Manuela Albertone; Edited by A De Francesco; Antonino De Francesco
R1,542 Discovery Miles 15 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Languages of Reform in the Eighteenth Century - When Europe Lost Its Fear of Change (Paperback): Susan Richter, Thomas Maissen,... Languages of Reform in the Eighteenth Century - When Europe Lost Its Fear of Change (Paperback)
Susan Richter, Thomas Maissen, Manuela Albertone
R1,420 Discovery Miles 14 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Societies perceive "Reform" or "Reforms" as substantial changes and significant breaks which must be well-justified. The Enlightenment brought forth the idea that the future was uncertain and could be shaped by human beings. This gave the concept of reform a new character and new fields of application. Those who sought support for their plans and actions needed to reflect, develop new arguments, and offer new reasons to address an anonymous public. This book aims to compile these changes under the heuristic term of "languages of reform." It analyzes the structures of communication regarding reforms in the 18th century through a wide variety of topics.

National Identity and the Agrarian Republic - The Transatlantic Commerce of Ideas between America and France (1750-1830)... National Identity and the Agrarian Republic - The Transatlantic Commerce of Ideas between America and France (1750-1830) (Paperback)
Manuela Albertone
R1,841 Discovery Miles 18 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

With a few exceptions, historiography has paid little attention to the impact of French economic thought during the American Revolution, focusing instead on the Revolution's links with Britain. This book outlines how, from the mid-eighteenth to the early-nineteenth century, the political and social dimension of French economic thought, and particularly of Physiocracy, spurred American Republicans to a radical shaping of American agrarian ideology. Such a perspective allows for a reconsideration of several questions that lie at the heart of contemporary historiographic debate: the connection between politics and economics; the meaning of republicanism; the foundations of representation; the role of Europe in the Atlantic world; and the interaction between national histories and global context. In particular, the research methodology adopted here makes it possible to reconstruct how American national identity, conceived as an expression of society in economic terms, emerged through a cosmopolitan way of thinking focused on the uniqueness of the new state.
