This book addresses a critical public health problem in America -
the leading preventable cause of birth defects, neurodevelopmental
disorders and intellectual disability: prenatal alcohol exposure.
Dr. Rich provides insight into the prevalence of neurodevelopmental
disorder associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (ND-PAE) among
juveniles accused of violent crimes, in neighborhoods where
America's "least valued" citizens reside, and even in upper middle
class communities. The problem develops as early as the first three
weeks of pregnancy, when many women are unaware that they are
pregnant. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, affected
individuals can avoid a lifetime of lost potential from substance
use disorders, incarceration, unemployment, and homelessness. From
her broad psychiatric, forensic, and public health experience, Dr.
Rich has crafted a reasoned, passionate argument for communities
and professionals to unite in ending an epidemic that currently
affects one in twenty American children.
About the Book
The Downwind Walk lets you experience the tragic events
following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New
York on September 11, 2001 through the eyes of an Urban Search and
Rescue (USAR) paramedic who went into harm's way to rescue the
victims, which rapidly included many of his "brothers" and
"sisters" of the New York Fire Department (NYFD) and Emergency
Medical Services (EMS).
The author was a member of the EMS FDNY in the Bronx who was
deployed with the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA)
USAR team at Ground Zero. He went downwind with the USAR team after
they set up operations and donned the proper protective clothing
and breathing protection. Their mission was to take a first hand
look at that mass casualty incident (MCI), assess the damage and
losses, and make an estimation of resources needed to mitigate the
incident. The reader is invited to take the downwind walk with
Steve as he recounts the events, sights, smells and vivid memories
of that unforgettable September ..... from eye level at Ground
Zero, in his dusty boots.
In this book, you will read stories about EMTs and paramedics
who were at Ground Zero with the author, including some who were
wounded or traumatized and others who made the "ultimate
sacrifice." You will also learn about NYFD EMS personnel who made a
significant contribution to patient care and public service by
responding to numerous 9-1-1 calls or assisting fallen coworkers
that week despite extremely stressful working conditions.
No doubt you have heard the popular stories that tell of heroism
on airline flights, in the Twin Towers and at the Pentagon. It is
also important for future generations of Americans to know about
the sacrifice and dedication of NYFD EMS first responders. Now is
the time to share their stories as the 10th Anniversary of 9/11
looms on the horizon as ominously as the smoke and dust filled the
atmosphere after the collapse of the Twin Towers.
Steve wants future EMTs and paramedics to know about the
individual acts of caring and dedication of the EMS first
responders at Ground Zero. He also would like to share with them
stories of how EMS dealt with this horrendous incident and lessons
learned from the catastrophic consequences of that MCI so they may
learn from their experience.
Surgery is no longer necessary for many injuries, ailments, and
conditions for which it used to be the only option. It is invasive
and unpredictable, and recuperation is often slow and painful.
Surgery does not guarantee healing and can leave patients
vulnerable to serious infections. The bottom line is that the
natural healing mechanisms of the body are responsible for
repairing and mending any injury or condition.
From shoulders to ankles, Dr. Lazar's patients have experienced
firsthand the incredible healing power of the combination of modern
medicine and the body's natural healing processes. More than one
thousand of his patients have benefited from platelet-rich plasma
therapy, where a patient's platelets are extracted from their blood
and when necessary combined with stem cells from their abdominal
fat or bone marrow, and re-injected into the injured site.
The results of the platelet-rich plasma treatments speak for
themselves: baseball pitchers are back on the mound a few weeks
after being benched with shoulder injuries. Tennis players
sidelined with tennis elbow are able to again hit shots without
pain. Everyday people suffering from debilitating knee pain are now
walking with ease.
People everywhere, in all walks of life, are gaining full
mobility and improved quality of life faster-without surgery.
In this book, "All Medicines are Poison ," Melvin H. Kirschner,
MPH, MD, sets out to remove the fog of confusion that clouds the
landscape patients are required to navigate in their search for
health care today. This book describes the risks and benefits
associated with the use of medicines, and explores the validity of
other treatment modalities referred to as "Complimentary and
Alternative Medicine (CAM). He discusses the numerous failings and
backroom dealings in the pharmaceutical and insurance industries,
and highlights possible solutions to many of these current
concerns.Dr. Kirschner has had an extensive career in the
healthcare field. He has championed patient's rights throughout his
career. As one of the key physicians instrumental in the enactment
of the first biomedical ethical guidelines in the world, he has
always strived for close doctor/patient relationships where the
patient's concerns always come first.
Over the past several years, STD/HIV infections have affected
millions of people throughout the world. These infections do not
discriminate against the wealthy or the poor, but afflict many
simply because they are not informed about the diseases and their
prevention, in denial or refuse to protect themselves.
Dr. Samuel Frimpong draws upon his extensive experience as a
CDC certified STD/HIV disease intervention specialist and Human
Services Program Specialist for HIV/AIDS to provide a practical
guidebook to assist youth, young adults, and adults in protecting
themselves from STD/HIV infections and the associated
complications. He encourages others to increase their knowledge
about sexually transmitted diseases and then talk openly and
honestly to sex partners, together formulating a STD/HIV prevention
action plan. Dr. Frimpong combines global scientific literature,
statistics, and field experience in the community while describing
the Effects of STDs on male and female reproductive systems
Behavior modification and treatments for sex partners Symptoms and
treatment of STD/HIV Socioeconomic burden of the HIV epidemic
around the world STD/HIV Prevention Action provides the necessary
facts and a viable plan for avoiding sexually transmitted disease
for those ready to change behaviors and take charge of their future
health today.
Clinical Neurology of Aging, Third Edition continues the tradition
of the First (1984) and Second (1994) editions with 60 chapters
written by the world's elite clinicians from neurology, geriatrics
and research on all aspects of geriatric neurology. Aging does not
automatically imply decline. Many older people find joy in their
friendships and their willingness to look at the world with a
calmer view than they may have had in youth. This clinically
focused book is designed to help clinicians help older persons
maintain that joy. Now divided into 9 comprehensive sections, the
Third Edition contains subjects ranging from geriatric assessment
to pain management and palliative care. Specific sections include:
Introduction to Geriatric Neurology; Neurological Assessment in
Aging; Cognitive Disorders in Aging; Motor Disorders in Aging;
Neuropsychiatric Illness in Aging; Sensory Disturbance in Aging;
Peripheral Neurology of Aging; Disease States in Elderly; and
Neurological Therapeutics. With a deft touch, the editors - Drs.
Martin Albert and Janice Knoefel - have incorporated the geriatric
care perspective and a quality-oriented approach to health care
throughout the volume. The result: the definitive reference, useful
for all clinicians caring for older people and informative to those
who set policies that affect research and clinical practice.
