The Ukraine Crisis and EU Foreign Policy Roles - Images of the EU in the Context of EU-Ukraine Relations (Hardcover): Natalia... The Ukraine Crisis and EU Foreign Policy Roles - Images of the EU in the Context of EU-Ukraine Relations (Hardcover)
Natalia Chaban, Ole Elgstroem
R2,970 Discovery Miles 29 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examines how, within foreign policy, perceptions are a reflection of an actor's conception of status, credibility and legitimacy assigned to the Self and the Others. Perceptions of the Self and Other and their roles in international relations are also informed by images of superiority, intent and affinity. Perceptions may change over time and under the impact of dramatic events. Chapters explore the perceptions of both sides of EU-Ukraine relations, and propose a new set of concepts to highlight internal and external role incongruences, including: perception gaps, expectations-performance gaps and hope-performance gaps. A differentiation between cognitive, emotive and normative elements of images helps to explain role conflicts. The book further offers a comparison of EU self-images and Ukrainian expectations and perceptions in four areas of external actions of the EU: as an international leader and global and regional power, a partner for Ukraine, a peace mediator and a public diplomacy actor. Scholars and students of international relations, European politics, and EU foreign policy will find this book a useful resource. It will also benefit those studying political communication, as the book considers conceptual metaphor theory in its application to the studies of images and perceptions in international relations and communication about complex political events and actors.

Images and Strategies for Autonomy - Explaining Swedish Security Policy Strategies in the 19th Century (Hardcover, 2000 ed.):... Images and Strategies for Autonomy - Explaining Swedish Security Policy Strategies in the 19th Century (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Ole Elgstroem
R2,874 Discovery Miles 28 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do small states approach their security problems? What types of strategic instruments exist for small states, and when and why are certain strategies chosen rather than others? The security of `weak' states is problematic, demanding trade-offs in the decisions made. Using 19th century Swedish security policy as an example, it is argued here that small states, in their pursuit of security and autonomy, face a dilemma between abandonment and entrapment, leading to a choice between balancing between great powers or making an approach to one of them. This hard choice confronts both non-aligned and allied states. It is also argued that a focus on the images of decision makers is required as a complement to traditional realist theory in order to gain an in-depth understanding of small state security decisions. This book is special in its focus on small, non-aligned states. Most studies on balance-of-power behaviour limit their analysis to alignment decisions. The study also expands the domain of image constructs by introducing perceived regime characteristics into the analysis, besides images of power and intentions. Audience: Scholars and students interested in foreign policy analysis, particularly small-state behaviour. The book points to the importance of beliefs and ideas in security policy.

European Union Negotiations - Processes, Networks and Institutions (Paperback): Ole Elgstroem, Christer Joensson European Union Negotiations - Processes, Networks and Institutions (Paperback)
Ole Elgstroem, Christer Joensson
R1,496 Discovery Miles 14 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The EU policy process is dependent on negotiations as a mode of reaching agreements on, and implementing, common policies. The EU negotiations differ from traditional international negotiations in several respects and this book presents a detailed analysis of the processes while examining their distinguishing features.
The authors explore the variety of negotiation processes, the continuity and institutionalization of negotiation processes as well as the involvement of a variety of actors besides governments, often linked in informal networks. Going beyond the common distinctions based on issue-areas or the EU as negotiation arena as opposed to negotiating actor externally, the authors explore the impact of different stages in the policy process and the nature of the external negotiating partner.

The European Union's Roles in International Politics - Concepts and Analysis (Paperback): Ole Elgstroem The European Union's Roles in International Politics - Concepts and Analysis (Paperback)
Ole Elgstroem; Series edited by Thomas Poguntke; Edited by Michael Smith
R1,502 Discovery Miles 15 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This new volume develops a conceptual framework for considering and evaluating the roles played by the EU in international politics, drawing upon the literatures of role analysis, international relations and European integration. It pays particular attention to five aspects of role analysis: role conceptions, origins of roles, role institutionalization, role performance and role impact. These form themes running through the volume and are dealt with in individual contributions as appropriate. It also presents fresh applications and empirical case studies that support the conceptual framework and demonstrate the uses of role analysis in relation to the EU and its international activities, and its capacity to inform investigation from different perspectives and standpoints. By taking this approach and by providing both conceptual and empirical argument, this book delivers an innovative perspective on the analysis of the European Union as an international actor, and on the ways in which EU actions are formed and have impact. It also establishes a research agenda based on rigorous development of the framework for role analysis, and demonstrates the ways in which this agenda might be furthered.

Development and Democracy - What Have We Learned and How? (Paperback): Ole Elgstroem, Goran Hyden Development and Democracy - What Have We Learned and How? (Paperback)
Ole Elgstroem, Goran Hyden
R1,488 Discovery Miles 14 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Development and Democracy confirms the robust relationship between levels of economic development and democracy, but suggests that globalization is a key variable in determining the tenuous nature of this relationship in the periphery of the world economy. It raises new questions about the role of social classes in democratization, and points to the importance of including the nature of the state as a factor in the study of democratization. A further important finding is that countries with mixed legal systems correlate less positively with democracy than do countries with more homogenous legal systems. Moreover, Development and Democracy shows conclusively that the way researchers design their studies has a major impact on their findings.
