Norman J. Heard
R1,744 Discovery Miles 17 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Now in Paperback! The relationship between North American Indians and Europeans, friendly at first, took a violent turn with the kidnapping of natives by mariners, and conflict flared as the frontier line moved north from Mexico and west from the Atlantic coast settlements. Heard presents brief articles in dictionary arrangement about Indian tribes and leaders, explorers, missionaries, traders, settlers, soldiers, battles, treaties, and other topics in the frontier history of the present U.S. from the arrival of the first seafarers to the end of the Indian wars. The work is divided regionally. Vol.I, published in 1987, related events in the Southeastern Woodlands. Vol.II, published in 1990, is devoted to the Northeastern Woodlands. Vol.III covers the Great Plains. Vol. IV will describe events in the Far West. The final volume will include a general index, bibliography, and chronology. Cloth edition [0-8108-2767-0] published in 1993.

The Handbook of the American Frontier seeks to bridge the gap between studies of indigenous Americans and those of settlers of European or African descent. Heard bridges this fissure in scholarship of nearly 5 centuries of history by using Native American-white interaction as a guide. He provides a unique perspective on the implications of American settlement and the interaction of numerous cultures throught the history of North America. The study has emphasized the careers of prominent frontier participants, and has presented articles on individuals and events that had a significant impact upon the shifting dynamics of frontier settlement and expansion. The Handbook contains hundreds of sources, both primary and secondary, and seeks to foreground the perspective of heretofore largely ignored groups such as women and blacks, and frequently misrepresented cultures of native North Americans. This fifth and final volume of the Handbook of the American Frontier consists of a detailed chronology beginning in 1513 and running through 1918 of significant meetings between Native Americans and settlers on the frontier, a list of books consulted during preparation of the five volume work, and a complete index of the first four volumes including thousands of names and hundreds of subjects of interest.

The projected five volume Handbook of the American Frontier is intended as a work of first reference that provides insights into Indian-white relationships during the first four centuries of our colonial and United States history. Based upon both primary and secondary sources, it includes the Indian viewpoint as well as the white, and provides references to assist the reader to additional information. Volume IV of the Handbook is an account of men and events important in the frontier history of the West from the earliest Spanish explorations to the last Indian battle, fought in 1918. Like previous volumes, it is presented as an historical dictionary with entries relating to the experiences of Indian leaders and tribes, traders, explorers, missionaries, mountain men, military officers, and frontier settlers. Much attention is devoted to warfare, treaties, and alliances between European and Native American Nations. Tribes featured include the Apaches, Navahos, Pueblos, Utes, Paiutes, Shoshonis, Modocs, Yumas, and the proliferation of native peoples inhabiting the Pacific Coast from Mexico to Canada. The other regional volumes cover events and peoples in the Southwest Woodlands, the Northeastern Woodlands, and the Great Plains. The final volume of the set will include a general index, bibliography and chronology.
