Evaluating the Language of Argument (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Martin Hinton Evaluating the Language of Argument (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Martin Hinton
R2,646 Discovery Miles 26 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is concerned with the evaluation of natural argumentative discourse, and, in particular, with the language in which arguments are expressed. It introduces a systematic procedure for the analysis and assessment of arguments, which is designed to be a practical tool, and may be considered a pseudo-algorithm for argument evaluation. The first half of the book lays the theoretical groundwork, with a thorough examination of both the nature of language and the nature of argument. This leads to a definition of argumentation as reasoning expressed within a procedure, which itself yields the three frames of analysis used in the evaluation procedure: Process, Reasoning, and Expression. The second half begins with a detailed discussion of the concept of fallacy, with particular attention on fallacies of language, their origin and their effects. A new way of looking at fallacies emerges from these chapters, and it is that conception, together with the understanding of the nature of argumentation described in earlier sections, which ultimately provides the support for the Comprehensive Assessment Procedure for Natural Argumentation. The first two levels of this innovative procedure are outlined, while the third, that dealing with language, and involving the development of an Informal Argument Semantics, is fully described. The use of the system, and its power of analysis, are illustrated through the evaluation of a variety of examples of argumentative texts.

Evidence, Experiment and Argument in Linguistics and the Philosophy of Language (Hardcover, New edition): Martin Hinton Evidence, Experiment and Argument in Linguistics and the Philosophy of Language (Hardcover, New edition)
Martin Hinton
R1,659 Discovery Miles 16 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume is concerned with issues in experimental philosophy and experimental linguistics. Examining experiments in language from a variety of perspectives, it asks what form they should take and what should count as evidence. There is particular focus on the status of linguistic intuitions and the use of language corpora. A number of papers address issues of methodology in experimental work, while other contributions examine the use of thought experiments and what the hypothetical can tell us about the actual. The aim of this collection is to bring together the work of linguists and philosophers in order that they may learn from one another, and to help both groups understand how the use of experimental methods can affect the arguments they employ and the claims they make.

Martin Hinton, Daryle Rigney, Elliott Johnston
R4,628 Discovery Miles 46 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Bringing together a well-respected team of commentators, many of them indigenous Australians themselves, this revised and updated edition examines the legal, social and political developments that have taken place in Australia since the publication of the last edition.

Providing students with a greater understanding of the issues facing Indigenous Australians in the hope of contributing to reconciliation, the authors explore a broad range of developments, including: human rights and reconciliation in contemporary Australia; the demise of ATSIC; issues of indigenous governance and water rights.

Giving readers an incisive account of the resounding impact of social, political and legal conditions upon the Indigenous people of Australia and their interaction with and recourse to the law, this book is an excellent resource for those interested in the law of a coloniser or conqueror and its lasting impact upon first nations.
