Troubling Muslim Youth Identities - Nation, Religion, Gender (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Mairead Dunne, Naureen Durrani,... Troubling Muslim Youth Identities - Nation, Religion, Gender (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Mairead Dunne, Naureen Durrani, Kathleen Fincham, Barbara Crossouard
R3,285 Discovery Miles 32 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores the production of Muslim youth identities, with respect to nation, religion and gender in Pakistan, Senegal, Nigeria and Lebanon. As Muslim-majority, post-colonial states with significant youth populations, these countries offer critical case studies for the exploration of the different grammars of youth identities, and 'trouble' the perceived homogeneity of Muslims in local and global imaginaries. The authors offer rigorous and detailed accounts of the local, situated and contingent ways in which youth articulate their identities and sense of belonging, and the book reflects on the importance of affect, belonging and affiliation in the construction of youth narratives of identity as well as highlighting their political and contested nature. Troubling Muslim Youth Identities will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of development studies, social and cultural studies, gender, geography, education, and peace and conflict studies.

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Millions of children throughout Africa undertake many forms of farm and domestic work. Some of this work is for wages, some is on their family's own small plots and some is forced and/or harmful. This book examines children's involvement in such work. It argues that framing all children's engagement in economic activity as 'child labour', with all the associated negative connotations, is problematic. This is particularly the case in Africa where many rural children must work to survive and where, the contributors argue, much of the work undertaken is not harmful. The conceptual and case-based chapters reframe the debate about children's work and harm in rural Africa with the aim of shifting research, public discourse and policy so that they better serve the interest of rural children and their families.

Education, Conflict and Reconciliation - International Perspectives (Paperback): Fiona Leach, Mairead Dunne Education, Conflict and Reconciliation - International Perspectives (Paperback)
Fiona Leach, Mairead Dunne
R2,141 Discovery Miles 21 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This collection originates in papers presented at an international conference held at the University of Sussex in September 2004. It brings together academic contributions from specialists working in a newly emergent area of study, that of education in situations of conflict. It seeks to promote understanding of the complex ways in which education can play both a reproductive and a transformative role in such circumstances. To this end, it offers two broad perspectives, one around education in conflict and post-conflict settings, and the other around education for reconciliation and social inclusion. The book is organised into thematic sections, with material drawn from countries undergoing, or emerging from, conflict as well as from more stable societies. The first set of chapters examines different facets of the impact of armed conflict on education, while the second set explores the ways in which education can contribute to reconstruction and reconciliation and the particular challenges of rebuilding educational systems after protracted conflict. The following set of chapters examines issues of conflict associated with everyday school contexts, in which violence may be perpetrated by students, teachers or outsiders to the school. The last two sections turn to the role of education in promoting reconciliation and social inclusion.

Youth and the Rural Economy in Africa - Hard Work and Hazard (Hardcover): James Sumberg Youth and the Rural Economy in Africa - Hard Work and Hazard (Hardcover)
James Sumberg; Contributions by Jordan Chamberlin, Barbara Crossouard, Mairead Dunne, Justin Flynn, …
R3,171 Discovery Miles 31 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book unites recent findings from quantitative and qualitative research from across Africa to illuminate how young men and women engage with the rural economy and imagine their futures, and how development policies and interventions can find traction with these realities. Through framing, overview and evidence-based chapters, this book provides a critical perspective on current discourse, research and development interventions around youth and rural development. Chapters are organized around commonly-made foundational claims: that large numbers of young people are leaving rural areas, have no interest in agriculture, cannot access land, can be the engine of rural transformation, are stuck in permanent waithood, and that the rural economy can provide a wealth of opportunity. This book: Engages with and challenges current research, policy and development debates. Considers social difference as a way of examining the category of youth. Is written by authors from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, providing varied perspectives. This book draws from existing literature and new analysis of several multi-country and multi-disciplinary studies, focusing on gender and other aspects of social difference. It is suitable for researchers, policy makers and advocates, as well as postgraduate students in international development and agricultural economics.

This book brings together recent findings from quantitative and qualitative research from across Africa to illuminate how young men and women engage with the rural economy, imagine their futures and how development policies and interventions find traction (or not) with these realities. Through framing, overview and evidence-based chapters, it provides a critical perspective on current discourse, research and development interventions around youth and rural development. It is organised around commonly-made foundational claims: that large numbers of young people are leaving rural areas; have no interest in agriculture; cannot access land; are stuck in permanent waithood; that the rural economy provides (or can provide) a wealth of opportunity; and that they can be the engine of rural transformation. It draws from existing literature and new analysis arising from several multi-country and multi-disciplinary studies, focusing on gender and other aspects of social difference. It is a major contribution to current debates and development policy about youth, agriculture and employment in rural Africa.

Becoming a Researcher: A Research Companion for the Social Sciences (Paperback, Ed): Mairead Dunne, John Pryor, Paul Yates Becoming a Researcher: A Research Companion for the Social Sciences (Paperback, Ed)

R987 Discovery Miles 9 870 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This innovative book combines what most books separate: research as practical activity and research as intellectual engagement. It clarifies and makes explicit the methodological issues that underlie the journey from initial research idea to the finished report and beyond. .

. The text moves the researcher logically through the research process and provides insights into methodology through an in-depth discussion of methods. It presents the research process as an engagement with text. This theme moves through the construction of text in the form of data and the deconstruction of text in analysis. Finally the focus moves to the reconstruction of text through the re-presentation of the research in the report. Following through each of these stages in turn, the chapters consider either a practical issue or a group of methods and interrogate the associated methodological concerns. In addition, the book also addresses the rarely explored issues of the researcher as writer and researcher identity as core elements of the research process. .

. The book provides a range of insights and original perspectives. These successfully combine practical guidance with the invitation to consider the problematic nature of research as social practice. It is an ideal reference for those embarking on research for the first time and provides a new methodological agenda for established researchers..
