Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has emerged as
the standard first-line treatment for insomnia. The number of
patients receiving non-medication treatments is increasing, and
there is a growing need to address a wide range of patient
backgrounds, characteristics, and medical and psychiatric
comorbidities. Adapting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia
identifies for clinicians how best to deliver and/or modify CBT-I
based on the needs of their patients. The book recommends treatment
modifications based on patient age, comorbid conditions, and for
various special populations.
The relationship between sleep and both mental and physical
performance in athletes has become a key issue over the past
several years. Sleep and Athletes: Physical Performance, Mental
Performance, Injury Prevention, and Competitive Advantage for
Athletes, Coaches, and Trainers aims to synthesize the growing
scientific evidence in this area to help researchers, clinicians,
and others interested in sport to understand the fundamentals of
sleep health and how these factors relate to athletes. Serving as
an important bridge between the sleep and athletics field, the book
educates sleep professionals about how their field of expertise
relates to various aspects of athletics, whilst educate sports
professionals about the basics of sleep and how it relates to their
field of expertise. This is accomplished by explaining some of the
basics of sleep health; reviewing the literature on sleep
disorders, treatments, risk factors for athletes; discussing ways
that sleep health impacts physical and mental performance; and
addressing key specific areas where these fields overlap. In all
cases, this text will draw from the existing peer-reviewed
literature, in order to provide evidence-based guidance that is
objective and well-explained.
Sleep and Health provides an accessible yet comprehensive overview
of the relationship between sleep and health at the individual,
community and population levels, as well as a discussion of the
implications for public health, public policy and interventions.
Based on a firm foundation in many areas of sleep health research,
this text further provides introductions to each sub-area of the
field and a summary of the current research for each area. This
book serves as a resource for those interested in learning about
the growing field of sleep health research, including sections on
social determinants, cardiovascular disease, cognitive functioning,
health behavior theory, smoking, and more.
