The Olympia conference Frontiers of Fundamental Physics was a
gathering of about hundred scientists who carryon their research in
conceptually important areas of physical science (they do
"fundamental physics"). Most of them were physicists, but also
historians and philosophers of science were well represented. An
important fraction of the participants could be considered
"heretical" because they disagreed with the validity of one or
several fundamental assumptions of modern physics. Common to all
participants was an excellent scientific level coupled with a
remarkable intellectual honesty: we are proud to present to the
readers this certainly unique book. Alternative ways of considering
fundamental matters should of course be vitally important for the
progress of science, unless one wanted to admit that physics at the
end of the XXth century has already obtained the final truth, a
very unlikely possibility even if one accepted the doubtful idea of
the existence of a "final" truth. The merits of the Olympia
conference should therefore not be judged a priori in a positive or
in a negative way depending on one's refusal or acceptance,
respectively, but considered after reading the actual of basic
principles of contemporary science, new proposals and evidences
there presented. They seem very important to us.
During the past decade ethical theory has been in a lively state of
development, and three basic approaches to ethics - Kantian ethics,
consequentialism, and virtue ethics - have assumed positions of
particular prominence. Written in the form of a debate, this volume
presents a clear survey and assessment of the main arguments, both
for and against each of these three central approaches to ethics.
In doing so, it represents the first volume to bring these forms of
ethical theory into a critical relationship, engaging current
philosophical debate on the one hand in terms clear enough for
undergraduates on the other.
It is an ideal basis for course use in ethics and moral
philosophy.
The Freedom of Information Act, developed at the height of the Cold
War, highlighted the power struggles between Congress and the
president in that tumultuous era. By drawing on previously unseen
primary source material and exhaustive archival research, this book
reveals the largely untold and fascinating narrative of the
development of the FOIA, and demonstrates how this single policy
issue transformed presidential behaviour. The author explores the
policy's lasting influence on the politics surrounding contemporary
debates on government secrecy, public records and the public's
'right to know', and examines the modern development and use of
'executive privilege'.

All too often, literacy assessments are given only for
accountability purposes and fail to be seen as valuable resources
for planning and differentiating instruction. This clear, concise
book shows K-5 educators how to implement a comprehensive, balanced
assessment battery that integrates accountability concerns with
data-driven instruction. Teachers learn to use different types of
test scores to understand and address students' specific learning
needs. The book features an in-depth case example of a diverse
elementary school that serves many struggling readers and English
language learners. Reproducible planning and progress-monitoring
forms can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11"
size.
Law is a profession that requires the ability to read critically,
write well, synthesize sources from research, and speak concisely
and clearly. "American Legal English "was developed to help
non-native speakers improve their ability to understand and
communicate in English with their legal counterparts around the
world. The text is an introduction to basic legal information and
the U.S. legal system that addresses the major areas of law and
provides actual cases and statutes so that students can become
familiar with legal syntax and legal vocabulary. Each chapter
addresses a particular area of the law and has three parts:
- In the second edition, the language development activities have
been moved to the back of the book and are organized in the
categories of writing, reading, oral communication, grammar, and
culture. An audio CD (978-0-472-00325-9) is available for use in
conjunction with this textbook.

"Gina" is a story about a kidnapping. A twelve-year old girl,
committed to an orphanage along with her six siblings due to her
mother's inability to care for them, disappears in the middle of
the night. Though the crime takes place in Newark, New Jersey, the
victim and the perpetrators are from villages in southern Italy,
and much of the book is set in these villages and other parts of
that country. As the motivation for the kidnapping emerges, it is
seen to be connected to the extreme poverty of the region and the
brutal character of the victim's father, a World War One Italian
army veteran named Pasquale Farinelli. Pasquale's story, along with
the stories of a number of others involved in one way or another,
is interwoven with the story of the kidnapping itself, which ends
in an unexpected way.
Grounded in cutting-edge theory and research about literacy
development, this book is filled with practical assessment and
instructional ideas for teachers of pre-K through grade 3. Engaging
vignettes show how everyday conversations and activities offer rich
opportunities both for evaluating children's current level of
knowledge and for helping them progress toward more sophisticated
and rewarding interactions with reading and writing. Throughout,
the book highlights ways to work effectively with English language
learners and their families, a theme that is the exclusive focus of
two chapters. Other timely topics covered include creative uses of
technology and ways to incorporate popular culture into the
classroom. Over two dozen reproducible assessment tools and
handouts enhance the utility of this volume as an instructional
resource, professional development tool, or graduate-level
text.
Bringing together prominent scholars, this book shows how 21st-
century research and theory can inform everyday instructional
practices in early childhood classrooms (PreK-3). Coverage includes
foundational topics such as alphabet learning, phonological
awareness, oral language development, and learning to write, as
well as cutting-edge topics such as digital literacy, informational
texts, and response to intervention. Every chapter features guiding
questions; an overview of ideas and findings on the topic at hand;
specific suggestions for improving instruction, assessment, and/or
the classroom environment; and an engrossing example of the
practices in action.
