Mechanics of Bio-Sediment Transport (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Hongwei Fang, Lei Huang, Huiming Zhao, Wei Cheng, Yishan Chen,... Mechanics of Bio-Sediment Transport (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Hongwei Fang, Lei Huang, Huiming Zhao, Wei Cheng, Yishan Chen, …
R5,392 Discovery Miles 53 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The main focus of this book is the transport mechanics of sediment particles coated with microbial biofilm, which is called bio-sediment. The book also addresses the question of how to measure and simulate the considerable variation in the properties of natural sediment associated with microbial biofilm, ranging from the micro-scale surface morphology to the macro-scale sediment transport. Nowadays most studies to elucidate the mechanisms of sediment transport have concentrated on physical-chemical sediment properties, little work explicitly coupled sediment dynamics and the environmental effects under the influence of micro-ecosystem, thus leaving a serious gap in water and sediment sciences as well as water ecological research. With respect to physical-chemical sediment properties, this book has been undertaken to evaluate and quantify the effect of biological factors - biofilm on sediment transport mechanics. The chapters cover topics including development of bio-sediment and its properties; model of biofilm growth on sediment substratum; bedform and flow resistance of bio-sediment bed; incipient velocity and settling velocity of bio-sediment; bedload and suspended load transport for bio-sediment; numerical simulation of bio-sediment transport. Besides, the measurement technology, analysis method and expression approach introduced in this book combine the characteristics of hydraulic, environmental and microbial research, having more immediate innovation. This book will be of interest to researchers, managers, practitioners, policy and decision makers, international institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, educators, as well as graduate and undergraduate students in the field of hydraulics and river dynamics. It will help to understand the relevance of sediment transport and biofilm growth under the role of aqueous micro-ecosystem, to introduce better tools for the simulation and prediction of bio-sediment transport, and to provide a scientific basis and application foundation for the research of interaction between sediment particles and ecological and environmental factors.

Regional Inequality in Transitional China (Paperback): Felix Haifeng Liao, Yehua Dennis Wei, Li Huang Regional Inequality in Transitional China (Paperback)
Felix Haifeng Liao, Yehua Dennis Wei, Li Huang
R1,372 Discovery Miles 13 720 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book investigates uneven regional development in China - with particular focus on the cases of Guangdong and Zheijiang provinces - which have been at the forefront of debate since Chinese economic reform. Rapid economic growth since the 'opening-up' of China has been accompanied by significant disparities in the regional distribution of income: this book represents one of the most recent studies to present a picture of this inequality. Built upon a multi-scale and multi-mechanism framework, it provides systematic examination of both the patterns and mechanisms of regional development and inequality in provincial China, emphasizing the effects of economic transition. Approaching from a geographical perspective, its authors consider the interplay between the local, the state, and the global forces in shaping the landscape of regional inequality in China. Extensive empirical findings will prove useful to those researching other developing countries within the frontier of globalization and economic transition. Regional Inequality in Transitional China will appeal to scholars and students of geography, economics and Chinese studies more broadly.

Huan Chen, Lei Huang, Sunil Kumar, C.-C.Jay Kuo
R3,187 Discovery Miles 31 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Due to the great success and enormous impact of IP networks, In ternet access (such as sending and receiving e-mails) and web brows ing have become the ruling paradigm for next generation wireless systems. On the other hand, great technological and commercial success of services and applications is being witnessed in mobile wire less communications with examples of cellular, pes voice telephony and wireless LANs. The service paradigm has thus shifted from the conventional voice service to seamlessly integrated high quality mul timedia transmission over broadband wireless mobile networks. The multimedia content may include data, voice, audio, image, video and so on. With availability of more powerful portable devices, such as PDA, portable computer and cellular phone, coupled with the easier access to the core network (using a mobile device), the number of mobile users and the demand for multimedia-based applications is increasing rapidly. As a result, there is an urgent need for a sys tem that supports heterogeneous multimedia services and provides seamless access to the desired resources via wireless connections. Therefore, the convergence of multimedia communication and wireless mobile networking technologies into the next generation wireless multimedia (WMM) networks with the vision of "anytime, anywhere, anyform" information system is the certain trend in the foreseeable future. However, successful combination of these two technologies presents many challenges such as available spectral bandwidth, energy efficiency, seamless end-to-end communication, robustness, security, etc."

China in the Era of Social Media - An Unprecedented Force for An Unprecedented Social Change (Hardcover): Junhao Hong China in the Era of Social Media - An Unprecedented Force for An Unprecedented Social Change (Hardcover)
Junhao Hong; Contributions by Ching-Man Chan, Naipeng Chao, Yang Cheng, Tiance Dong, …
R3,327 Discovery Miles 33 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

China in the Era of Social Media discusses how social media is changing the world in an unprecedented way through speed, scope, and depth. In the last decade or so, social media in China has witnessed the most explosive growth in the world. Being the most populous nation in the world, it has the most social media users in the world as well. This book examines the current situation and unique characteristics of Chinese social media, the significance of social media in the country's social transformation, and particularly its influences on political change in the nation. The main goal of this book is to explore how social media has been affecting and thus changing China's political system, the ruling communist ideology, and the state-run media, as well as its public discourse and public opinions. Scholars of Asian studies, political science, and communications will find this book particularly interesting.

Teacher Education in Taiwan - State control vs marketization (Hardcover): Shen-k eng Yang, Jia-Li Huang Teacher Education in Taiwan - State control vs marketization (Hardcover)
Shen-k eng Yang, Jia-Li Huang
R4,868 Discovery Miles 48 680 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since the Teacher Education Act was in place in 1994, student teachers were educated through diverse educational institutions instead of the traditional normal schools (Taiwan's equivalent of teachers' colleges). But such market-based teacher education has been altered by politics, society and culture in the direction of government-controlled teacher education, particularly in the quality evaluation of teacher education. Taiwan maintains teacher education quality by controlling the number of teachers, using teacher assessment to eliminate teachers who are not up to standard, evaluating teacher education institutions, evaluating professional development of teachers to raise elementary and secondary teacher quality. This book uses Taiwan as a case study to analyze the transformation of teacher education in a country which goes through political, economic and societal transitions, along the axis of state regulation vs marketization. It analyzes the uniqueness of Taiwanese teacher education for international reference, and draws implications for teacher education policies in the context of education reform. The Formation of Two Approaches to Teacher Education Teacher Education Policy and Policy Direction in Taiwan The Ideology, Implications, Applications of Teacher Profession Standards The Teacher Education Strategic Alliances in Taiwan This book will interest policy makers, researchers and students in the field of education, especially in teacher education and comparative education.
