Magnetic multilayers is a rapidly growing and multidisciplinary field of research. The purpose of this book is to give a unified overview of recent progress, giving special emphasis to the most important industrial applications. A general introduction is followed by six chapters that describe a wide range of physical aspects, together with experimental and theoretical methods. Scientists and students alike will benefit from the comprehensive discussion of numerous devices and their physics. As the technology matures, these devices, for example spin valves and magnetic random access memories, are likely to become widely used.

The use of ultrasonic imaging techniques for diagnostic purposes in
veteri nary medicine and animal science has lagged far behind their
use in human medicine. In the area of domestic animal reproduction,
diagnostic ultrasono graphy has a relatively short history. Reports
on B-mode scanning first appeared as late as 1969, when Stouffer
and co-workers used it for counting foetal numbers in late
gestation sheep. After Lindahl had re-evaluated the potential of
two-dimensional ultrasonography for pregnancy diagnosis in sheep in
1976, results of the first large scale field-trials by Fowler and
Wilkins on predicting foetal numbers during the first half of
gestation in sheep were published as recently as 1980. In this year
also the first paper, by Palmer and co-workers, on ultrasonic
scanning of the uterus and ovaries in the mare appeared. The
improvement of diagnostics which was achieved by the application of
this technique is illustrated by its present routine use in
clinical equine practice and sheep breeding. Besides offe ring an
accurate early pregnancy diagnosis in species such as the horse,
cow, sheep, goat, pig and dog, ultrasonography enables the
visualization of ovarian and uterine structures for the
identification of both physiological and pathological conditions.
In this way it replaces or supplements the more common diagnostic
techniques used by the general practitioner so far. Ultrasonography
has also opened several new lines of research for clini cians and
research workers."

Capturing the state of the art of the interplay between partial
differential equations, functional analysis, maximal regularity,
and probability theory, this volume was initiated at the Delft
conference on the occasion of the retirement of Philippe Cl ment.
It will be of interest to researchers in PDEs and functional
analysis.

multi-disciplinary field places special emphasis on the industrial
applications of magnetic multilayered materials. The text describes
a wide range of physical aspects, together with experimental and

Some years ago the N etherlands Research Committee for European
Refugee Problems commissioned an investigation into the adjustment
problems of foreigners who for various reasons have taken refuge in
the Netherlands. This investigation is of great interest. In these
times of rapid change we all have our problems of adjustment. How
very much greater these problems must be for those who had to leave
all they cherished behind them and start all over again in new and
strange surroundings. I wholeheartedlyendorse the Committee's
initiative in publish ing in this monograph the main results of the
investigation. These results should be useful in the work of the
organizations concerned with refugee welfare. But in wider circles,
both in the Netherlands and abroad, this publication should also
awaken interest in the refugee question in general and the
situation of refugees in the Nether lands in particular. How
necessary this interest still is has been shown once again by the
recent events in Hungary, which brought untold misery to many
thousands. These Hungarian refugees and countless others who before
them fled can best be helped to adjust to the new patterns of life
if all who in their daily lives come into contact with them
approach them in the right way. But to be able to do that we must
first realize the difficulties the refugees have to contend with.
Therefore the study of this monograph should be of posi tive value
to many people."
Somaly Mam was abandoned as a baby and looked after by her
grandmother until she disappeared. She was then taken into the care
of a man she called 'grandfather', but was treated no better than
an unpaid servant. sold. Raped at twelve, Somaly was forced to
marry at fifteen and then sold to a brothel. She endured years of
abuse before managing to escape. The Road of Lost Innocence is a
moving account of a traumatic childhood and also the inspirational
story of a determined and courageous woman devoted to helping other
girls caught up in the illegal sex trade and violent underworld in
Cambodia. In 1997 Somaly Mam co-founded AFESIP to combat
trafficking in women and children for sexual slavery.
