Matt Wilbur's journey as a marathon runner with Parkinson's
disease, is a spiritual journey as well as a physical one. His
journey has provided hope and inspiration to those with
Parkinson's. The marathon has given him a unique insight into the
lives of the invisible and marginalized members of our society, who
reside in the "back of the pack." He has used his story as a
platform to speak to thousands about walking in anticipation of
wonderful blessings coming into our lives despite our
circumstances.
This is a story of the journey of one average recreational runner,
the lessons he learned along the way and the impact running had on
his life. Matt Wilbur is the product of the "Running Boom" of the
late 1970s. He became a pretty good marathon runner with a personal
best of 2:59:40. But his running took on a new purpose in 2002 when
he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Matt uses his running,
not only to help himself stay "One Step Ahead of Parkinson's
Disease," but also to impact the lives of others. Matt is scheduled
to run his fourth consecutive New York City Marathon on November 4,
2012. He continues to run to raise funds for the Michael J. Fox
Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
