French Cultural Studies for the Twenty-First Century brings
together current scholarship on a diverse range of topics-from
French postcards and Third Republic menus to Haitian literary
magazines and representation of race in vaudeville theater-in order
to provide methodological insight into the current practice of
French cultural studies. The essays in the volume show how scholars
of French studies can effectively analyze what we term
"non-traditional sources" in their historical and geographical
contexts. In doing so, the volume offers a compelling vision of the
field today and maps out potential paradigms for future research.
This book builds upon previous scholarship that defined the stakes
of using an interdisciplinary approach to analyze cultural objects
from France and Francophone regions and aims to evaluate the
current state of this complex and constantly evolving field and its
current methodological practices.
ReFocus: The Films of Rachid Bouchareb is the first book-length
study of the internationally recognized director's films. Bouchareb
was one of France's first filmmakers of North African descent and
his career as a director and producer now spans over thirty-five
years. Remarkably varied in their themes, formal elements and
narrative settings, Bouchareb's work has engaged with and reflected
on a variety of crucial social, political and historical issues;
from the role of colonial troops in the French army during the
Second World War, to terrorism in contemporary Europe. This volume
examines Bouchareb's films from an interdisciplinary perspective,
exploring key influences on his output and considering new
theoretical approaches to his filmmaking.

Muslim Women in French Cinema: Voices of Maghrebi Migrants in
France is the first comprehensive study of cinematic
representations of first-generation Muslim women from the Maghreb
(Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) in France. Women of this generation
migrated to France during the decades preceding and following the
end of French colonial rule, and they are generally - though not
always accurately - regarded as belonging to a generation of
migrants silenced under the weight of poverty, illiteracy, Islamic
tradition, and majority ethnic Islamophobia. Situated at the
intersection of post-colonial studies, gender studies, and film
studies, this book brings together a diverse corpus of over 60
documentaries, short films, telefilms (made-for-television films),
and feature films released in France between 1979 and 2014, and it
devotes one chapter to each kind of film. In examining the ways in
which the voices, experiences, and points of view of Maghrebi
migrant women in France are represented and communicated through a
selection of key films, this study offers new perspectives on
Maghrebi migrant women in France. It shows that women of this
generation, as they are represented in these films, are far more
diverse and often more empowered than has generally been thought.
The films examined in this book contribute to larger contemporary
debates and discussions relating to immigration, integration, and
identity in France.
