American countries towards the Arab world? The chapters here offer insight into this and similar questions, as well as a comparative value in analyzing countries beyond those specifically discussed. Common topics in policy making are considered-namely, Israel and Palestine, Iran, the Gulf countries, and the Arab "Spring"-as authors from distinct disciplines examine the crucial relation between ends and means on the one hand, and foreign policy actions and context on the other.

Latin American Relations with the Middle East - Foreign Policy in Times of Crisis (Hardcover): Marta Tawil Kuri, Elodie Brun Latin American Relations with the Middle East - Foreign Policy in Times of Crisis (Hardcover)
Marta Tawil Kuri, Elodie Brun
R4,490 Discovery Miles 44 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Latin American Relations with the Middle East surveys the dealings of ten Latin American and Caribbean states - Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Peru, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela - with the Middle East. This volume examins these states' external behavior at both an empirical and conceptual level. Empirically, authors seek to examine Latin American and Caribbean foreign policies towards the Middle East in four dimensions: diplomatic attention; trade and investment (including the energy issue); development cooperation; security matters/intelligence, and relationship with multilateralism (Iran, Palestine, and Syria). Case studies are selectively deployed to observe the influence of unfavorable circumstances that have increased since 2015, such as domestic turmoil, wars, economic crisis, ideological bias, and international constraints. Conceptually, the book enhances the theoretical framework for understanding Southern countries' foreign policies, through fomenting dialogue with Latin American and Caribbean regional literature on foreign policy. Authors inquire about how decision-making processes occur, and uncover how influential actors help to test the main hypotheses of Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA). Forging essential new paths of inquiry, this book is a must read for researchers of International Relations, Foreign Policy, South-South Relations, Latin American Politics, and Middle Eastern Politics.

Clean Politics, Clean Streams - A Legislative Autobiography and Reflections (Hardcover): Franklin L. Kury Clean Politics, Clean Streams - A Legislative Autobiography and Reflections (Hardcover)
Franklin L. Kury
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this legislative autobiography Franklin L. Kury tells the story about his election to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and later the Senate, against the senior Republican in the House and an entrenched patronage organization. The only Democrat elected from his district to serve in the House or Senate since the Roosevelt landslide in 1936, Kury was instrumental in enacting the environmental amendment to the state constitution, a comprehensive clean streams law, the gubernatorial disability law, reform of the Senate's procedure for confirmation of gubernatorial appointments, a new public utility law, and flood plain and storm water management laws. The story told here is based on Kury's recollections of his experience, supplemented by his personal files, extensive research in the legislative archives, and conversations with persons knowledgeable on the issues. This book is well documented with notes and appendices of significant documents. Several chapters provide detailed "inside" descriptions of how campaigns succeeded and the enactment of legislation happened. The passage of the environmental amendment, clean streams law, public utility code, flood plain and storm water management laws, and the gubernatorial disability law are recounted in a manner that reveals what it takes to pass such proposals. The book concludes with the author's reflections on the legislature's historical legacies, its present operation, and its future.

Franklin L. Kury
R764 Discovery Miles 7 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Why Are You Here? A Primer for State Legislators and Citizens is a challenge to America's 7,382 state legislators and their constituents to critically examine their state legislature and take appropriate action to improve it. This is a handbook telling how legislatures came to be, how they function, and discussing how they have fallen in public esteem. The book provides an analytical discussion for evaluating how any legislature deals with four issues: personal greed, criminal and ethical scandal, the influence of money and lobbying, and self-serving legislative seat apportionment. The last section is a "Legislative Toolbox" that provides information helpful in evaluating legislatures and readings of a patriotic nature that enhance idealism and spirit.

Gerrymandering - A Guide to Congressional Redistricting, Dark Money, and the U.S. Supreme Court (Paperback): Franklin L. Kury Gerrymandering - A Guide to Congressional Redistricting, Dark Money, and the U.S. Supreme Court (Paperback)
Franklin L. Kury
R604 Discovery Miles 6 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the spring of 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court will render a decision in the Wisconsin gerrymandering case that could have a revolutionary impact on American politics and how legislative representation is chosen. Gerrymandering! A Guide to Congressional Redistricting, Dark Money and the Supreme Court is a unique explanation to understand and act on the Court's decision, whatever it may be. After describing the importance of legislative representation, the book describes the anatomy of a redistricting n Pennsylvania. That is followed by a review of legislative redistricting in American history and the Supreme Court's role throughout. The book relates what has happened to the efforts to bring changes to redistricting through the legislatures, including the unseen but omnipresent use of dark money to oppose reforms. The penultimate chapter analyzes the Wisconsin case now pending in the Supreme Court and concludes that anyone relying on the Court's decision is relying on a firm maybe. Following the text is a Citizen's Toolbox with which readers throughout the country can evaluate the redistricting situation in their states. The Toolbox is replete with useful information gerrymandering. There are numerous books that tell how bad gerrymandering is, but my book is different, much different. Unlike the others, this book analyzes gerrymandering as developed through the force of history, the hardball politics of state legislatures and scantily disclosed campaign expenditures to maintain it, and the daunting legal challenge for those who want the Supreme Court to adopt a new national standard for determining when gerrymandering is unconstitutional as a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The daunting challenges is to show the Court that a mathematical formula, such as the efficiency gap formula, is a valid method to measure violations of the 14th amendment's guarantee that every citizen be given equal protection of the law.
