South China Sea (SCS) issues are complex and dynamic, ranging from historic claims to present day military occupation, from military security to regional stability, from rhetorical appeasements to national interests, from intraregional competition to extraregional involvement. The submissions made in 2009 by several Southeast Asian states to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) respecting outer limits of extended continental shelves beyond 200 nautical miles in the South China Sea resulted in renewed attention to the maritime disputes over the insular features and the waters of the South China Sea among several claimant States. Questions have resurfaced about the future of cooperation in the region. Furthermore, the improvement of cross-Strait relations between Taiwan and China after 2008 has added a new element to the evolution of South China Sea issues. This book describes these recent developments in depth and provides an examination of possible future developments in the South China Sea. The articles in this book were originally published as special sections in Ocean Development & International Law.

'Any respectable practitioner must follow the rules in making the truth - however skilfully camouflaged by lies - accessible to all'

It's the Fourth of July weekend at the prestigious West Heart country club. Gathered for cocktails on the first evening are just some of the guests: the club president, the treasurer and his pregnant wife, the snooping school boy, the bereaved father, the taciturn caretaker, the prospective member, the private detective...

And there will also be a body. And a fiendish mystery to solve.

But everything else is to play for. And you are about to find out that you have a role to play in this mystery too..

West Heart Kill is an outrageously original and imaginative murder mystery that is both a love letter to the greats of classic crime fiction and a brilliant puzzle the likes of which you will never have read before.

Public Speaking and Democratic Participation - Speech, Deliberation, and Analysis in the Civic Realm (Paperback): Abbott,... Public Speaking and Democratic Participation - Speech, Deliberation, and Analysis in the Civic Realm (Paperback)
Abbott, McDorman, Timmerman, Lamberton
R2,926 Discovery Miles 29 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A truly unique introductory textbook, Public Speaking and Democratic Participation: Speech, Deliberation, and Analysis in the Civic Realm provides a comprehensive introduction to the basic skills involved in public speaking--including reasoning, organization, outlining, anxiety management, style, delivery, and more--through the lens of democratic participation. It helps students develop the skills to distinguish between productive and unproductive public discourse; participate in and lead constructive discussions of community issues; and analyze public messages as an act of civic participation. By integrating the theme of civic engagement throughout, Public Speaking and Democratic Participation offers a direct and inspiring response to the alarming decline in civic participation in the U.S. and the climate of vindictiveness in our current political culture. It equips students with the tools to reverse these tendencies and move toward a greater commitment to our shared public life.

Salt Water Neighbors - International Ocean Law Relations Between the United States and Canada (Hardcover): Ted L McDorman Salt Water Neighbors - International Ocean Law Relations Between the United States and Canada (Hardcover)
Ted L McDorman
R3,687 Discovery Miles 36 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The United States and Canada are salt water neighbors on the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Despite the general closeness of the political, economic and social relationship, the two States have approached their offshore areas from different perspectives. Canada has long supported expansion of exclusive national control over its adjacent offshore; whereas the United States has been concerned with the balance between national authority and international navigation rights. Canada has tended to view maritime disputes with the United States as local matters; whereas the United States has tended to see the disputes with Canada in global terms.
Against this background, Salt Water Neighbor's examines both the international ocean law disagreements that exist between the United States and Canada respecting maritime boundaries, fisheries and navigation rights (e.g., the Northwest Passage) and the numerous cooperative bilateral arrangements that have prevented these disputes from being significant causes of friction between the neighbors. There has not been a comprehensive book-length study of United States-Canada international ocean relations since the early 1970s. Much has changed in the last 30 years. Most importantly, the law and the nature of the disputes between the two States have changed as a result of the adoption of 200 nautical mile zones in the late 1970s.

Presenting English Grammar - The English Instructor's Training and Reference Handbook (Paperback): Maria Antonia Ospina Presenting English Grammar - The English Instructor's Training and Reference Handbook (Paperback)
Maria Antonia Ospina; Richard E. McDorman
R712 Discovery Miles 7 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The primary goal of this handbook is to familiarize adult English as a second language (adult ESL) instructors with the most important grammatical concepts and difficulties encountered by students in and out of the classroom while providing both novice and experienced instructors with the tools necessary to exemplify and explain, when necessary, such concepts in a clear and effective manner. By carefully reviewing the examples, explanations, and notes contained in this handbook, instructors will learn to employ the "natural" method (sometimes also referred to as the "direct" method) in their presentations of several of the most essential points of English grammar. While this handbook is not intended to provide an exhaustive review of English grammar, it does aim to address the most common sources of grammatical difficulty encountered by teachers and students in typical adult ESL settings. The examples presented throughout this handbook use Standard American English and cover a wide range of grammatical concepts at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced proficiency levels. This handbook emphasizes practical grammatical concepts, that is, issues mainly involving English morphology and syntax, along with some important lexical points. Upon completing their review of the material presented in this handbook, ESL instructors should be able to apply the natural method to their presentations of the most fundamental grammatical topics encountered in the classroom, across the proficiency levels and independent of theme-specific lesson content. Although this handbook does not presuppose any specific linguistic training on the part of the reader and technical linguistic jargon has been intentionally kept to a minimum, some basic linguistic terminology has been used out of necessity given the content of this work. Readers who are unfamiliar with basic linguistic concepts (such as morphology, syntax, lexicon, aspect, grammaticality, etc.) should be able to consult standard reference materials in order to resolve their uncertainties with a minimum of difficulty. The author has developed and revised this handbook over the course of many years of training novice and experienced instructors to teach a broad range of ESL curricula (including general, academic, and business English at all proficiency levels) to adult learners in diverse educational settings and instructional formats (such as private, one-on-one tutorials and multi-level intensive English programs taught in small and medium-sized groups). Each grammatical concept presented in this handbook is accompanied by numerous examples of realistic usage to aid the reader in understanding those concepts and to assist the instructor with his or her presentation of those grammatical concepts in the classroom. Finally, the reader should keep in mind that this handbook is practical rather than theoretical in nature and has been specifically designed to serve as a useful addition to the ESL instructor's professional "tool kit." It is the author's hope that the reader will find this handbook to be easily approachable and highly relevant to the issues encountered during his or her daily instructional responsibilities.

Canada's Offshore - Jurisdiction, Rights and Management (Paperback, 3rd Revised ed.): Bruce Calderbank, Alec M. MacLeod,... Canada's Offshore - Jurisdiction, Rights and Management (Paperback, 3rd Revised ed.)
Bruce Calderbank, Alec M. MacLeod, Ted L McDorman, David H. Gray
R989 Discovery Miles 9 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The last few years have seen major changes to the laws governing the offshore, created by international agreements, Canadian legislation, and court decisions. This is the first Canadian book to deal comprehensively and systematically with these important issues pertaining to the jurisdiction, rights, and management in Canada's offshore. Produced by the Association of Canada Lands Surveyors (ACLS) and the Canadian Hydrographic Association (CHA), it will be a useful reference for years to come.
This book covers the following:
- International practices, customs, laws, and treaties concerning the oceans, and their effects on Canada.
-Canada's responses to international ocean-related events through Canadian legislation, regulations and practices.
-International treaties and conventions, Canadian court decisions, and the result of arbitration decisions concerning Canada, with specific emphasis on the resulting ocean boundary delimitations.
-The mechanics of describing and determining ocean boundaries, and interpreting ocean-related Canadian legislation.
-Practical issues related to Canada's offshore oil and gas industry.
If you have a question about Canada's offshore, or about international or Canadian laws and legislation concerning the offshore, then you should start your search here. If this book does not contain the full answer you seek, then it will direct you to other relevant resources. Most importantly, this book supplies the context and relationships that are vital to getting the most out of this information.
On 7 November 2003, Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982, which, among other things, established thebasis for national interests and sovereign rights beyond the traditional 3 nautical mile territorial sea. Through the 1997 Oceans Act, Canada has also consolidated various pieces of legislation to provide a more cohesive statement on Canada's offshore interests, including the juridical continental shelf beyond the 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone. In the 2005 Canada's Oceans Action Plan, Canada has further identified issues such as sovereignty, integrated ocean management, and health of the oceans as priorities, and identified ocean science and technology as one of the tools to meet these priorities.
When discussing Canadian issues, the material is organised from the Pacific Coast, to the Atlantic Coast and then to the Arctic Coast. The book features over 64 colour figures explaining international law of the sea issues and Canada's offshore. Extensive footnotes have been included to provide references and further information. The Glossary and Appendices will further aid the reader. A detailed Bibliography is included.
All of the Figures are available in colour via the ACLS web site http: //www.acls-aatc.ca
