Britain Since 1789 - A Concise History (Hardcover): M. Pugh Britain Since 1789 - A Concise History (Hardcover)
M. Pugh
R4,577 Discovery Miles 45 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In Britain since 1789, Martin Pugh offers a stimulating introduction to the fundamental social, political and economic changes that took place in Great Britain from the late eighteenth century to the present day. In his study of this complex and fascinating period, he explores the major factors governing and determining events and asks: How and why did Britain reach her peak as a great industrial power by 1850? What has been the nature and extent of economic decline since the late-Victorian period? How, as violent, revolutionary change swept across Europe, did the aristocratic British political system give way to mass democracy with scarcely a protest? How did Britain manage to acquire a huge empire in the nineteenth century while investing so little in her armed forces? Drawing on the latest historical research, Pugh presents an accessible, concise and yet wide-ranging analysis of the factors that have shaped contemporary Britain. His study culminates in an evaluation of Britain's dilemmas at the end of this century - following the collapse of consensus politics, the rejection of Thatcherism, the emergence of New Labour and the reappraisal of Britain's relationship with Europe.

Liberal Internationalism - The Interwar Movement for Peace in Britain (Hardcover): M. Pugh Liberal Internationalism - The Interwar Movement for Peace in Britain (Hardcover)
M. Pugh
R1,522 Discovery Miles 15 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Concepts and policies deriving from political and social movements in support of liberal nationalism are hotly debated today. Civil society has actively engaged in controversies over intervention in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Lebanon. Pugh investigates the role of popular liberal internationalism as a social movement in Britain, addressing the use of force for peace through an examination of the impact of civil society actors in between wars. The interwar social movements had a massive and lasting influence on British approaches to international politics and influenced the UN's approach to peacekeeping, use of force and peace-building.

This book considers social movements for peace and security which probe below the level of state policies. Using Gramscian and Foucauldian ideas of civil society and society, it critically examines the factions and fluidities of a movement that was suffused with values at once humane and superior, tolerant and dogmatic, universalistic and imperial. Pugh explores one of the most powerful social movements for collective security in modern history, a movement which trespassed conventional political boundaries and provided innovative ideas for constructing peace through collective security.

Historical Analysis of Multinational Logistics and the Concept of National Responsibility in Coalition Military Operations... Historical Analysis of Multinational Logistics and the Concept of National Responsibility in Coalition Military Operations (Paperback)
Philip M Pugh
R1,392 Discovery Miles 13 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study investigates the concept of national responsibility as it relates to providing logistics to nations participating in coalition operations. This concept is the cornerstone of current NATO logistics doctrine. However, recent NATO peacekeeping and offensive peace enforcement operations in the former Yugoslavia challenged the validity of national responsibility as the preeminent logistical principle to sustain and maintain multinational forces in the military operations. To gain insight into current multinational logistics doctrine, this study provides a historical view of the manner in which logistics was provided during World War II, the Korean War, and in Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. These operations provided classic examples of total war, limited war, and operations other than war respectively. The study further reveals that the challenges associated with providing logistics for multinational forces, despite the type of military operation, were similar. In all of these historical examples, the nations with the greatest logistical capability provided that majority of the logistical support for the participating coalition forces. The problems associated with different terminology, cultures, traditions and religions were present each of the coalition operations examined. Lastly this study offers recommendations for military logisticians of both the US and its allies for consideration in future operations.
