The New World Primates - Adaptive Radiation and the Evolution of Social Behavior, Languages, and Intelligence (Hardcover):... The New World Primates - Adaptive Radiation and the Evolution of Social Behavior, Languages, and Intelligence (Hardcover)
Martin Moynihan
R3,230 Discovery Miles 32 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The New World primates have radiated widely in tropical America, evolving a variety of adaptations to cope with different ways of life. This comparative survey examines many species. Some are highly specialized in unique ways; others have paralleled the lemurs of Madagascar or the monkeys and apes of Africa and Asia. The author's emphasis is on natural history, behavior, and ecology. Topics include geographical distributions, habitat preferences, territorial arrangements, activity rhythms, feeding techniques, defense mechanisms, and competition and cooperation among individuals of the same species. Much of the material is new, based on recent research in the field. Social reactions and organizations, and communication systems, are discussed in order to consider their implications for the evolution of primates in general and the development of languages and intelligence. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Latin Letters of C.S. Lewis (Paperback): C. S. Lewis, Don Giovanni Calabria, Mark A. Noll, Martin Moynihan Latin Letters of C.S. Lewis (Paperback)
C. S. Lewis, Don Giovanni Calabria, Mark A. Noll, Martin Moynihan
R426 Discovery Miles 4 260 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In September 1947, after reading C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters in Italian, Fr. (now St.) Giovanni Calabria was moved to write the author, but he knew no English and assumed (rightly) that Lewis knew no Italian. So he wrote his letter in Latin, hoping that, as a classicist, Lewis would know Latin. Therein began a correspondence that was to outlive Fr. Calabria himself (he died in December 1954, and was succeeded in correspondence by Fr. Luigi Pedrollo, which continued until Lewis’s own death in 1963).         Translator/editor Martin Moynihan calls these letters “limpid, fluent and deeply refreshing. There was a charm about them, too, and not least in the way they were ‘topped and tailed’ — that is, in their ever-slightly-varied formalities of address and of farewell.”  More than any other of his published works The Latin Letters shows the strong devotional side of Lewis, and contains letters ranging from Christian unity and modern European history to liturgical worship and general ethical behavior.        This new edition is greatly enhanced by a new foreword from the eminent Lewis Scholar, Mark A. Noll, from the University of Notre Dame.

Communication and Noncommunication by Cephalopods (Hardcover): Martin Moynihan Communication and Noncommunication by Cephalopods (Hardcover)
Martin Moynihan
R861 Discovery Miles 8 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Moynihan s book is not merely an attractive and readable descriptive synthesis, but an acute commentary on the development of current theory, opening new areas and refreshingly examining cherished models." W. John Smith, University of Pennsylvania

This book summarizes the state of our knowledge about communication in cephalopods, including squids, cuttlefishes, octopuses, and related forms, and assesses the comparative and theoretical implications of what we know."
