This volume provides an informed review of the accomplishments of the Washington Group on Disability Statistics (WG) in the provision of international data and statistics on disability. It does so within the context of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The volume includes a description of the development and testing of a short set of questions for Censuses, now used in approximately 29 countries and recommended in the U.N.'s Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses: The 2020 Round, which includes disability as a core topic to be collected in censuses. It discusses the experiences of several countries on the use of the WG questions and how this has impacted on national agendas in the area of disability. It follows the development and testing of an extended set of questions for use in national surveys other than censuses and examines the challenges of translation and the importance of generating comparable question sets in different languages and within different cultures. It studies the examination of cognitive testing techniques in a variety of countries, and presents the results of the first round of censuses in 2010 in countries using the six question set. The volume includes discussions of the new development of question modules on a broad range of child disability and functioning, and the environmental contexts of participation that are part of the current work of the WG. In addition, it contains a reflection on the use of the WG's functionality approach to identifying disabilities by humanitarian agencies to identify disabilities in populations of displaced persons. A thoughtful conclusion addresses what the development of cross-nationally comparable data can mean for the improvement of circumstances for all persons with disabilities.
Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory has deeply affected how we
think of ourselves, in emphasizing the limits of consciousness and
the impact of irrational forces on our behavior. Philosophers have
begun to appreciate the significance of Freud's work, but they have
not yet established Freud's place in the history of philosophy.
Addressing the current deficiency in the literature on statistical methods as they apply to the social and behavioral sciences, Numerical Issues in Statistical Computing for the Social Scientist provides readers with a unique, practical guidebook to the numerical methods underlying computerized statistical calculations specific to these fields. The authors demonstrate that knowledge of these numerical methods, and how they are used in statistical packages, is essential for making accurate inferences. With the aid of key contributors from both the social and behavioral sciences, the authors have assembled a rich set of interrelated chapters designed to guide empirical social scientists through the potential minefield of modern statistical computing. Uniquely accessible and abounding in modern-day tools, tricks, and advice, the text successfully bridges the gap between the current level of social science methodology and the more sophisticated technical coverage usually associated with the statistical field.
The MATLAB (R) programming environment is often perceived as a platform suitable for prototyping and modeling but not for "serious" applications. One of the main complaints is that MATLAB is just too slow. Accelerating MATLAB Performance aims to correct this perception by describing multiple ways to greatly improve MATLAB program speed. Packed with thousands of helpful tips, it leaves no stone unturned, discussing every aspect of MATLAB. Ideal for novices and professionals alike, the book describes MATLAB performance in a scale and depth never before published. It takes a comprehensive approach to MATLAB performance, illustrating numerous ways to attain the desired speedup. The book covers MATLAB, CPU, and memory profiling and discusses various tradeoffs in performance tuning. It describes both the application of standard industry techniques in MATLAB, as well as methods that are specific to MATLAB such as using different data types or built-in functions. The book covers MATLAB vectorization, parallelization (implicit and explicit), optimization, memory management, chunking, and caching. It explains MATLAB's memory model and details how it can be leveraged. It describes the use of GPU, MEX, FPGA, and other forms of compiled code, as well as techniques for speeding up deployed applications. It details specific tips for MATLAB GUI, graphics, and I/O. It also reviews a wide variety of utilities, libraries, and toolboxes that can help to improve performance. Sufficient information is provided to allow readers to immediately apply the suggestions to their own MATLAB programs. Extensive references are also included to allow those who wish to expand the treatment of a particular topic to do so easily. Supported by an active website, and numerous code examples, the book will help readers rapidly attain significant reductions in development costs and program run times.
For a variety of reasons, the MATLAB(r)-Java interface was never fully documented. This is really quite unfortunate: Java is one of the most widely used programming languages, having many times the number of programmers and programming resources as MATLAB. Also unfortunate is the popular claim that while MATLAB is a fine programming platform for prototyping, it is not suitable for real-world, modern-looking applications. Undocumented Secrets of MATLAB(r)-Java Programming aims to correct this misconception. This book shows how using Java can significantly improve MATLAB program appearance and functionality, and that this can be done easily and even without any prior Java knowledge. Readers are led step-by-step from simple to complex customizations. Code snippets, screenshots, and numerous online references are provided to enable the utilization of this book as both a sequential tutorial and as a random-access reference suited for immediate use. Java-savvy readers will find it easy to tailor code samples for their particular needs; for Java newcomers, an introduction to Java and numerous online references are provided. This book demonstrates how

The Fractured Self in Freud and German Philosophy examines Freud's transformation of German philosophical approaches to freedom, history, and self-knowledge; defends a theory of situated knowledge and agency; and considers the relevance of Freudian thought for contemporary cultural issues.
A guide to the study of how and why you "really" make financial decisions While classical economics is based on the notion that people act with rational self-interest, many key money decisions--like splurging on an expensive watch--can seem far from rational. The field of behavioral economics sheds light on the many subtle and not-so-subtle factors that contribute to our financial and purchasing choices. And in "Behavioral Economics For Dummies," readers will learn how social and psychological factors, such as instinctual behavior patterns, social pressure, and mental framing, can dramatically affect our day-to-day decision-making and financial choices. Based on psychology and rooted in real-world examples, "Behavioral Economics For Dummies" offers the sort of insights designed to help investors avoid impulsive mistakes, companies understand the mechanisms behind individual choices, and governments and nonprofits make public decisions.A friendly introduction to the study of how and why people really make financial decisionsThe author is a professor of behavioral and institutional economics at Victoria University An essential component to improving your financial decision-making (and even to understanding current events), "Behavioral Economics For Dummies" is important for just about anyone who has a bank account and is interested in why--and when--they spend money.

The young don't always believe that evil exists, or that foolish mistakes can invite that evil into their lives. For college student David Fouraker this is a painful lesson he will learn one terrible summer. While enjoying a party weekend at a river fish camp in north Florida, David gets a DUI during a late-night food run for his friends. He believes that's the worst thing that could possibly happen to him. He is wrong. Sentenced to community service, David must spend the summer in the rural county. Concerned about finding an inexpensive place to stay while he works off his court obligations, it seems like amazingly good fortune when realtor Harold Eblis offers to let David stay in one of his properties in exchange for caretaking duties. What David doesn't know is that the smarmy Eblis is not what he seems, and that the house has a dark purpose. Over time, David realizes he wasn't wanted as a caretaker at all. Instead, the forces of darkness want him as bait-someone who will bring those he cares for most into a hellish nightmare from which there is no escape. Pitting himself against the evil that lives in the house the owner calls Casa de Almas-the House of Souls-will change David's life forever. As he develops from a young man living a life of careless frivolity to having concern for his fellow man, David will come to recognize the forces of good and evil, and learn how just one bad decision can lead to dire consequences for oneself and for those one loves.
