Destructive Coordination, Anfal and Islamic Political Capitalism - A New Reading of Contemporary Iran (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Destructive Coordination, Anfal and Islamic Political Capitalism - A New Reading of Contemporary Iran (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Mehrdad Vahabi
R3,327 Discovery Miles 33 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book introduces a new theoretical framework that examines Iran in relation to the theological concept of Anfal, a confiscatory regime seen in Iran since 1979 where public assets belong to the leader of Iran. Through analysing the economic impacts of Anfal, the effects of political capitalism and destructive coordination and how they lead to the economics of hoarding and the flight of capital and labour are highlighted. The economics of predation, ecological disaster, and cooperative coordination are also discussed. This book aims to highlight the economic consequences of Anfal and its role in sustaining destructive condition and shaping the Islamic political capitalism. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in the political economy, Middle Eastern and Islamic studies.

The Political Economy of Predation - Manhunting and the Economics of Escape (Hardcover): Mehrdad Vahabi The Political Economy of Predation - Manhunting and the Economics of Escape (Hardcover)
Mehrdad Vahabi
R3,072 Discovery Miles 30 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Still in the early stages of development, conflict theory presents a growing interest in understanding the economic costs and benefits of conflicts. In this book, Mehrdad Vahabi analyses one type of conflict in particular: manhunting, or predation, in which a dominant power hunts down its prey and the goal of the prey is to escape and thus survive. This contrasts with traditional warfare, in which two (or more) powers enter into a conflict and the goal is to fight to win domination. The economics of escape casts light on costs and benefits of predatory activities, and explores the impact of violence as an impediment to developing countries with respect to assets structure. This book is unprecedented in its research and thought, and develops a new theory of predation in economics that makes a significant contribution to the field.

The Political Economy of Destructive Power (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Mehrdad Vahabi The Political Economy of Destructive Power (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Mehrdad Vahabi
R3,300 Discovery Miles 33 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Economic science has extensively studied the creative power of individuals and social groups, but it has largely ignored the destructive power of economic agents. This highly original book redresses the balance and, for the first time, looks at how much an agent can destroy. Destructive power is conceptualised in a unique way, covering all types of deliberate (violent and non-violent) social conflict behaviour. The theoretical arguments in the book are skilfully linked to burning political issues of our time such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the Second Gulf War. The author embraces destructive power in its two different functions, namely appropriative and rule-producing, the latter having been entirely neglected in classical and neo-classical approaches. The focus of the book is to integrate both these functions of destructive power into the political economy discourse. In doing so, the author offers an original interpretation of social development in terms of a combination of three different types of power: creative (economic), destructive and moral. Destructive power is therefore studied within the scope of collective action and not just as an irrational, abnormal or critical reaction. Throughout the book, the author illustrates many relevant and thought-provoking examples of man's destructive nature including civil war, military confrontation, guerrilla warfare, terrorism, revolution, strikes, sovereignty, public security and suicide. This fascinating book offers a challenging new agenda for understanding conflict theory and measuring the 'value' of destructive power. It will appeal to a broad and varied readership from a range of disciplines across the social sciences including economics, politics, sociology, history and psychology.
