With the surprising discovery of superconductivity at temperatures
above 100 K, this field was not only brought into the public eye,
but also stimulated research in universities, scientific
institutions and industry, thus continuing the fascinating
development which began with the discovery of the Josephson effect
in the sixties. Cryoelectronics has become a special branch of
cryophysics and cryotechnics and today plays a prominent role
whenever high resolution and precision measurements are required.
Motivated by this development, seven years ago scientists working
in cryoelectronics in the Federal Republic of Germany felt the
necessity for regular meetings allowing a free exchange of ideas
and results achieved. Seminars under the title of
"Kryoelektronische Bauelemente" were held for the first time at the
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig in 1982 on
the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walther
MeiBner, a pioneer in superconductivity. Since then, meetings have
been held every year at different venues in Germany. It is now felt
that the status of this field necessitates a review of the results
of the past, a description of the current state of the art, and a
discussion of future perspectives. This book, entitled
SUPERCONDUCTING QUANTUM ELECTRONICS is a collection of invited
lectures and contributions which will inform the reader on the most
interesting problems involving fundamentals, sensitive detectors
and precision metrology being studied by different groups.
perioperativen Betreuung alter Patienten.
This research effort analyzes the effect of aerodynamic surfaces
versus thrust maneuvers on a reentry vehicle. At high altitudes the
effect of aerodynamic surfaces on the reentry vehicle is small due
to low atmospheric density; however as the vehicle reaches lower
altitudes a lift maneuver is very successful in deflecting the
vehicle and creating a large impact footprint. When a continuous
thrust maneuver is input in the place of a lift maneuver the
results are very similar at the highest maneuver altitudes,
although the impact footprint shrinks rapidly as the maneuver
altitude decreases. Additionally, when the thrust maneuver is along
or opposite the velocity vector of the vehicle it significantly
alters the time of flight, especially when performed at higher
altitudes. In order to perform this analysis, a FORTRAN program
using the equations of motion for a reentry vehicle was modified in
order to accommodate the lift and thrust maneuvers.
America has a love-hate relationship with individualism. In
Reconstructing Individualism, James Albrecht argues that our
conceptions of individualism have remained trapped within the
assumptions of classic liberalism. He traces an alternative
genealogy of individualist ethics in four major
Americanthinkers-Ralph Waldo Emerson, William James, John Dewey,
and Ralph Ellison.
These writers' shared commitments to pluralism (metaphysical and
cultural), experimentalism, and a melioristic stance toward value
and reform led them to describe the self as inherently relational.
Accordingly, they articulate models of selfhood that are socially
engaged and ethically responsible, and they argue that a
reconceived-or, in Dewey's term, reconstructed-individualism is not
merely compatible with but necessary to democratic community.
Conceiving selfhood and community as interrelated processes, they
call for an ongoing reform of social conditions so as to educate
and liberate individuality, and, conversely, they affirm the
essential role individuality plays in vitalizing communal efforts
at reform.
Michael von Albrecht's "A History of Roman Literature," originally
published in German, can rightly be seen as the long awaited
counterpart to Albin Lesky's "Geschichte der Griechischen
Literatur," In what will probably be the last survey made by a
single scholar the whole of Latin literature from Livius Andronicus
up to Boethius comes to the fore. 'Literature' is taken here in its
broad, antique sense, and therefore also includes e.g. rhetoric,
philosophy and history. Special attention has been given to the
influence of Latin literature on subsequent centuries down to our
own days. Extensive indices give access to this monument of
learning. The introductions in Von Albrecht's texts, together with
the large bibliographies make further study both more fruitful and
easy.
