In the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock the United States, American Hustle tells the story of con man Irving Rosenfeld, who along with his equally cunning and seductive partner Sydney Prosser is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso. DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous as it is enchanting. Caught between the con-artists and Feds is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator, but it's Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn who could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. (2014 Oscar nominations for: Best Motion Picture; Best Director; Best Actor; Best Actress; Best Supporting Actor; Best Supporting Actress; Best Original Screenplay; Best Film Editing; Best Production Design; Best Costume Design)
Award-winning crime drama directed by David O. Russell and starring Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper. Based on the Abscam sting operation of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the story follows FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper) as he blackmails conman Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and his lover Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) into helping him with a case after a successful investigation into the pair's own foreign banking scam. Although DiMaso's sights are initially set on New Jersey Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), the investigation is broadened to include influential members of Congress who are suspected of taking bribes. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Lawrence as Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn, Louis C.K. as DiMaso's superior at the FBI and Robert De Niro as ex-mafia hitman Victor Telleggio who has now turned to the casino business as a means of making money. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Bale), Best Actress (Adams), Best Supporting Actor (Cooper), Best Supporting Actress (Lawrence) and Best Director (Russell), and also won three Golden Globes and three BAFTAs.
Comedy directed by, co-written by and starring Ricky Gervais as Mark, a performer who tells the first lie in a world where people only tell the truth and lying has never before existed. He uses his new found ability to advance his career and charm the girl of his dreams, Jennifer (Jennifer Garner) - who is completely out of his league - to much comic effect.
Woody Allen writes and directs this award-winning comedy drama starring Cate Blanchett, Peter Saarsgard and Sally Hawkins. Single, broke and suffering from a nervous breakdown, housewife Jasmine (Blanchett) travels from New York to San Francisco to stay with her sister Ginger (Hawkins). While Ginger encourages her to become an interior designer, Jasmine's snobbish outlook causes her to question her sister's taste in men. Before she can find success in interior design Jasmine's lack of funds force her to reluctantly take on a job as a receptionist, but when she encounters a diplomat, Dwight (Saarsgard), who falls for her, she begins to find some hope. The ensemble cast also features Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay and Bobby Cannavale. The film was nominated for three Oscars and won the award for Best Actress (Blanchett) - a role for which Blanchett also received the corresponding accolade at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs.
