All aspects of the concept of collocation - the phenomenon whereby
words naturally tend to occur in the company of a restricted set of
other words - are covered in this book. It deals in detail with the
history of the word collocation, the concepts associated with it
and its use in a linguistic context. The authors show the practical
means by which the collocational behavior of words can be explored
using illustrative computer programs and examine applications in
teaching, lexicography and natural language processing that use
collocation in formation. The book investigates the place that
collocation occupies in theories of language and provides a
thoroughly comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the current
position of collocation in language studies and applied
linguistics.
Teacher Preparation explores and examines current topics and issues
in teacher education through the lens of eight practicing teachers.
Their voices add a new perspective on the effectiveness and
practicality of current trends and reforms in teacher education.
Their insights may help to better prepare the next generation of
teachers for success and longevity in the classroom. While most
teachers rate their own experience as positive, many are not
satisfied with the effectiveness of current pre-service teacher
education programs as a whole. In fact, less than half of the
teachers surveyed by the author were mostly or very satisfied with
current pre-service teacher education. This book explains why so
many teachers are unsatisfied. In their own words, the teachers
explain the thoughts and reasoning behind the views expressed
throughout the book. Although teachers offer both praises and
critiques of teacher education, the overall message is one of
collaboration and partnership.

The development of a brain from its simple beginnings in the embryo
to the extraordinarily complex fully-functional adult structure is
a truly remarkable process. Understanding how it occurs remains a
formidable challenge despite enormous advances over the last
century and current intense world-wide scientific research. A
greater knowledge of how nervous systems construct themselves will
bring huge benefits for human health and future technologies.
Unravelling the mechanisms that lead to the development of healthy
brains should help scientists tackle currently incurable diseases
of the nervous system such as autism, epilepsy and schizophrenia
(to name but a few), discover more about the processes that cause
the uncontrolled growth associated with cancer and develop possible
treatments. Building Brains provides a highly visual and readily
accessible introduction to the main events that occur during neural
development and the mechanisms by which they occur. Aimed at
undergraduate students and postgraduates new to the field, who may
not have a background in neuroscience and/or molecular genetics, it
explains how cells in the early embryo first become neural, how
their proliferation is controlled, what regulates the types of
neural cells they become, how neurons connect to each other, how
these connections are later refined under the influence of neural
activity including that arising from experience, and why some
neurons normally die. Key Features: * A concise illustrated guide
focusing on the core elements of current understanding of neural
development, emphasising common principles underlying developmental
mechanisms and supplemented by suggestions for further reading. *
Text boxes throughout provide further detail on selected major
advances, issues of particular uncertainty or controversy and
examples of human diseases that result from abnormal development. *
A balanced mammalian/non-mammalian perspective, drawing on examples
from model organisms including the fruit fly, nematode worm, frog,
zebrafish, chick, mouse, ferret, cat, monkey and human, and
emphasising mechanisms that are conserved across species. *
Introduces the methods for studying neural development including
genetics, transgenic technologies, advanced microscopy and
computational modeling, allowing the reader to understand the main
evidence underlying research advances. * Student-friendly, full
colour artwork reinforces important concepts; an extensive glossary
and definitions in page margins help readers from different
backgrounds; chapter summaries stress important points and aid
revision. * Associated Website includes a complete set of figures
from the textbook.
In a five-to-four ruling, the Supreme Court in Citizens United v.
FEC invalidated two provisions of the Federal Election Campaign Act
(FECA). It struck down the long-standing prohibition on
corporations using their general treasury funds to make independent
expenditures. As a result of the Court's ruling, it appears that
federal campaign finance law does not limit corporate and, most
likely, labour union use of their general treasury funds to make
independent expenditures. This book examines campaign finance with
its relation to the Citizens United States Supreme Court case.
"Having lost our 17-year old daughter (our only child) in a car
accident, I know the grief and devastation that result from the
death of someone you love. When walking through grief, it can be so
overwhelming that it feels as if water is filling your lungs and
you cannot breathe. Through the experience of his personal loss,
Tom Mason takes you through a journey that begins with darkness and
ends with hope. Whether you are the one who has experienced the
loss of a loved one or the friend of someone who is grieving, the
practical suggestions at the end of each chapter will help you move
through the Valley of Grief." - Ellis F. Goldstein, Director,
Ministry Partner Development, Campus Crusade for Christ
International "When the Lord took home my beloved wife after over
62 wonderful years together, I was greatly helped by Tom's book. I
highly recommend it." - Jack Ailes, Lincoln, Nebraska "Men, as I
explore in my book, Different by Design, are indeed unique from
women. It is part of the Creator's glorious design. Now at last, a
book for men who grieve. Read it, share it, give it away to any man
who has suffered loss. They will find Tom Mason a friend who truly
understands their pain and their journey beyond the Valley " - Dr.
H. Dale Burke, Author of Different by Design, Founder, Dale Burke
Leadership, Senior Pastor, First Evangelical Free Church of
Fullerton, California Tom Mason is a founding member and elder of
Evanston Bible Fellowship in Evanston, Illinois. He has served for
many years on the faculty of Northwestern University in the
Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He is well
acquainted with "The Valley of Grief," having lost his wife of 31
years, Karen, to cancer. His healing process and suggestions for
others who find themselves (or friends) in "The Valley of Grief"
are the subject of this book.
"This is a well-written and well-organized treatment of a very important topic. I enjoyed reading it and gained some new insights and ideas. The explanations are clear and detailed and the examples are very helpful. The Ethics of Information Management is unique with its total focus on information and privacy. This is a critical area and this book makes a fine contribution." --Ernest A. Kallman, Research Fellow, Center for Business Ethics, Bentley College "At this stage in the information age, at this point in our understanding of issues and our understanding of the relation between ethics and information, any book that raises our awareness and sense of responsibility is worth publishing. Ethics of Information Management definitely does that." --Martha L. Hale, School of Library and Information Management, Emporia State University "This book breaks new ground in innovatively introducing the issues involved in information ethics to a business school curriculum. Cases are used throughout to identify the issues with numerous references back to each case to identify ways of reasoning, situations in which policies and procedures can help, and situations in which laws and professional codes are useful or not. There are many nuggets of information and ways of looking at situations that will assist readers in identifying the issues and stakeholders, assessing alternatives and their ramifications, and making informed, ethical decisions throughout their careers." --Sue Conger, Management Information Sciences, Southern Methodist University The authors to the second volume in the Sage Series in Business Ethics provide ways of thinking about information and the new responsibilities engendered by its acquisition, processing, storing, dissemination, and use. The Ethics of Information Management provides a set of concepts, methods, arguments, and illustrations designed to sharpen the reader's ethical focus. Organized into three sections, the first part of the book provides motivation and conceptual background for the volume as a whole. Part II focuses on fundamental concepts about ethics, including a description of the process of ethical thinking and a range of theories and principles that can be used in ethical situations. In the final chapters, the concepts of information, and the need for ethics and ethical thinking, are applied to the various levels of the social system to which they pertain: individual and professional, organizational and societal, or systemic. Intended primarily for those who are, or will soon become, information professionals, The Ethics of Information will also be of interest to others concerned about what those who handle information do and how it affects them.
