Humanwissenschaften bilden die Grundlage der kultur-zivilisatorischen UEberlieferung der heutigen Welt. Es scheint aber, dass die gesellschaftlich-oekonomische Entwicklung und der techno-wissenschaftliche Fortschritt sie, global betrachtet, an den Rand des gesellschaftlichen Geschehens geruckt und ihre Rolle in Bildung, Kultur und Forschung ins Wanken gebracht hatten. In der Auseinandersetzung mit den aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Krisen, die unser Verstandnis der Freiheit und Gerechtigkeit beruhren, setzt sich erneut das Bewusstsein uber die Bedeutung der humanistischen UEberlieferung fur die Akzeptanz und den Aufbau einer gemeinsamen Zukunft durch wie auch fur die Anerkennung der Unterschiedlichkeit der Welt und der Wurde eines jeden Einzelnen. Die Bedeutung und die Perspektiven der Humanwissenschaften heute werden von 22 Autorinnen und Autoren in diesem Sammelband des Forums fur Humanwissenschaften eroertert. The humanities represent the foundation of the cultural-civilizatory heritage of contemporary world. However, it seems that the socio-economic development and techno-scientific progress have on a global level forced them to the margins of society, and weakened their role in education, culture, and research. The confrontation with current social crises, which have affected our understanding of freedom and justice, motivates a renewed awareness of the importance of humanistic tradition for the acceptance and creation of a common future, as well as for the recognition of diversity of the world and dignity of the individual. Contributions by 22 authors in the collective volume of the Forum for the Humanities discuss the significance and perspectives of the humanities today.

This book-series, initiated in 1992, has an interdisciplinary orientation; it is published in English and German and comprises research monographs, collections of essays and editions of source texts dealing with German-Jewish literary and cultural history, in particular from the period covering the 18th to 20th centuries. The closer definition of the term German-Jewish applied to literature and culture is an integral part of its historical development. Primarily, the decisive factor is that from the middle of the 18th century German gradually became the language of choice for Jews, and Jewish authors started writing in German, rather than Yiddish or Hebrew, even when they were articulating Jewish themes. This process is directly connected an historical change in mentality and social factors which led to a gradual opening towards a non-Jewish environment, which in its turn was becoming more open. In the Enlightenment, German society becomes the standard of reference - initially for an intellectual elite. Against this background, the term German-Jewish literature refers to the literary work of Jewish authors writing in German to the extent that explicit or implicit Jewish themes, motifs, modes of thought or models can be identified in them. From the beginning of the 19th century at the latest, however, the image of Jews in the work of non-Jewish writers, determined mainly by anti-Semitism, becomes a factor in German-Jewish literature. There is a tension between Jewish writers' authentic reference to Jewish traditions or existence and the anti-Semitic marking and discrimination against everything Jewish which determines the overall development of the history of German-Jewish literature and culture. This series provides an appropriate forum for research into the whole problematic area.

Die Beitrage im vorliegenden Band enthalten Fallbeispiele aus der Geschichtswissenschaft, der Literaturwissenschaft und der Volkskunde, die sich alle mit dem Thema "Provinz" befassen. Der vielschichtige Prozess der Modernisierung im langen 19. Jahrhundert hat die "grosse" und die vielen "kleinen" Welten starker aneinander rucken lassen. Daraus erwuchsen gleichermassen Wachstum und Stagnation, Optimismus und Pessimismus, Nachahmung und Originalitat, Individualisierung und Kollektivierung - Phanomene, die alle auf eine Weise mit dem Begriff Provinz verknupfbar sind. Die Beispiele beziehen sich auf den slowenischen, oesterreichischen, ungarischen, slowakischen und siebenburgischen Raum und laden zur Diskussion auf breiterer Ebene ein.
