When Indonesia's Minister of Agriculture discovers, in the run up
to the Presidential elections, that the country's usual sugar
stockpile is in short supply, the government's principal concern
shifts to the replenishment of this staple commodity in a desperate
attempt to avoid social unrest at a time when it is least desired.
Such a mammoth purchase of sugar, however, offers scope for
fraudulent activity and the Chinese trading company employed to
oversee the transaction uses the purchase as cover-up for an
illegal drugs deal. The door is inevitably opened for the various
contributors to the overlapping deals to engage themselves in a
series of seemingly independent illegal activities, and when the
first sugar shipment arrives, complete with one tonne of heroin,
the latter is adulterated. with fatal consequences for some and
leaving everyone else fearing for their own safety and wondering
just whom they can trust in the deal.
"Noble Rot manages to unravel the mysteries of wine with insight
and humour. A wonderful - and essential - read for anyone
interested in the world of wine, or even for those, like me, who
just drink it." Nigella Lawson "The Noble Rot guys have the ability
to describe wines as if they're either future friends, or
rock-stars coming to blow your mind." Caitlin Moran "Noble Rot has
brought originality, humour and now space travel to the very
serious business of drinking wine. About time too." Brian Eno "Dan
and Mark do that thing that only crazy knowledgeable enthusiasts
can do, they make you a crazy enthusiast too. If they said, 'We've
found a wine like no other, a wine that actually lights up the sky,
but you can only drink it in the desert at midnight, are you
coming?' I'd be off, and I'd be confident of meteor showers. They
provoke curiosity - 'how does anyone make this extraordinary drink
just with grapes?' - excitement, joy, and a longing for knowledge.
Now, in this book, they're sharing the knowledge." Diana Henry "To
really know and love a wine one should know the grower and the
vineyard. This isn't always or even often possible, which is why
the Rotters introduce these wines at source. You learn that making
wine, as cooking should be, is an act of love. You will come to
love this book too." Rowley Leigh Choosing wine in a restaurant or
shop can seem an unfathomable business. But, according to Dan
Keeling and Mark Andrew, the duo behind London's Noble Rot, it
needn't be that way. In Wine from Another Galaxy they'll help you
to understand how it is made, where to buy it, what to look for
when you drink it, and how to talk about it. And once you've
mastered the basics, they'll take you on a journey through the best
of European wine culture, meeting the people and places behind
their favourite bottles. Indeed, Dan and Mark have spent years
visiting growers that you probably haven't heard of, from the
original thinkers of the natural wine movement to the iconic
estates of Burgundy and Bordeaux. This is the alternative,
accessible, no-holds-barred guide to wine, where the usual cliches
and rules don't apply.
This book reports on the first empirical validation of "AccuRate,"
Australia's national benchmark software tool for house energy
ratings. The validation was conducted by the University of Tasmania
in collaboration with Forest and Wood Products Australia, the
Australian Government, the CSIRO and industry partners. The study
presented here describes the results of graphical and statistical
analysis of variations observed between the measured and simulated
data from three different test buildings in Launceston, Tasmania.
It shows that, while the AccuRate software is well suited to
modeling energy flows, there are discrepancies between the
simulated and measured temperatures of the test buildings.
Moreover, it highlights possible connections between the
discrepancies in all zones and the outside air temperature, wind
speed, global and diffuse solar radiation, and possibly the ground
model. Beyond its contribution to further investigations into the
ongoing improvement and calibration of the Australian
NatHERS-supported AccuRate software, this book also meticulously
describes the methodology used in conducting the research, which is
expected to pave the way for further studies of this type.
This book provides a technical history of Ferranti synchronous
electric clocks, including details of movements and cases and the
development story. The book also has a catalogue of all clocks made
by Ferranti between 1932 and 1957

This book contains twenty-eight papers by participants in the NATO
Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "Cognitive and Linguistic Aspects
of Geographic Space," held in Las Navas del Maxques, Spain, July
8-20, 1990. The NATO ASI marked a stage in a two-year research
project at the U. S. National Center for Geographic Infonnation and
Analysis (NCOIA). In 1987, the U. S. National Science Foundation
issued a solicitation for proposals to establish the NCGIA-and one
element of that solicitation was a call for research on a
"fundamental theory of spatial relations." We felt that such a
fundamental theory could be searched for in mathematics (geometry,
topology) or in cognitive science, but that a simultaneous search
in these two seemingly disparate research areas might produce novel
results. Thus, as part of the NCGIA proposal from a consortium
consisting of the University of California at Santa Barbara, the
State University of New York at Buffalo, and the University of
Maine, we proposed that the second major Research Initiative (two
year, multidisciplinary research project) of the NCOIA would
address these issues, and would be called "Languages of Spatial
Relations" The grant to establish the NCOIA was awarded to our
consortium late in 1988.
Clinical sport psychology is a rapidly growing field that brings
together research and clinical interventions from both clinical
psychology and sport and performance psychology. Complementary to
sports medicine and clinical sport psychiatry, clinical sport
psychology addresses the mental health needs and psychological
well-being of athletes, coaches, and other members of the sport
community. It offers scientifically informed conceptualizations of
psychological distress as it manifests in sport settings, as well
as empirically supported clinical interventions tailored to the
needs of sport populations. This volume addresses the latest
research findings regarding mental health among athletes and other
sport professionals, including epidemiological research concerning
depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and conduct and
interpersonal problems. In addition, it explores the unique
etiology of mental health problems among athletes, including
psychological sequelae of injury and trauma, as well as concise
practice guidelines for conceptualizing and treating psychological
distress in sport populations. Strategies for thorough yet
efficient psychological assessment of athletes, coaches, and other
sport professionals are also provided. A compendium of relevant
empirical research and clinical best practices for assessment and
treatment, this handbook charts the course that clinical sport
psychology has taken since its inception as a distinct clinical
specialty and highlights future directions for this rapidly growing
practice domain. It offers essential reading for psychologists and
other mental health professionals who provide clinical services in
sport and performance settings.
To fully function in today's global real estate industry, students
and professionals increasingly need to understand how to implement
essential and cutting-edge quantitative techniques. This book
presents an easy-to-read guide to applying quantitative analysis in
real estate aimed at non-cognate undergraduate and masters
students, and meets the requirements of modern professional
practice. Through case studies and examples illustrating
applications using data sourced from dedicated real estate
information providers and major firms in the industry, the book
provides an introduction to the foundations underlying statistical
data analysis, common data manipulations and understanding
descriptive statistics, before gradually building up to more
advanced quantitative analysis, modelling and forecasting of real
estate markets. Our examples and case studies within the chapters
have been specifically compiled for this book and explicitly
designed to help the reader acquire a better understanding of the
quantitative methods addressed in each chapter. Our objective is to
equip readers with the skills needed to confidently carry out their
own quantitative analysis and be able to interpret empirical
results from academic work and practitioner studies in the field of
real estate and in other asset classes. Both undergraduate and
masters level students, as well as real estate analysts in the
professions, will find this book to be essential reading.

knowledge and skills gradually. This book: Focuses on providing
practical guidance for all aspects, helping readers get to grips
with the tools, software, and statistical methods needed to provide
the right type and level of analysis their data requires Explores
the foundations of data science and breaks down the processes
involved, focusing on the link between data science and practical
social science skills Introduces R at the outset and includes
extensive worked examples and R code every step of the way,
ensuring students see the value of R and its connection to methods
while providing hands-on practice in the software Provides examples
and datasets from different disciplines and locations demonstrate
the widespread relevance, possible applications, and impact of data
science across the social sciences.

Leeds, 1980. Amid the violence and decay, the city was home to an
extraordinarily vibrant post-punk scene. Out of that swamp crawled
the Sisters of Mercy. Over the next five years, they would rise
from local heroes to leading alternative band, before blowing apart
on the verge of major rock stardom. Their path was strewn with
brilliant singles, astonishing EPs, exceptional album tracks and
legendary live shows. Two classic line-ups were created and
destroyed: Andrew Eldritch on vocals, Craig Adams on bass, Gary
Marx and Ben Gunn - later replaced by Wayne Hussey - on guitars,
and a drum machine called Doktor Avalanche. Drawing on dozens of
interviews with band members and key figures in the Sisters'
journey, Paint My Name in Black and Gold is the most complete
account yet of how - against the odds and all reasonable
expectation - these young men came to make transcendent and
life-changing music.
Much of the scholarship on Thomas Jefferson characterizes him as a
consummate immoralist. Yet he had a keen interest in morality and
most of his reading-when he was not immersed in politics-was for
moral study. Jefferson once told his physician, Vine Utley, that he
seldom went to sleep without first reading something morally
inspiring. Some Jefferson scholars consider him at best a moral
dilettante with incoherent views. Others see him as a Stoic,
interested in virtue as measured by intentions and outcomes, who in
later life became an Epicurean, weighing pleasure versus ends.
Drawing on a careful reading of his writings and an examination of
his known readings on morality, this study argues that Jefferson
developed early a consistent moral sense-Stoical in essence and
focused on his own moral improvement-and maintained it throughout
his life.

20 years ago, from July 8 to 20, 1990, 60 researchers gathered for
two weeks at Castillo-Palacio Magalia in Las Navas del Marques
(Avila Province, Spain) to discuss cognitive and linguistic aspects
of geographic space. This meeting was the start of successful
research on cognitive issues in geographic information science,
produced an edited book (D. M. Mark and A. U. Frank, Eds., 1991,
Cognitive and Linguistic Aspects of Geographic Space. NATO ASI
Series D: Behavioural and Social Sciences 63. Kluwer,
Dordrecht/Boston/London), and led to a biannual conference (COSIT),
a refereed journal (Spatial Cognition and Computation), and a
substantial and still growing research community. It appeared
worthwhile to assess the achievements and to reconsider the
research challenges twenty years later. What has changed in the age
of computational ontologies and cyber-infrastructures? Consider
that 1990 the web was only about to emerge and the very first
laptops had just appeared! The 2010 meeting brought together many
of the original participants, but was also open to others, and
invited contributions from all who are researching these topics.
Early-career scientists, engineers, and humanists working at the
intersection of cognitive science and geographic information
science were invited to help with the re-assessment of research
needs and approaches. The meeting was very successful and compared
the research agenda laid out in the 1990 book with achievements
over the past twenty years and then turned to the future: What are
the challenges today? What are worthwhile goals for basic research?
What can be achieved in the next 20 years? What are the lessons
learned? This edited book will assess the current state of the
field through chapters by participants in the 1990 and 2010
meetings and will also document an interdisciplinary research
agenda for the future.

Archaeological data from the Late Archaic (4000-2000 years ago) in
the Western Great Lakes are analyzed to understand the production
and movement of copper and lithic exchange materials. Also
considered in this volume are access to and benefits from exchange
networks, as well as social changes accompanying the development of
extensive, continental scale, exchange systems of interaction in
this period.
Throughout the nineteenth century, the land known as ""Indian
Territory"" was populated by diverse cultures, troubled by shifting
political boundaries, and transformed by historical events that
were colorful, dramatic, and often tragic. Beyond its borders, most
Americans visualized the area through the pictures produced by
non-Native travelers, artists, and reporters - all with differing
degrees of accuracy, vision, and skill. The images in Picturing
Indian Territory, and the eponymous exhibit it accompanies, conjure
a wildly varied vision of Indian Territory's past. Spanning nearly
nine decades, these artworks range from the scientific
illustrations found in English naturalist Thomas Nuttall's journal
to the paintings of Frederic Remington, Henry Farny, and Charles
Schreyvogel. The volume's three essays situate these works within
the historical narratives of westward expansion, the creation of an
""Indian Territory"" separate from the rest of the United States,
and Oklahoma's eventual statehood in 1907. James Peck focuses on
artists who produced images of Native Americans living in this vast
region during the pre-Civil War era. In his essay, B. Byron Price
picks up the story at the advent of the Civil War and examines
newspaper and magazine reports as well as the accounts of
government functionaries and artist-travelers drawn to the region
by the rapidly changing fortunes of the area's traditional Indian
cultures in the wake of non-Indian settlement. Mark Andrew White
then looks at the art and illustration resulting from the
unrelenting efforts of outsiders who settled Indian and Oklahoma
Territories in the decades before statehood. Some of the artworks
featured in this volume have never before been displayed; some were
produced by more than one artist; others are anonymous. Many were
completed by illustrators on-site, as the events they depicted
unfolded, while other artists relied on written accounts and vivid
imaginations. Whatever their origin, these depictions of the
people, places, and events of ""Indian Country"" defined the region
for contemporary American and European audiences. Today they
provide a rich visual record of a key era of western and Oklahoma
history - and of the ways that art has defined this important
cultural crossroads.
Kill the Recipe is a cookbook and visual guidebook on the basics of
