The year 1749 was to prove a sombre one for Voltaire. His
relationships with Mme Du Chatelet and Mme Denis were both in
highly emotional and uncertain stages, culminating in Voltaire's
utter devastation at the death of Mme Du Chatelet in September, and
his ensuing need to lay the foundations of a new existence,
initially in Paris and with his oldest friends. It is against this
backdrop that one must envisage his literary activities in 1749.
This year saw the highly successful comedy "Nanine" published,
together with propaganda works arguing in favour of increasing the
commodity and beauty of Paris, the capital from which he spent so
much of his life an exile. At a time of crisis for Voltaire both in
his personal relations and at court, he also wrote a the poem 'La
vie de Paris et de Versailles' which acts as a love poem to Mme
Denis as much as a satire on Parisian society.
This study of Early Christian literature and its influence on
European thought and culture brings much to bear on a subject often
overshadowed by the study of ancient Greek influences. The book,
which begins with an excellent introduction by the author, covers
Christian literature from its earliest manifestations in the first
century to the Middle Ages. The author describes the lives of
numerous writers (including Tertullian, St. Isidore of Seville and
Arnobius) as well as their works and the ideas that shaped them,
allowing readers to appreciate the rise of Latin literature and the
historical circumstances that surrounded it.
First published in 2007. This seminal work on the influence of
Early Christian literature upon European thought and culture, was
written by the unrivalled expert in the field, who devoted twelve
years to its preparation. When it was published in 1924 it was the
first substantial study of the subject, and remains an authority in
the field.
Originally published between 1920-70,The History of Civilization
was a landmark in early twentieth century publishing. It was
published at a formative time within the social sciences, and
during a period of decisive historical discovery. The aim of the
general editor, C.K. Ogden, was to summarize the most up-to-date
findings and theories of historians, anthropologists,
archaeologists and sociologists. This reprinted material is
available as a set or in the following groupings, or as individual
