This book explores the production of Muslim youth identities, with respect to nation, religion and gender in Pakistan, Senegal, Nigeria and Lebanon. As Muslim-majority, post-colonial states with significant youth populations, these countries offer critical case studies for the exploration of the different grammars of youth identities, and 'trouble' the perceived homogeneity of Muslims in local and global imaginaries. The authors offer rigorous and detailed accounts of the local, situated and contingent ways in which youth articulate their identities and sense of belonging, and the book reflects on the importance of affect, belonging and affiliation in the construction of youth narratives of identity as well as highlighting their political and contested nature. Troubling Muslim Youth Identities will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of development studies, social and cultural studies, gender, geography, education, and peace and conflict studies.

Some of this work is for wages, some is on their family's own small plots and some is forced and/or harmful. This book examines children's involvement in such work. It argues that framing all children's engagement in economic activity as 'child labour', with all the associated negative connotations, is problematic. This is particularly the case in Africa where many rural children must work to survive and where, the contributors argue, much of the work undertaken is not harmful. The conceptual and case-based chapters reframe the debate about children's work and harm in rural Africa with the aim of shifting research, public discourse and policy so that they better serve the interest of rural children and their families.

This collection originates in papers presented at an international conference held at the University of Sussex in September 2004. It brings together academic contributions from specialists working in a newly emergent area of study, that of education in situations of conflict. It seeks to promote understanding of the complex ways in which education can play both a reproductive and a transformative role in such circumstances. To this end, it offers two broad perspectives, one around education in conflict and post-conflict settings, and the other around education for reconciliation and social inclusion. The book is organised into thematic sections, with material drawn from countries undergoing, or emerging from, conflict as well as from more stable societies. The first set of chapters examines different facets of the impact of armed conflict on education, while the second set explores the ways in which education can contribute to reconstruction and reconciliation and the particular challenges of rebuilding educational systems after protracted conflict. The following set of chapters examines issues of conflict associated with everyday school contexts, in which violence may be perpetrated by students, teachers or outsiders to the school. The last two sections turn to the role of education in promoting reconciliation and social inclusion.
