This is the first book ever to examine the architecture and
urbanism of the Persian Gulf as a complete entity, dealing equally
with conditions on the eastern Iranian shoreline as in Arabic
countries on the western side. By inviting a range of architects
and scholars to write about historical and contemporary influences
on 14 cities along both Gulf coastlines, the book traces the
changes in architecture and human settlement in relation to
environmental factors and particularity of place. It provides an
innovative contribution to the study of architecture and
globalisation through a detailed investigation of this particular
region, investigating how buildings and cities are being shaped as
a result. A set of thematic essays at the end offer important
insights into issues of globalisation, urbanism and environmental
design, drawing from the experience of the Persian Gulf. The
outcome is a unique record of the Gulf in the early-21st century at
a point when global capitalism is making major inroads and yet
questions of architectural design, climate change, ecological
sustainability, cultural identity and so-called 'Facebook
Democracy' are likewise shaking up the Middle Eastern region. The
book thus offers a fresh reading of the architecture and urbanism
of a fascinating and often contradictory region, while also showing
how globalisation can be analysed in a more engaged and integrated
manner.

With particular reference to the field of architecture, this text
examines the economic and political consequences for Britain of the
post-war Anglo-American 'special relationship', providing detailed
studies of key buildings and urban planning initiatives, blended
with a wider theoretical analysis of socio-economic and cultural
developments. By looking at the effects on a highly developed
Western country of a more powerful ally on which it was becoming
increasingly dependent, the book critically revisits the usual
themes of post-colonial studies, making this a thought-provoking
and innovative analysis.
Critical Architecture examines the relationship between critical
practice in architecture and architectural criticism. Placing
architecture in an interdisciplinary context, the book explores
architectural criticism with reference to modes of criticism in
other disciplines - specifically art criticism - and considers how
critical practice in architecture operates through a number of
different modes: buildings, drawings and texts. With forty essays
by an international cast of leading architectural academics, this
accessible single source text on the topical subject of
architectural criticism is ideal for undergraduate as well as post
graduate study.
What is the role of design research in the types of insight and
knowledge that architects create? That is the central question
raised by this book. It acts as the introductory overview for
Ashgate's major new series, 'Design Research in Architecture' which
has been created in order to establish a firm basis for this
emerging field of investigation within architecture. While there
have been numerous architects-scholars since the Renaissance who
have relied upon the interplay of drawings, models, textual
analysis, intellectual ideas and cultural insights to scrutinise
the discipline, nonetheless, until recently, there has been a
reluctance within architectural culture to acknowledge and accept
the role of design research as part of the discourse. However, in
many countries around the world, one of the key changes in
architecture and architectural education over the last decade has
been the acceptance of design as a legitimate research area in its
own right and this new series provides a forum where the best
proponents of architectural design research can publish their work.
This volume provides a broad overview on design research that
supports and amplifies the different volumes coming out in the book
series. It brings together leading architects and academics to
discuss the more general issues involved in design research. At the
end, there is an Indicative Bibliography which alludes to a long
history of architectural books which can be seen as being in the
spirit of design research.

"A major monument in the writing of worldwide history" - Book of
the Week, Times Higher Education Winner of the Colvin Prize 2020
(Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain) 2020
Dartmouth Medal Honorable Mention Sir Banister Fletcher's Global
History of Architecture is the acknowledged classic reference work
for architectural history. It has been essential reading for
generations of architects and students since the first edition was
published in 1896 - and this tradition continues today as the new
21st edition provides the most up-to-date, authoritative and
detailed account of the global history of architecture available in
any form. Thousands of major buildings from around the world are
described and explained, accompanied by over 2,200 photographs,
plans, and drawings. Architectural styles and traditions are placed
within a clear framework, and the chronological and geographical
arrangement of the work's 102 chapters allows for easy comparative
analysis of cultural contexts, resources, and technologies.
Published for the first time in full colour, and entirely rewritten
throughout by over 80 leading international architectural
historians, this is a landmark new edition of a classic work - one
which reflects the very latest scholarship and brings a thoroughly
contemporary understanding to over 5,500 years of global
architectural history. Produced in partnership with the RIBA and
the University of London, the new edition of Sir Banister
Fletcher's Global History of Architecture is available both as
printed edition, and for the first time as part of a
fully-searchable and interactive digital library available to
institutions by annual subscription or on perpetual access (see
www.bloomsburyarchitecturelibrary.com).
