Laws of Form is a seminal work in foundations of logic, mathematics
and philosophy published by G Spencer-Brown in 1969. The book
provides a new point of view on form and the role of distinction,
markedness and the absence of distinction (the unmarked state) in
the construction of any universe. A conference was held August
8-10, 2019 at the Old Library, Liverpool University, 19 Abercromby
Square, L697ZN, UK to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the
publication of Laws of Form and to remember George Spencer-Brown,
its author. The book is a collection of papers introducing and
extending Laws of Form written primarily by people who attended the
conference in 2019.
Imagine you're in a room, looking at a colourful grid of many
different shapes spread out on a wall. There's something intriguing
about it - something almost magical. There are triangles, circles,
squares, stars. Each has something on it - a word or diagram.
There's one shape of each colour ...placed in a strange formation
...what could the underlying pattern be? It's as if each shape is a
door or window to another world; the whole display a chocolate box
for the mind - a magical carriage to take you on a journey through
your imagination. Get ready to embark on your very own Odyssey
journey - a unique journey unlike any you've ever gone on before.
Story and Structure tells the untold story of how story works.
Using just six primary symbols, author Leon Conrad outlines
eighteen story structures and shows how they all optimally solve
the problems which give rise to them. The book also demonstrates
the much wider application of story, presenting new insights into
story as a dynamic force of life, allowing the reader to access
more harmony and flow in their life. Writers, storytellers,
creative writing teachers, folklorists, narrative therapists,
anthropologists, poets, and readers interested in how story works
will all find this book useful and informative. Rethink your idea
of story.
