This book introduces a new, state-of-the-art method for the study
of the asymptotic behavior of solutions to evolution partial
differential equations; much of the text is dedicated to the
application of this method to a wide class of nonlinear diffusion
equations. The underlying theory hinges on a new stability result,
formulated in the abstract setting of infinite-dimensional
dynamical systems, which states that under certain hypotheses, the
omega-limit set of a perturbed dynamical system is stable under
arbitrary asymptotically small perturbations. The Stability Theorem
is examined in detail in the first chapter, followed by a review of
basic results and methods---many original to the authors---for the
solution of nonlinear diffusion equations. Further chapters provide
a self-contained analysis of specific equations, with
carefully-constructed theorems, proofs, and references. In addition
to the derivation of interesting limiting behaviors, the book
features a variety of estimation techniques for solutions of semi-
and quasilinear parabolic equations.Written by established
mathematicians at the forefront of the field, this work is a blend
of delicate analysis and broad application
Newtonian Nonlinear Dynamics for Complex Linear and Optimization
Problems explores how Newton's equation for the motion of one
particle in classical mechanics combined with finite difference
methods allows creation of a mechanical scenario to solve basic
problems in linear algebra and programming. The authors present a
novel, unified numerical and mechanical approach and an important
analysis method of optimization.
This text is concerned with the quantitative aspects of the theory
of nonlinear diffusion equations; equations which can be seen as
nonlinear variations of the classical heat equation. They appear as
mathematical models in different branches of Physics, Chemistry,
Biology, and Engineering, and are also relevant in differential
geometry and relativistic physics. Much of the modern theory of
such equations is based on estimates and functional analysis.
Concentrating on a class of equations with nonlinearities of power
type that lead to degenerate or singular parabolicity ("equations
of porous medium type"), the aim of this text is to obtain sharp a
priori estimates and decay rates for general classes of solutions
in terms of estimates of particular problems. These estimates are
the building blocks in understanding the qualitative theory, and
the decay rates pave the way to the fine study of asymptotics. Many
technically relevant questions are presented and analyzed in
detail. A systematic picture of the most relevant phenomena is
obtained for the equations under study, including time decay,
smoothing, extinction in finite time, and delayed regularity.

How do we know if mental health services work? What are the best
ways to measure the outcomes of care for people with mental health
problems? This book contains five practical scales for assessing
the outcomes of mental healthcare. They are the European versions
of: Camberwell Assessment of Need (for unmet and met needs) Client
Socio-demographic and Service Receipt Inventory (for service costs)
Involvement Evaluation Questionnaire (for impact of care on family
members) Lancashire Quality of Life Profile (for quality of life)
Verona Service Satisfaction Scale (for service satisfaction). Each
scale has been standardised (in Danish, Dutch, English, Italian and
Spanish), and has been shown to be reliable and valid in all these
European languages. The book contains full details of the
development of these scales, manuals for their use, the scales
themselves and instructions on how to use the results. These new
measures will be invaluable to all those in research, evaluation,
audit and management who have an interest in evidence-based policy
and practice in mental healthcare.
Presenting a selection of topics in the area of nonlocal and
nonlinear diffusions, this book places a particular emphasis on new
emerging subjects such as nonlocal operators in stationary and
evolutionary problems and their applications, swarming models and
applications to biology and mathematical physics, and nonlocal
variational problems. The authors are some of the most well-known
mathematicians in this innovative field, which is presently
undergoing rapid development. The intended audience includes
experts in elliptic and parabolic equations who are interested in
extending their expertise to the nonlinear setting, as well as
Ph.D. or postdoctoral students who want to enter into the most
promising research topics in the field.
The Heat Equation is one of the three classical linear partial
differential equations of second order that form the basis of any
elementary introduction to the area of PDEs, and only recently has
it come to be fairly well understood. In this monograph, aimed at
research students and academics in mathematics and engineering, as
well as engineering specialists, Professor Vazquez provides a
systematic and comprehensive presentation of the mathematical
theory of the nonlinear heat equation usually called the Porous
Medium Equation (PME). This equation appears in a number of
physical applications, such as to describe processes involving
fluid flow, heat transfer or diffusion. Other applications have
been proposed in mathematical biology, lubrication, boundary layer
theory, and other fields. Each chapter contains a detailed
introduction and is supplied with a section of notes, providing
comments, historical notes or recommended reading, and exercises
for the reader.

What's new in the European research and development area? Cloud
computing is a provision model where whatever computing resource
that can be thought of (machines, network, software solutions,
applications) is provided as a service. This new paradigm has
changed the center of gravity of computing in both the academic and
industry environments, but despite the considerable efforts and
investments, there are critical problems that are not yet solved.
The research and development community involved in distributed
computing is searching for viable solutions that will increase the
adoption of the cloud. This is the case of the collaborative work
done by multi-national teams in the context of the FP7 programme of
the European Commission. Students, researchers and developers
working in the field of distributed computing will find in this
book a snapshot of the on-going activities in research and
development of cloud computing undertaken at the European level.
These activities are organized by the latest hot topics of cloud
computing research, which include services, management, automation
and adoption. Summarizing, this book will help the reader
understand and identify the research and development winds that are
pushing the clouds to Europe.
