Popular uprisings and revolts across the Arab Middle East have
often resulted in a democratic faragh or void in power. How society
seeks to fill that void, regardless of whether the regime falls or
survives, is the common trajectory followed by the seven empirical
case studies published here for the first time. This edited volume
seeks to unpack the state of the democratic void in three
interrelated fields: democracy, legitimacy and social relations. In
doing so, the conventional treatment of democratization as a
linear, formal, systemic and systematic process is challenged and
the power politics of democratic transition reassessed. Through a
close examination of case studies focusing on Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq,
Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, this collection introduces the reader to
indigenous narratives on how power is wrested and negotiated from
the bottom up. It will be of interest to those seeking a fresh
perspective on democratization models as well as those seeking to
understand the reshaping of the Arab Middle East in the lead-up to
the Arab Spring.

An English PEN Award-winning collection of personal testimony from
participants in the Arab Spring
As revolution swept through the Arab world in spring of 2011, much
of the writing that reached the West came via analysts and
academics, experts and expats. We heard about Facebook posts and
tweeted calls to action, but what was missing was testimony from
on-the-ground participants--which is precisely what Layla
Al-Zubaidi and Matthew Cassel have brought together in "Diaries of
an Unfinished Revolution." These essays and profoundly moving,
often harrowing, firsthand accounts span the region from Tunisia to
Syria and include contributors ranging from student activists to
seasoned journalists--half of whom are women. This unique
collection explores just how deeply politics can be held within the
personal and highlights the power of writing in a time of
revolution.
From Cairo to Damascus and from Tunisia to Bahrain, Layla
Al-Zubaidi and Matthew Cassel have brought together some of the
most exciting new writing born out of revolution in the Arab world.
This is a remarkable collection of testimony, entirely composed by
participants in, and witnesses to, the profound changes shaking
their region. Situated between past, present and future - in a
space where the personal and the political collide - these voices
are part of an ongoing process, one that is at once hopeful and
heartbreaking. Unique amongst material emanating from and about the
convulsions in the Arab Middle East, these creative and original
writers speak of history, determination and struggle, as well as of
political and poetic engagement with questions of identity and
activism. This book gives a moving and inspiring insight into the
Arab revolutions and uprisings: why they are happening and what
might come next.
