Local Environmental Change and Society in Africa (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): M.A.Mohamed Salih Local Environmental Change and Society in Africa (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
M.A.Mohamed Salih
R3,128 Discovery Miles 31 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The current obsession of social and natural scientists with globalisation has not been matched by equal interest in the study of the consequences of local environmental change on society. As a result, our attention has been drawn away from community and locality to global processes often indifferent to the reality of those at the receiving end of the social, economic, and political problems globalisation creates. Larger (global) synthesis obscures local reality, and imposes conditions often insensitive to local needs, resource management institutions, and production systems, even distorting them. The case studies presented in this book illustrate how environmental degradation has contributed to the distortion of local institutions and economies, thus denying local communities the right to eke out their living in a productive and healthy environment. The contributors highlight the seriousness of the difficulties involved in conflating national policies and local reality, and imposing global policy instruments on local communities. Understandably, the case studies demonstrate that local communities resist putting their faith in environmental policies and plans imposed on them by global or national institutions that often deprive them of access to and control over their local environment.

Economic Development and Political Action in the Arab World (Paperback): M.A.Mohamed Salih Economic Development and Political Action in the Arab World (Paperback)
M.A.Mohamed Salih
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Analysis of North African revolt against authoritarianism, known as the 'Arab Spring', embraced reductionist explanations such as the social media, youth unemployment and citizens' agitations to regain dignity in societies humiliated by oppressive regimes. This book illustrates that reductionist approaches can only elucidate some symptoms of a social problem while leaving unexplained the economic and political structures which contributed to it. One outcome of quiescence, resource-based ethnic and sectarian conflicts and faulty development paradigm is deepened inequality and a wedge between winners and losers or affluence, wealth and power vis-a-vis poverty and hunger among humiliated jobless and hope-less masses. The book blends theories of development and transition to explain the complex factors which contributed to North Africans' revolt against authoritarianism and its long-term consequences for political development in the Arab World. This timely book is of great interest to researchers and students in Development Studies, Economics and Middle Eastern Studies as well as policy makers and democracy, human rights and social justice activists in the Arab world.

Environmental Planning, Policies and Politics in Eastern and Southern Africa (Hardcover): M.A.Mohamed Salih, Shibru Tedla Environmental Planning, Policies and Politics in Eastern and Southern Africa (Hardcover)
M.A.Mohamed Salih, Shibru Tedla
R2,868 Discovery Miles 28 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Caught between underdevelopment, poverty and environmental degradation, and the need for exploiting their natural resources for development, Africa has, during the last two decades, been engaged in a serious effort to integrate environment and development. The nine case studies (Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Sudan, Uganda and Zambia) presented in this book explore the complexity involved in environmental planning and policy in one of the World's poorest regions. The authors articulate an informed debate, with new conclusions and alternative policy recommendations.

African Political Parties - Evolution, Institutionalisation and Governance (Paperback, New): M.A.Mohamed Salih African Political Parties - Evolution, Institutionalisation and Governance (Paperback, New)
M.A.Mohamed Salih
R826 Discovery Miles 8 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The authors of this collection interrogate the political health of African political parties and evaluate the theory and practice of party functions, ideology and structure. African Democracies and African Politics (Paperback): M.A.Mohamed Salih African Democracies and African Politics (Paperback)
M.A.Mohamed Salih
R812 Discovery Miles 8 120 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Challenging orthodox views on contemporary African politics and democracy, M.A. Mohamed Salih offers a fresh approach to the topic, emphasising the role of ethnicity and religion, in particular that of minorities. His central theme is that government donors from Western nations have imposed Western style democracy in Africa, ignoring the indigenous politics of the region, often resulting in chaos. As a consequence many African societies are divided by ethnicity. Revealing how minorities are inevitably marginalised in all aspects of development and education, Salih shows how, in many instances, they are treated as enemies of the state, as are the opposition parties. He examines democracy and authoritarian development in a pan-African context and the democratic potential of political education, and provides a range of country-specific case-studies, including multi-party democracy in Sudan; democratising anarchy in Sierra Leone; religious violence in Obasanjo's Nigeria and ethnic federalism in Ethiopia.

Jenny M Jones, Amanda R Lea-Langton, Lin Ma, Mohamed Pourkashanian, Alan Williams
R2,083 Discovery Miles 20 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book considers the pollutants formed by the combustion of solid biomass fuels. The availability and potential use of solid biofuels is first discussed because this is the key to the development of biomass as a source of energy. This is followed by details of the methods used for characterisation of biomass and their classification. The various steps in the combustion mechanisms are given together with a compilation of the kinetic data. The chemical mechanisms for the formation of the pollutants: NOx, smoke and unburned hydrocarbons, SOx, Cl compounds, and particulate metal aerosols are given in detail. Combustion kinetics required for the application for design purposes are given. Examples are given of emission levels of a range different types of combustion equipment. Data is given of NOx, particulates and other pollutant arising from combustion of different fuels in fixed bed combustion, fluidized bed combustion and pulverised biomass combustion and co-firing. Modeling methods including computational fluid dynamics for the various pollutants are outlined. The consequential issues arising from the wide scale use of biomass and future trends are then discussed. In particular the role of carbon capture and storage in large biomass combustion plants is considered as well as the opportunity of reducing the concentration of atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide.
