Elgaronline. Centralizing the role of land and landowners, Spatial
Flood Risk Management brings together knowledge from socio-economy,
public policy, hydrology, geomorphology, and engineering to
establish an interdisciplinary knowledge base on spatial approaches
to managing flood risks. Discussing key barriers and sharing
evidence-based best practices to flood risk management,
international contributors involved in the LAND4FLOOD EU COST
Action initiative (CA16209) seek transferrable solutions to the
implementation challenges of nature-based solutions. Introducing
the concept of spatial flood risk management, the multi-national
teams of authors consider the notion of land through three
analytical lenses: as a biophysical system, a socio-economic
resource, and a solution to flood-risk management. Advocating for a
more comprehensive approach, the book explores options of where and
how to store water within catchments, including decentralized water
retention in the hinterland, flood storage along rivers, and
planned flooding in resilient cities. Bringing together the
existing knowledge on the relation between flood risk management
and land with an international and interdisciplinary scope, this
book will prove invaluable to academics, policy makers and public
authorities involved in flood risk management, urban planners, and
governing environmental bodies.
New essays examining Bohemia as a key European context for
understanding Chaucer's poetry. Chaucer never went to Bohemia but
Bohemia came to him when, in 1382, King Richard II of England
married Anne, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV.
Charles's splendid court in Prague was renowned across Europe for
its patronage of literature, art and architecture, and Anne and her
entourage brought with them some of its glamour and allure - their
fashions, extravagance and behaviour provoking comment from English
chroniclers. For Chaucer, a poet and diplomat affiliated to
Richard's court, Anne was more muse than patron, her influence
embedded in a range of his works, including the Parliament of
Fowls, Troilus and Criseyde, the Legend of Good Women and
Canterbury Tales. This volume shows Bohemia to be a key European
context, alongside France and Italy, for understanding Chaucer's
poetry, providing a wide perspective on the nature of cultural
exchange between England and Bohemia in the later fourteenth
century. The contributors consider such matters as court culture
and politics, the writings of Richard Rolle, artistic style, Troy
stories, historiographic writing and travel narrative; they
highlight the debt Chaucer owed to Bohemian culture, and the
affinities between English and Bohemian literary production,
whether in the use of Petrarch's tale of Griselde, the iconography
of the tapster figure, or satires on the Passion of Christ.
This book explores the shift towards individual responsibility that
is increasingly evident in welfare systems across the world. The
book will be of interest to students and scholars across sociology,
social policy, and political science, with a particular focus on
migration, minorities, political discourse, securitisation, social
justice and human rights. "This book offers a compelling read,
analysing how workfare is legitimated in the Central European
context, through the innovative metaphor of "political farming."
The analytical framework brings together several distinct streams
of theorizing (critical discourse studies, critical security
studies, governmentality, boundary-making, and the dynamics of
ethnic relations) seamlessly and effectively. Through a very
nuanced discursive analysis, Kissova shows how the poor, the
offenders, and the "unadaptable" - categories policymakers use to
talk about material need recipients - are linked pathologically
with criminality, abuse of the system and other negative
perceptions. This is a must-read text for anyone interested in how
political actors justify questionable legislation that cements
inequality in today's neoliberal milieu." - B. Nadya Jaworsky,
Associate Professor, Sociology, Masaryk University, Czech Republic
"Lenka Kissova's book is clearly written and carefully researched.
Her interdisciplinary insight and discursive analysis of
parliamentary debates on Slovak "workfare" policies illustrates the
deliberate, precise and politicized colocation of Roma
marginalization and economic disadvantage, in a manner that starkly
illustrates systemic racism dressed up as morally necessary
regulatory reform. Moreover, her research has broader comparative
and methodological relevance given how she layers in and utilizes
governmentality, securitization and legitimation theory, unmasking
how neoliberal economic assumptions and dog whistle politics, woven
into the speech of politicians, works to demonize recipients as
real or potential cheats and criminals, enact further social
exclusion and heighten inequality and fear while not-so-subtly
promoting existing prejudices. Her overarching metaphor-that of
parliamentarians engaging in "political farming" where their ideas
seed and take root in fertile soil of the national landscape
resulting in regulatory "products"-effectively demonstrates how
social reality generally and state regulation specifically can be
constructed divorced from actual evidence, a process beyond her
specific case and critically relevant to our times." - Barbara J.

European, Russian and Eurasian Studies, University of Toronto,

This book presents state-of-the-art, essential methods and tools
for flood risk assessment and management. The costs of damage
caused by extreme weather events, among which floods are a major
category, are rapidly rising, both globally and across Europe. The
scope and scale of flood episodes point to the need for
comprehensive proposals, including the implementation of flood
protection measures in areas exposed to flood risk. This book is
dedicated to flood damage assessment, and addresses the management
of social, economic and environmental damage. It develops a general
methodology for flood risk assessment and presents a range of
effective flood protection methods in keeping with the objectives
of flood risk management. As such, it offers a valuable resource
for young researchers, academics, lecturers and water management
practitioners alike.
Constructed wetlands with horizontal sub-surface flow (HF CWs)
have been used for wastewater treatment for more than four decades.
HF CWs are used around the world for many types of wastewater,
including municipal sewage, agricultural and industrial
wastewaters, runoff waters, wastewaters containing
endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and landfill leachate.
This book fills a gap in the literature by providing an
extensive, worldwide overview of this treatment technology. Special
attention is paid to assessing the use of this treatment technology
in individual countries and treatment performance of various HF CWs
with respect to major pollutants in different types of
wastewater.
The book provides a broad base of knowledge, including:
- processes occurring in wetland soils and overlying water
- various types of constructed wetlands for wastewater
treatment
- detailed information about design parameters, functioning,
operation and maintenance, and costs of HF CWs
- evaluations of treatment efficiency of HF CWs under diverse
conditions
- information on the global use of HF CWs for various types of
wastewater
The inclusion of case studies from over 50 countries and more
than 250 colour photos that illustrate the science makes this an
invaluable text.
This book will be useful not only to wetland scientists,
teachers, and engineers, but also to landscape planners,
ecologists, wastewater-treatment designers and governmental
decision-makers.
This book analyses North Korean foreign policy since 1994, aiming
to better understand the part the DPRK plays in international
politics. Pyongyang is the country's capital and largest city. To
the north and northwest, the country is bordered by China and by
Russia along the Amnok and Tumen rivers; it is bordered to the
south by South Korea, with the heavily fortified Korean
Demilitarized Zone separating the two. Nevertheless, North Korea,
like its southern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate
government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands. Both North
Korea and South Korea became members of the UN in 1991. Applying
the role theoretical approach to North Korea for the first time,
this book charts the continuities and changes in North Korean
foreign policy, drawing on content analysis of North Korean
periodicals. It begins with an identification of roles, before
analysing the relationship between these roles and foreign policy
in practice. In particular, it examines the links between role
shifts and changes in interaction with the U.S. and South Korea.
This book also demonstrates that the existence of pressure,
sanctions and confrontations have contributed to a confrontational,
isolationist and inward-looking foreign policy. Therefore, it
argues, one should be aware that if the DPRK is constantly treated
as if it is a nuclear state - and even a rogue state - it is much
easier for it to enact a role on the international stage which
reflects this. As a study of the foreign policy of the world's most
controversial and secretive country, this book will be invaluable
to students and scholars of Korean politics and international
relations, as well as Asian Studies more generally.
This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of
public money and its political and societal implications. Drawing
on evidence from central and eastern Europe, it offers an
innovative insight into public responses to various strategies of
public spending. Given that public expenditures are funded mainly
from tax revenues, it also assesses public attitudes to politically
motivated allocations of funds. The book seeks to identify how
people evaluate the material benefits of funding in light of the
fairness - or lack thereof - of the distribution process, whether
popular acceptance of variations in public spending depends on the
framing of the beneficiaries, and the implications of money
allocation for political trust in political institutions.
This book presents scientific and technological innovations and
advancements already developed or under development in academia,
industry, and research communities. It includes fundamental ideas
and advancement in terahertz technology covering high intensity
terahertz wave generation, THz detection, different modes of THz
wave generation, THz modulation system, and terahertz propagation
channel modeling. It highlights methodologies for the design of
terahertz components and system technologies including emerging
applications. The chapter contents are based on theoretical,
methodological, well-established, and validated empirical work
dealing with different topics in the terahertz domain. The book
covers a very broad audience ranging from basic sciences to experts
and learners in engineering and technology. It would be a good
reference for advanced ideas and concepts in THz technology which
will best suit microwave, biomedical, and electrical and
communication engineers working towards next-generation technology.

In the last decade, there have been an increasing convergence of
interest and methods between theoretical physics and fields as
diverse as probability, machine learning, optimization and
compressed sensing. In particular, many theoretical and applied
works in statistical physics and computer science have relied on
the use of message passing algorithms and their connection to
statistical physics of spin glasses. The aim of this book,
especially adapted to PhD students, post-docs, and young
researchers, is to present the background necessary for entering
this fast developing field.
The book examines the destruction of the architectural heritage in
Mosul perpetrated by Islamic State between 2014 and 2017. It
identifies which structures were attacked, the ideological
rationale behind the destruction, and the significance of the lost
monuments in the context of Mosul's urban development and the
architectural history of the Middle East. This methodologically
innovative work fills an important gap in the study of both current
radical movements and the medieval Islamic architecture of Northern
Iraq.
This book explores the social, ethical and legal implications of
assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Providing a comparative
analysis of several European countries, the authors evaluate the
varied approaches to the application of ART throughout Europe. From
a global perspective, countries take very different approaches to
the regulation of ART. Countries apply restrictions to the access
criteria for these treatments and/or direct restrictions to the
practice of the techniques themselves. To understand these varied
approaches to ART practice and regulation, it is necessary to
understand the societal and political background from which they
emerged. This book therefore consists of case studies from eight
European countries which provide insights into the status and
development of the regulation of ART in the last 40 years. The
country cases from all over Europe and the three comparative
chapters provide insights into the diversity of current ART
regulation across the continent as well as into similarities,
differences and trends in this regulatory area. This book will be
of interest to practitioners of ART who are interested in
understanding the differences in regulation of ART in Europe, as
well as long-term trends in this respect. Given the ethical and
legal implications the book explores, it will also be of interest
to students or researchers in the fields of social sciences,
humanities and law.
The book is intended as a handbook providing detailed instructions
for the correct conducting of jar tests, which are needed for the
optimisation of the coagulation/flocculation process. It contains
the essential theoretical background of coagulation/flocculation,
including a description of the influence of different parameters on
the coagulation efficiency of various impurities (e.g. pH value and
type/dose of coagulant), and floc properties and their separation
(e.g. mixing intensity, mixing time, but also type/concentration of
coagulant and impurities). The principle of jar tests is explained
and parameters possible to optimize (i.e. coagulation pH, coagulant
dose, flocculation aid dose, mixing intensity and mixing time) are
discussed. Laboratory equipment for jar tests is proposed,
including mixers and instructions for calculating a mixing
intensity (necessarily expressed by the global shear rate/velocity
gradient G). Mixing intensities for various purposes are
recommended. Detailed practical instructions of how to perform jar
tests follow, including a determination of the dose of reagents for
pH adjustment and coagulant dose, dosing sequence, floc separation
after jar tests by sedimentation and/or centrifugation simulating
sand filtration, sampling, measuring necessary parameters (pH,
coagulant residuals, alkalinity, residual impurity concentrations
etc.), data recording, data processing and jar test evaluation
(with specific examples). The handbook also contains a
supplementary part with tables for conversion of the molar to mass
concentration (and vice versa) of coagulants, and instructions for
diluting coagulants and reagents for pH adjustment.
This open access book addresses the various disciplinary aspects of
nature-based solutions in flood risk management on private land. In
recent decades, water management has been moving towards
nature-based solutions. These are assumed to be much more
multi-purpose than traditional "grey infrastructures" and seem to
be regarded as a panacea for many environmental issues. At the same
time, such measures require more - and mostly privately owned -
land and more diverse stakeholder involvement than traditional
(grey) engineering approaches. They also present challenges related
to different disciplines. Nature-based solutions for flood risk
management not only require technical expertise, but also call for
interdisciplinary insights from land-use planning, economics,
property rights, sociology, landscape planning, ecology, hydrology,
agriculture and other disciplines to address the challenges of
implementing them. Ultimately, nature-based flood risk management
is a multi-disciplinary endeavor. Featuring numerous case studies
of nature-based flood risk management accompanied by commentaries,
this book presents brief academic reflections from two different
disciplinary perspectives that critically highlight which specific
aspects are of significance, and as such, underscore the
multi-disciplinary nature of the challenges faced.
The book is an investigation into the ways in which ideas of place
are negotiated, contested and refigured in environmental writing at
the turn of the twenty-first century. It focuses on the notion of
place as a way of interrogating the socio-political and
environmental pressures that have been seen as negatively affecting
our environments since the advent of modernity, as well as the
solutions that have been given as an antidote to those pressures.
Examining a selection of literary representations of place from
across the globe, the book illuminates the multilayered and
polyvocal ways in which literary works render local and global
ecological relations of places. In this way, it problematises more
traditional environmentalism and its somewhat essentialised idea of
place by intersecting the largely Western discourse of
environmental studies with postcolonial and Indigenous studies,
thus considering the ways in which forms of emplacement can occur
within displacement and dispossession, especially within societies
that are dealing with the legacies of colonialism, neocolonial
exploitation or international pressure to conform. As such, the
work foregrounds the singular processes in which different
local/global communities recognise themselves in their diverse
approaches to the environment, and gestures towards an
environmental politics that is based on an epistemology of contact,
connection and difference, and as one, moreover, that recognises
its own epistemological limits. This book will appeal to
researchers working in the fields of environmental humanities,
postcolonial studies, Indigenous studies and comparative
literature.
This book discusses automated computing systems which are mostly
powered by intelligent technologies like artificial intelligence,
machine learning, image recognition, speech processing, cloud
computing, etc., to perform complex automated tasks which are not
possible by traditional computing systems. The chapters are
extended version of research works presented at first Ph.D.
Research Symposium in various advanced technologies used in the
field of computer science. This book provides an opportunity for
the researchers to get ideas regarding the ongoing works that help
them in formulating problems of their interest. The academicians
can also be benefited to know about the current research trends
that smooth the way to guide their students to carry out research
work in the proper direction. The industry people will be also
facilitated to know about the current advances in research work and
materialize the research work into industrial applications.
Financial schemes for flood recovery, if properly designed and
implemented, might increase flood resilience. However, options for
the increase of flood resilience during the recovery phase are to a
large extent overlooked and the diversity of existing schemes shows
that there has been a lack of consensus on how to achieve resilient
flood recovery. Financial Schemes for Resilient Flood Recovery
investigates how the implementation of financial schemes
(government relief subsidies, insurance schemes, buy-outs, etc.)
might increase flood resilience. The chapters included in this
edited volume address the following questions: Shall government
relief subsidies exist when there is flood insurance in place, and,
if so, how might they both be coordinated? Where (or how) to decide
about build back better incentives and where to go for planned
relocation programs? What is the distributional equity of financial
schemes for flood recovery, and has it been sufficiently treated?
The book covers different approaches to flood recovery schemes with
specific intervention rationales in different countries. Empirical
evidence provided clearly shows the great diversity of financial
flood recovery schemes. This diversity of state-funded schemes,
private-based insurance schemes, and hybrids as well as planned
relocation schemes indicates a lack of a consistent and strategic
approach in flood risk management and flood resilience about flood
recovery. The chapters in this book were originally published in
the Environmental Hazards.
Leading in the Age of Innovations centres on the need for a more
complex process-relational oriented approach to leadership. The
complexity of leadership has grown significantly during the 21st
century where the need to adapt to the escalating changes in our
society and workplace forms one of the most important prerequisites
to succeed. Leading in the Age of Innovations represents the
outcomes of the lengthy scientific work that was undertaken for the
past 10 years and it is still an ongoing process. This book
introduces a new concept of leadership based on the process and
relational dimensions which resulted in the development of the
Reflective Leadership concept. The new model of leadership provides
a unique concept on how to bring together various disciplines and
explains the overlapping relations between them. Moreover, the
proposed view on leadership reflects the current evolution around
the globe highlighting the importance of change and innovation. In
organizations, too much focus is on the end product and the
technical details of how a product is made and distributed. Less
attention is focused on how people interact, and how the human
capacity is effectively supported by leaders who, on the other
hand, are expected to support a culture of innovation. This
behavioural interaction is governed by a set of predictable values
and norms. These relationships need to be understood for an
organization to prosper and is thus far more important to the
leadership process. Leading in the Age of Innovations seeks to
establish this understanding and will be key reading to
researchers, scholars and practitioners alike in the field of
leadership, organizational studies and related disciplines.
The monograph presents psychological interpretations of the
specific reactions of individuals within the perception of
attractive human faces. It concentrates on exploring selected
attributes of human face that increase its attractiveness. After
introducing essential information on the specifics of facial
perception and its brain correlates, the monograph presents
findings on the effect of symmetry, averageness, proportions,
sexually dimorphic features, personality characteristics, or the
importance of specific parts of the face to its attractiveness.
Based on the results of both foreign and own research, the authors
formulate interpretations of why and how the identification and
preference of examined characteristics have been developed and
maintained by the evolution.
This book examines to what extent the effect of education on
political and social tolerance varies cross-nationally. It gives an
inventory of micro- and macro- level factors moderating this
effect. The empirical analysis is based on comparative surveys
across 24 and 33 countries at two time points. Results indicate
that the positive effect of education does not always overcome the
negative effects of personality characteristics and low
socio-economic status. Moreover, education contributes to more
tolerant views only in countries with certain political,
socio-economic and cultural background. Overall, the book argues
that there are several micro- and macro-level conditions that
should be fulfilled before one may proclaim education as the
universal problem solver.
