The contributors to this volume provide a critical examination of the notion of bilingualism as it has developed in linguistics and of its use in discourses of social regulation in state and civil society in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. They attempt to move the field away from a common sense, but in fact highly ideologized, view of bilingualism as the co-existence of two linguistic systems, and to develop a critical perspective which approaches bilingualism as a wide variety of sets of sociolinguistics practices connected to the construction of social difference and of social inequality under specific historical conditions.

Some phrases conjure a sense of danger, at least the possibility that something will go wrong. Few drivers become paralyzed with fear when passing a sign warning of potentially adverse road conditions. But there exists the small chance that a slippery surface will cause the vehicle of some hapless motorist to careen off the asphalt, smash through a guardrail and land upside down in a culvert, the car's tires spinning helplessly seconds before a hellish conflagration. (A bit dramatic, yes). Hence the title Bridge May Be Icy for this compendium of mystery, mayhem and murder.
While on a hunting trip Kerry Fitzgerald's father is seriously injured and she thinks life can't get any worse -- but she is wrong. Over the course of one year she gets kicked out of college, abandons her infant son with her parents, moves to California to sell drugs, gets busted and is sentenced to fifteen years in prison. To make things worse her parents don't respond to her letters, her boyfriend, and father of their son, disappears without a trace and she starts thinking she is losing her grip on reality. When she meets fellow prisoner Carol Endicott, a sixties radical, the two women become friends. But despite the comfort Kerry finds in their growing friendship, her depression seems to have no bottom. In an effort to help, Carol shares a secret with her, a truth that will change her life. "You are not who you think you are. You are not Kerry Fitzgerald." And so begins Kerry's journey of spiritual awakening, a process not of self-improvement, but of self-annihilation. A journey from suffering and separation to freedom and love, a pilgrimage inward that will call into question every belief she has ever held dear and challenge her to ask the most important question of her life, "Who am I?"
