The demise of any empire provides an occasion for fresh examination
of longaccepted "truths" about its history and its intrinsic
nature: What set this particular empire apart from others? Why did
it develop in the way that it did? Could events have taken a
different path? What legacies has the empire left to its heirs? In
this volume, eminent scholars reflect on the unique and central
features of the Soviet empire during its period of consolidation in
Europe and speculate on the long-term effects of its collapse. They
reconsider subjects that have absorbed Adam Ulam's attention in his
own work-the ideologies of central planning, of totalitarianism and
state terror at home, and of intervention abroad-and explore their
impact on the people who lived under Soviet power at its apogee.
They also analyze the unraveling of the system on the domestic
scene, in elite and grassroots politics, and in the international
arena. Concluding chapters focus on the configuration of new
domestic and foreign policies and on prospects for security and
cooperation in the region.

Saharan trade has been much debated in modern times, but the main
focus of interest remains the medieval and early modern periods,
for which more abundant written sources survive. The pre-Islamic
origins of Trans-Saharan trade have been hotly contested over the
years, mainly due to a lack of evidence. Many of the key
commodities of trade are largely invisible archaeologically, being
either of high value like gold and ivory, or organic like slaves
and textiles or consumable commodities like salt. However, new
research on the Libyan people known as the Garamantes and on their
trading partners in the Sudan and Mediterranean Africa requires us
to revise our views substantially. In this volume experts re-assess
the evidence for a range of goods, including beads, textiles,
metalwork and glass, and use it to paint a much more dynamic
picture, demonstrating that the pre-Islamic Sahara was a more
connected region than previously thought.
This 1983 volume comprises essays written by British and American
scholars to mark the centenary of Dostoyevsky's death in 1881. In
many respects it is a companion volume to New Essays on Tolstoy
published by Cambridge University Press in 1978. The book is
divided into two sections. The first part considers specific works;
there are essays on Dostoyevsky's early work, Crime and Punishment,
The Idiot, The Devils, and The Brothers Karamazov. The second part
ranges more widely over aspects of the great novelist's work and
includes essays on Dostoyevsky's religious thought, on Dostoyevsky
as philosopher, and on formalist and structuralist approaches to
Dostoyevsky's work. The volume concludes with a bibliographical
survey of British writing on Dostoyevsky. The collection will be of
value to anyone with an interest in Russian literature whether in
the original language or in translation.
This ground-breaking volume explores a series of inter-related key
themes in Saharan archaeology and history. Migration and identity
formation can both be approached from the perspective of funerary
archaeology, using the combined evidence of burial structures,
specific rites and funerary material culture, and integrated
methods of skeletal analysis including morphometrics,
palaeopathology and isotopes. Burial traditions from various parts
of the Sahara are compared and contrasted with those of the Nile
Valley, the Maghreb and West Africa. Several chapters deal with the
related evidence of human migration derived from linguistic study.
The volume presents the state of the field of funerary archaeology
in the Sahara and its neighbouring regions and sets the agenda for
future research on mobility, migration and identity. It will be a
seminal reference point for Mediterranean and African
archaeologists, historians and anthropologists as well as
archaeologists interested in burial and migration more broadly.
"Fascinating and instructive...King's philosophy, speaking to us
through the written word, may turn out to constitute his most
enduring legacy." -Annette Gordon-Reed, New York Review of Books
Martin Luther King, Jr., is one of America's most revered figures,
yet despite his mythic stature, the significance of his political
thought remains underappreciated. In this indispensable
reappraisal, leading scholars-including Cornel West, Martha
Nussbaum, and Danielle Allen-consider the substance of his lesser
known writings on racism, economic inequality, virtue ethics,
just-war theory, reparations, voting rights, civil disobedience,
and social justice and find in them an array of compelling
challenges to some of the most pressing political dilemmas of our
time. "King was not simply a compelling speaker, but a deeply
philosophical intellectual...We still have much to learn from him."
-Quartz "A compelling work of philosophy, all the more so because
it treats King seriously without inoculating him from the kind of
critique important to both his theory and practice." -Los Angeles
