Lefty and Tim is the dual biography of Hall of Fame pitcher Steve "Lefty" Carlton and catcher Tim McCarver, detailing their relationship from 1965, when they played with the St. Louis Cardinals, through 1980, when they played for the Philadelphia Phillies. Along the way McCarver became Carlton's personal catcher, and together they became the best battery in baseball in the mid-to-late 1970s. At first glance Carlton and McCarver appear like an odd couple: McCarver was old school, Carlton new age. At the beginning of his career, McCarver believed that the catcher called the pitches, encouraged the pitcher when necessary, and schooled the pitcher when he deviated from the game plan. But Lefty, who pioneered the use of meditation and martial arts in baseball, was stubborn too. He wanted to control pitch selection. Over time, Carlton and McCarver developed a strong bond off the diamond that allowed them to understand and trust each other. In the process, Steve Carlton became one of the greatest left-handers in the history of Major League Baseball, an achievement that would not have been possible without Tim McCarver as his catcher. Not only did McCarver mentor Carlton as a young hurler with the Cardinals, but he helped resurrect Carlton's career when they were reunited in Philadelphia midseason in 1975. Carlton won his second Cy Young Award with McCarver behind the plate in 1977. Told in the historical context of the time they played the game, Lefty and Tim recounts the pair's time in the tumultuous sixties, with the racial integration of the St. Louis Cardinals and the dominance of pitching, and in the turbulent seventies, characterized by MLB's labor tensions, the arrival of free agency, and the return of the lively ball that followed the lowering of the pitcher's mound in 1969.
This classic, first published in 1968, is an easy to understand book explaining the purpose and meaning that God had in mind when He appointed the gift of tongues for the church. Written for lay Christians, it discusses speaking in tongues as a sign, as a gift, and as a ministry, as well as answering the question many Christians ask: "Is speaking in tongues for me?" The Christian Research Institute called it "an excellent study on this gift: whether you agree or disagree, this book will answer many questions people are asking today." The book includes a new introduction from the author, a recognized leader in the renewal movement.

Becoming the Person God Wants You to Be
You can be an intercessor to whom the Lord "holds out the golden scepter." The story of Esther offers one of the most gripping dramas in the Bible. An evil plot threatens not only the beautiful young queen but all her people. The future of the nation is stayed on one hope--that Esther can intercede with the king. From the story of Esther, Larry Christenson presents a bold view of intercession. The intercessor stands between two realms, the natural and the spiritual. Intercessory prayer brings the power of heaven down to earth. Step by step, Esther's intercession results in deliverance from the power of evil. The power of evil intrudes in our lives, too. It comes under many guises--schemes, betrayal, sickness, addiction. What can we do? The Mantle of Esther presents a challenge to enter that place of intercession where the enemy in our midst must yield to the authority and power of the King of kings. "Larry Christenson is one of the best teachers I know. In The Mantle of Esther he demonstrates his unique genius for making theological principles alive, personal and workable."--Elizabeth Sherrill, author, All the Way to Heaven: Whatever You're Facing, Heaven Begins Now "I have read and enjoyed the book of Esther many times over the years--both as a story and as history. Larry Christenson's presentation has given me a third reason to treasure it. I will read Esther through new eyes in the future. Prayerful eyes."--Janette Oke, bestselling and award-winning novelist "Larry Christenson has unveiled from Esther's example key principles to aid us in our call to intercession. The Mantle of Esther is must reading for those with a burden to intercede for others and a desire for a more intimaterelationship with the King of kings."--Dr. Morris Vaagenes, retired pastor, North Heights Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minnesota
