Research into child language development is being conducted more
extensively, by more people, and in more countries throughout the
world than at any point in the past. We now know more than we ever
did before about the linguistic, cognitive, neurobio logical, and
social capacities that children bring to their language learning
task, as well as the ways in which these capacities interact with a
whole range of factors present in the child's environment
throughout the learning process, not least the particular character
istics of the language or languages to which the child is exposed.
Far from inducing a sense of complacency, this new knowledge seems
instead to create an even stronger impetus to know more. This is
partly because of the new and unforeseen questions it raises and
partly because of competition between different theories to provide
the best explanation of the phenomenon, and which in turn engender
different methods of enquiry. This volume addresses many of the key
issues which are currently exercising the minds of child language
researchers, and which are likely to motivate research for some
years to come. The chapters included here-all previously
unpublished-present a great deal of new data and address a range of
theoretical issues from a variety of perspectives."
Pragmatics - the way we communicate using more than just language -
is particularly problematic for people with speech disorders.
Through an extensive analysis of how pragmatics can go wrong, this
2007 book not only provides a clinically useful account of
pragmatic impairment, but it also throws light on how pragmatics
functions in healthy individuals. Michael Perkins brings mainstream
and clinical pragmatics together by showing that not only can our
understanding of pragmatics be aided by the study of pragmatic
impairment, but that clinical and theoretical pragmatics are better
served by treating pragmatic ability and disability within a single
framework. It is a comprehensive book aimed primarily at linguists
and psycholinguists rather than clinicians, and includes
illustrative material on conditions such as autism and aphasia and
a wide range of other communication disorders in both children and
adults.

True Life and Death Stories of Hawaii's Hidden Dangers--with Advice
From Rescue Experts on How to Enjoy the Islands Safely.
This series of step-by-step guides acquaints amateur digital
photographers with the full spectrum of techniques and technology
they need to attain the professional edge in digital imaging. The
manuals offer a clear, no-nonsense approach to teaching basic
skills, such as understanding the basic functions of the digital
camera and how to arrange a photograph artistically, while more
experienced photographers will profit from the guides that focus on
complex issues, including effective posing and lighting strategies,
color and image balancing methods, and design techniques for
perfecting the digital image in Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Amateur photographers will learn to utilize the essential software
behind breathtaking digital photography in this comprehensive guide
to fabricating the perfect image. Designed to avoid technical
jargon and complicated processes, this beginner's manual presents
each tool and feature of Adobe Photoshop Elements in short,
easy-to-digest lessons that facilitate rapid learning. Every phase
of the printing process is covered, including how to use light
correctly, sharpen images that are not quite focused, remove dust
and scratches from scanned photos, eliminate red-eye, and crop and
resize images. Pairing concise text with screen shots for every
step, this handbook makes it easy to get started quickly and begin
making images look their best.
Appropriate for both professional and amateur photographers, this
guide approaches Adobe Photoshop from the technical and artistic
standpoint of traditional photography. Rather than emphasizing how
to distort or create unusual or outlandish digital effects, it
explores the use of Photoshop to achieve very realistic
photographic images. In-depth instruction illustrates how to
duplicate traditional photography and darkroom effects and
techniques and how to use alternative films, specialized filters,
lenses, and camera accessories. Every technique is demonstrated
step-by-step so that photographers can easily follow and duplicate
the effects with their own work. Although not a beginner's manual,
this book is appropriate for all other users of Adobe Photoshop.
