The Routledge Handbook of Corpus Linguistics 2e provides an updated
overview of a dynamic and rapidly growing area with a widely
applied methodology. Over a decade on from the first edition of the
Handbook, this collection of 47 chapters from experts in key areas
offers a comprehensive introduction to both the development and use
of corpora as well as their ever-evolving applications to other
areas, such as digital humanities, sociolinguistics, stylistics,
translation studies, materials design, language teaching and
teacher development, media discourse, discourse analysis, forensic
linguistics, second language acquisition and testing. The new
edition updates all core chapters and includes new chapters on
corpus linguistics and statistics, digital humanities, translation,
phonetics and phonology, second language acquisition, social media
and theoretical perspectives. Chapters provide annotated further
reading lists and step-by-step guides as well as detailed overviews
across a wide range of themes. The Handbook also includes a wealth
of case studies that draw on some of the many new corpora and
corpus tools that have emerged in the last decade. Organised across
four themes, moving from the basic start-up topics such as corpus
building and design to analysis, application and reflection, this
second edition remains a crucial point of reference for advanced
undergraduates, postgraduates and scholars in applied linguistics.
Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging is one of several new
experimental tech niques which have rec{, tly been applied to food
systems. NMR in general and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging are
powerful probes of the microscopic and macroscopic changes
occurring in foods during processing, storage and utilization. The
training that food scientists and food engineers have received in
the past has often omitted specific courses in physical chemistry
that form the theoretical and practical foundation necessary to
fully utilized magnetic resonance experimental techniques. The goal
of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Foods is to introduce food scien
tists and food engineers to magnetic resonance imaging and provide
a basis for further study. As such the book begins with two
chapters of an introductory nature. The first chapter introduces
magnetic resonance phenomena, NMR in general, and MRI in detail.
Particular emphasis is given to the limitations and typical ranges
available for studying particular phenomena, for example, the range
of diffusivities that can be studied using commercial grade NMR
equipment. Chapter 2 gives a brief introduction to the classical
physical model of NMR first introduced by Felix Bloch in 1946 and
aspects important to the interpretation of MRI data. This chapter
is provided for the researchers and students interested in more
details of the basic theory. Chapter 2 can be skipped by those
individuals not requiring more information on the basic theory of
NMR. The next several chapters of the book are on applications of
MRI to food systems."

Historical fiction; family saga. A two volume book covering the
lives of James Winship and his children in England and Ireland
during the turbulent struggle for Irish independence, from 1852 to
1923. In Volume I, James Winship's life is chronicled from his
early days, as an adopted Irish-born son of an Anglo-Irish lord in
County Cork, Ireland, to his steady rise as a decorated war hero in
British India and, ultimately, his succession to Charles Stewart
Parnell, as leader of the Irish party in the House of Commons in
the late 1890s. Volume II covers the life of his children: his son
in British India and World War I, and his daughter in New York
City, England, and Ireland. Volume I was first published in 1995
but was rewritten by the author in 2012. Volume II will be
available in spring 2013.
This research paper explores the history of US security cooperation
programs in Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tajikistan,
Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, from 1993 to the present, identifying
five distinct phases of development as those programs sought to
achieve US objectives in denuclearization and proliferation
prevention, democratization and military reform, regional
cooperation, and improving military capabilities. The author
elaborates on the limiting factors, successes, and a failure
associated with those efforts and then makes recommendations for
the future of US security cooperation in Central Asia in the
future.
Against the backdrop of the Irish independence movement, Book
Three, Independence, the final book in the trilogy, The Winship
Family, continues the lives of James and Emily Winship, Cornelia,
now Viscountess Leadon, William and Anne Winship, Brendan and Sean
Kenny, and Wilton and Ivor Sudbury. Book Three finishes with the
drama surrounding the 1921 treaty between Great Britain and
Ireland, the ensuing Irish civil war, the murder of Michael
Collins, and the death, in 1938, of James Winship. Included in this
book are British parliamentary leaders, Winston Churchill, David
Lloyd George, H.H. Asquith, and Irish political leaders Eamon de
Valera, Michael Collins, John Redmond, and John Dillon.
Against the backdrop of the Irish independence movement, Book Two
of the three-volume family saga, The Winship Family, continues the
lives of James Winship and his two children, William and Cornelia,
and the scheming Marquess of Gortin and his revenge-laden Sudbury
family. James recovers from another family tragedy, returns to the
political arena, rising to a cabinet position in the British
Liberal party, and enters into an affair with the fashionable
political hostess, Lady Emily Winslowe; William becomes a a British
Indian army officer, battling tribesmen and a trumped-up court
martial; Cornelia encounters life-changing complications as a
glittering debutante in a dramatic London Social Season; and the
Sudburys, grandfather, father, and son, together weave webs of
harmful intrigue against the Winships. Included in this Anglo-Irish
historical novel are actual parliamentary leaders, like Winston
Churchill, David Lloyd George, H.H.Asquith, Arthur Balfour, and the
Irish party leaders John Dillon and Timothy Healy.
