The field has left behind its status as an interdiscipline between sociology and linguistics and is now a worldwide established field. Sociolinguistics continues to contribute to solving practical problems in areas such as language planning and standardization, language policy, as well as in language didactics and speech therapy. Moreover, new topics and areas of application have arisen from the autonomy of the discipline - these have been systematically and extensively included in the second edition of the handbook. The book is a systematic and presentation of the theoretical, methodological and terminological fundamentals of modern sociolinguistics and an overview of the history of the discipline in its present-day form. Against the backdrop of the latest research it uses an abundance of examples to illustrate and explain sociolinguistic concepts (e.g language community, diglossia, status and function of languages) and the basic terms used in the study of language varieties (e.g. standard, dialect, sociolect, register, style). The exercises are designed to monitor learning progress and can be used by individuals or in seminars.

Dieser Sammelband vereint die Beitrage einer Ringvorlesung, die am Arbeitsbereich "Deutsch als Fremdsprache" des Fachbereichs Germanistik der Freien Universitat stattfand. Die Zusammenstellung der Beitrage hatte zum Ziel, aktuelle Themen und Tendenzen im Bereich Deutsch als Zweit- und Fremdsprache zur Diskussion zu stellen. Die Beitrage von Wissenschaftlern verschiedener Universitaten innerhalb und ausserhalb Berlins zeigen, wie vielfaltig Methoden und Perspektiven fur das Fach Deutsch als Zweit- und Fremdsprache sein koennen. Die einzelnen Beitrage bilden thematische Bloecke, die sich verschiedenen Teildisziplinen widmen. Diskutiert werden u.a. Fragen der Grammatik, neuere Entwicklungen der Spracherwerbsforschung und Fachsprachenforschung sowie Kanonfragen der Literaturwissenschaft.
