The American Synagogue - A Historical Dictionary and Sourcebook (Hardcover, New): Kerry Olitzky, Marc Raphael The American Synagogue - A Historical Dictionary and Sourcebook (Hardcover, New)
Kerry Olitzky, Marc Raphael
R2,425 Discovery Miles 24 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The institution of the American synagogue has played a significant role in the history of American Judaism, which remains an incomplete history if it is limited to the lives of individuals and events. This work helps complete the history as it is the first reference book to document the historical development of many individual synagogues in the United States and Canada. It includes over 350 entries of synagogues from among the four main movements, each of which have made an impact on the Jewish community, either locally or beyond. It is an essential tool for researchers, scholars, and students, as well as anyone interested in the historical aspects of American Judaism. An essay on the historical development of the American Synagogue by Frances Weinman Schwartz, introduces the volume. Entries are arranged alphabetically by city within each state. Synagogue descriptions include the date of the congregation's founding, the reason for its founding and its congregational mission, the history of buildings and neighborhood, its local or national historical impact, its significance in the movement to which it belongs, major episodes in the congregation's history, as well as details about the service of its rabbis. A brief bibliography follows each entry, and a general bibliography and index complete the volume.

Orthodox Judaism in America - A Biographical Dictionary and Sourcebook (Hardcover, New): Marc Raphael, Moshe Sherman Orthodox Judaism in America - A Biographical Dictionary and Sourcebook (Hardcover, New)
Marc Raphael, Moshe Sherman
R2,397 Discovery Miles 23 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The last in a series of three volumes edited by Marc Lee Raphael surveying some of the major rabbinic and lay personalities who have shaped Judaism in America for the past two centuries, this work focuses on Orthodox Judaism. Along with a basic description of the achievements of some of the most notable leaders, a bibliography of their writings and sources for further study is included as well as an essay on Orthodox rabbinic organizations and a survey of American Orthodox periodicals. Of interest to scholars, students, and lay persons alike, this volume will inform readers about the earliest communities of Jews who settled in America as they developed the institutions of Orthodox Jewish life and set a public standard of compliance with Jewish law. These early American Jews followed a Spanish-Dutch version of Sephardic customs and rites. Their synagogues used traditional prayer books, promoted the celebration of Jewish holidays, established mikvahs, acquired Passover provisions, and arranged for cemetery land and burial services. While many of these Sephardic immigrants did not maintain halakha in their daily regimen as did their European counterparts, they set a public standard of compliance with Jewish law, thus honoring Jewish tradition. Further immigration of thousands of Jews from Western and Central Europe in the middle of the 19th century brought a world of traditional piety and extensive Jewish learning to America, exemplified by Rabbi Abraham Rice, who served in Baltimore, and Yissachar Dov (Bernard) Illowy, who served communities from Philadelphia to New Orleans. Such men marked the beginning of a learned and scholarly rabbinate in America. This volume provides valuablebiographical insights regarding some of the most notable religious leaders in American Orthodoxy.

R2,418 Discovery Miles 24 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This valuable reference extensively documents the lives and careers of the most influential leaders of Reform Judaism in America. The editors have assembled concise but informative biographical profiles of approximately 170 people. The work spans the period from the beginning of the Reform movement in 1824 through the 1976 Centenary Perspective. The individuals profiled were selected because of their impact on Reform Judaism at a national level. Included are the principal architects of reform, national organizational leaders, distinguished rabbis and academicians, outstanding cantors, volunteer lay activists, and women. The work begins with an essay on the history of Reform Judaism in America. A biographical dictionary follows. Each entry in the dictionary assesses the career and contributions of a particular leader and closes with a short bibliography of works by and about that individual. The dictionary is followed by a set of essays that overview the history of associations related to Reform Judaism. A section of appendices lists the principal figures affiliated with these organizations. An extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources concludes the work, making it an indispensable reference tool.

When Night Fell - An Anthology of Holocaust Short Stories (Paperback): Linda Raphael, Marc Raphael When Night Fell - An Anthology of Holocaust Short Stories (Paperback)
Linda Raphael, Marc Raphael
R1,151 Discovery Miles 11 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"This important anthology sheds much light on the aesthetic and moral role of writers in representing the Shoah. By including both survivors and non-witnessing authors in their study, the Raphaels emphasize the universal and ongoing nature of this crucial issue." --Alan L. Berger, author, Children of Job: American Second-Generation Witnesses to the Holocaust "The Raphaels have gathered for us--teachers, students, readers--a collection of short stories built on silence: from the unspeakable events of the Holocaust through the profound silence of history to the decorous silence of racism and probity. 'The story of the Holocaust] is never-ending, ' says the introduction. Without this book we'd know less than we must know to stay alive." --Hilda Raz, editor, The Prairie Schooner Anthology of Contemporary Jewish Writing Both survivors of the Holocaust and those who were not there agree that it is impossible to tell what happened as the Nazi Final Solution was put into effect. No writing can adequately imagine the concentration camps, ghettos, and death camps. And that is precisely why writers must tell--and retell--what happened there. In When Night Fell, Linda Schermer Raphael and Marc Lee Raphael have collected twenty-six short stories that tell of the human toll of the Holocaust on those who survived its horrors, as well as later generations touched by its memory. The stories are framed by discussion of the current debate about who owns the Holocaust and who is entitled to speak about it. Some of the stories included here are by internationally acclaimed authors. Others may be new to many readers. When Night Fell is a fitting memorial to this genocidal horror, putting eloquent voice to human endurance that is--almost--beyond words. The authors included in When Night Fell: S. Y. Agnon, Yehuda Amichai, Aharon Appelfeld, Sholem Asch, Giorgio Bassani, Rachmil Bryks, Chaver Paver, Ida (Stein) Fink, Pierre Gascar, Chaim Grade, Henryk Grynberg, Rachel Haring Korn, Arnost Lustig, Sara Nomberg-Przytyk, Hans Peter Richter, Isaiah Spiegel, Leonard Tushnet, S. L. Wisenberg, and Jerzy Zawieyski.
