Software programs are formal entities with precise meanings independent of their programmers, so the transition from ideas to programs necessarily involves a formalisation at some point. The first part of this graduate-level introduction to formal methods develops an understanding of what constitutes formal methods and what their place is in Software Engineering. It also introduces logics as languages to describe reasoning and the process algebra CSP as a language to represent behaviours. The second part offers specification and testing methods for formal development of software, based on the modelling languages CASL and UML. The third part takes the reader into the application domains of normative documents, human machine interfaces, and security.  Use of notations and formalisms is uniform throughout the book. Topics and features: Explains foundations, and introduces specification, verification, and testing methods Explores various application domains Presents realistic and practical examples, illustrating concepts Brings together contributions from highly experienced educators and researchers Offers modelling and analysis methods for formal development of software Suitable for graduate and undergraduate courses in software engineering, this uniquely practical textbook will also be of value to students in informatics, as well as to scientists and practical engineers,  who want to learn about or work more effectively with formal theories and methods. Markus Roggenbach is a Professor in the Dept. of Computer Science of Swansea University. Antonio Cerone is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Computer Science of Nazarbayev University, Nur-Sultan. Bernd-Holger Schlingloff is a Professor in the Institut für Informatik of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Gerardo Schneider is a Professor in the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering of University of Gothenburg. Siraj Ahmed Shaikh is a Professor in the Institute for Future Transport and Cities of Coventry University. The companion site for the book offers additional resources, including further material for selected chapters, prepared lab classes, a list of errata, slides and teaching material, and virtual machines with preinstalled tools and resources for hands-on experience with examples from the book. The URL is: https://sefm-book.github.io

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Algebra and Coalgebra in Computer Science, CALCO 2005, held in Swansea, UK in September 2005. The biennial conference was created by joining the International Workshop on Coalgebraic Methods in Computer Science (CMCS) and the Workshop on Algebraic Development Techniques (WADT). It addresses two basic areas of application for algebras and coalgebras a" as mathematical objects as well as their application in computer science.

The 25 revised full papers presented together with 3 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 62 submissions. The papers deal with the following subjects: automata and languages; categorical semantics; hybrid, probabilistic, and timed systems; inductive and coinductive methods; modal logics; relational systems and term rewriting; abstract data types; algebraic and coalgebraic specification; calculi and models of concurrent, distributed, mobile, and context-aware computing; formal testing and quality assurance; general systems theory and computational models (chemical, biological, etc); generative programming and model-driven development; models, correctness and (re)configuration of hardware/middleware/architectures; re-engineering techniques (program transformation); semantics of conceptual modelling methods and techniques; semantics of programming languages; validation and verification.

R2,079 Discovery Miles 20 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Festschrift, dedicated to Jan Peleska on the occasion of his 65th birthday, contains papers written by many of his closest collaborators in academic and industry research.  After studying mathematics at the University of Hamburg, Jan worked with Philips and Deutsche System-Technik on fault-tolerant systems, distributed systems, database systems, and safety-critical embedded systems. Since 1994 he has worked as a consultant to industry, specializing in development methods, verification, validation and test of safety-critical systems, and since 1995 he has been a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Bremen.  In his research he has been most interested in the combination and application of existing methods and corresponding tools to real-world problems, particularly in the field of safety-critical embedded systems and distributed systems, including avionics and railway control systems. The papers in this volume reflect those interests, and the impact he has had on colleagues and collaborators. The volume is structured into sections on testing; railway verification and safety & security; intelligent systems and cyber-physical systems; and tools and techniques for specification, verification and code generation.

R1,557 Discovery Miles 15 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 25th International Workshop on Algebraic Development Techniques, WADT 2020, held virtually in April 2020.The 7 revised papers presented together with an invited paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 9 submissions. The contributed presentations covered a range of topics about the algebraic approach to system specification, which encompasses many aspects of the formal design of software systems. Originally born as formal method for reasoning about abstract data types, the algebraic approach now covers new specification frameworks and programming paradigms (such as object-oriented, aspect-oriented, agent-oriented, logic, and higher-order functional programming) as well as a wide range of application areas (including information systems, concurrent, distributed, and mobile systems).

This volume constitutes the post-workshop proceedings of the First International Workshop on Formal Methods - Fun for Everybody, FMFun 2019, held in Bergen, Norway, in December 2019.The 7 revised full papers and 2 revised short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 15 submissions. A white paper and two keynote papers are also included. The papers explore ways of utilizing the pathway to transforming and spreading formal methods. The vision of this workshop series is that formal methods ought to be taught in such a way that every student can have fun with it.

Stefan Gruner, Apurva Kumar, Tom Maibaum, Markus Roggenbach
R1,557 Discovery Miles 15 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the clarification of what actually a handbook is, the systematic identification of what ought to be considered as "settled knowledge" (extracted from historic repositories) for inclusion into such a handbook, and the "assembly" of such identified knowledge into a form which is fit for the purpose and conforms to the formal characteristics of handbooks as a "literary genre". For many newly emerging domains or disciplines, for which no handbook with normative authority has yet been defined, the question arises of how to do this systematically and in a non-arbitrary manner. This book is the first to reflect upon the question of how to construct a desktop handbook. It is demonstrated how concept analysis can be used for identifying settled knowledge as the key ingredient by utilizing the assembled data for classification; a presentation scheme for handbook articles is developed and demonstrated to be suitable. The sketched approach is then illustrated by an example from the railway safety domain. Finally, the limitations of the presented methods are discussed. The key contribution of this book is the (example illustrated) construction method itself, not the handbook, which would result from a highly detailed and thoroughly comprehensive application of the method.
