Novice music teachers and music education students struggle to form
an identity that synthesizes 'musician' with 'music teacher,' and
to separate themselves from their prior experiences to think
critically about music-making and music instruction. Throughout
this text, readers are encouraged to both reject and reflect upon
their prior experience and are provided with new frameworks of
understanding about both music-making and music instruction, as
they form a new personal philosophy of musicianship and pedagogy.
Ultimately, the purpose of this text is to provide foundational
knowledge for subsequent learning as students become both musician
and music pedagogue.
Dr. Lee P. Brown, one of America's most significant and respected
law enforcement practitioners, has harnessed his thirty years of
experiences in police work and authored Policing in the 21st
Century: Community Policing. Written for students, members of the
police community, academicians, elected officials and members of
the public, this work comes from the perspective of an individual
who devoted his life to law enforcement. Dr. Brown began his career
as a beat patrolmen who through hard work, diligence and continued
education became the senior law enforcement official in three of
this nation's largest cities. The book is about Community Policing,
the policing style for America in the Twenty-First Century. It not
only describes the concept in great detail, but it also illuminates
how it evolved, and how it is being implemented in various
communities throughout America. There is no other law enforcement
official or academician who is as capable as Dr. Brown of
masterfully presenting the concept of Community Policing, which he
pioneered. As a philosophy, Community Policing encourages law
enforcement officials, and the people they are sworn to serve, to
cooperatively address issues such as crime, community growth, and
societal development. It calls for mutual respect and understanding
between the police and the community. The book is written from the
perspective of someone whose peers identify as the "father" of
Community Policing, and who personally implemented it in Police
Departments under his command. It is a thoroughly amazing book that
has been heralded as a "must read" for anyone who has an interest
in law enforcement. Elected officials, academicians, leaders of the
nation's police agencies and members of the public will be
captivated by Dr. Brown's literary contribution.

In EFL contexts, an absence of chances to develop fluency in the
language classroom can lead to marked limitations in English
proficiency. This volume explores fluency development from a number
of different perspectives, investigating measurements and classroom
strategies for promoting its development.
This bookprovides readers with an overview of recent international
research and developments in the teaching and learning of modelling
and applications from a variety of theoretical and practical
perspectives. There is a strong focus on pedagogical issues for
teaching and learning of modelling as well as research into
teaching and practice. The teaching of applications of mathematics
and mathematical modelling from the early years through primary and
secondary school and at tertiary level is rising in prominence in
many parts of the world commensurate with an ever-increasing usage
of mathematics in business, the environment, industry and everyday
life. The authors are all members of the International Community of
Teachers of Mathematical Modelling and Applications and important
researchers in mathematics education and mathematics. The book will
be of interest to teachers, practitioners and researchers in
universities, polytechnics, teacher education, curriculum and
policy. "
This book investigates the life and world of Bede (c. 673-735),
foremost scholar of the early Middle Ages and 'the father of
English history'. It examines his notable feats, including
calculating the first tide-tables; playing a role in the creation
of the Ceolfrith Bibles and the Lindisfarne Gospels; writing the
earliest extant Old English poetry and the earliest translation of
part of the Bible into English; and composing his famous
Ecclesiastical History of the English People, with its single
dating system. Despite never leaving Northumbria, Bede also wrote a
guide to the Holy Land. Michelle P. Brown, an authority on the
period, describes new discoveries regarding Bede's handwriting, his
research programme and his previously lost Old English translation
of St John's Gospel, dictated on his deathbed.
Synthesizing theory, personal research, and prior studies on
interest groups and other lobbies, William P. Browne offers a new,
insightful overview of organized political interests and explains
how and why they affect public policy.
Drawing on his extensive experience researching interest groups,
Browne assesses the impact that special interests have long had in
shaping policy. He explains how they fit into the policymaking
process and into society, how they exercise their influence, and
how they adapt to changing circumstances.
Browne describes the diversity of existing interests --
associations, businesses, foundations, churches, and others -- and
explores the multidimensional tasks of lobbying, from disseminating
information through making financial contributions to cultivating
the media. He shows how organized interests target not just the
public and policymakers but even other interest groups, and how
they create policy niches as a survival strategy. He also looks at
winnable issues, contrasts them with more difficult ones, and
explains what makes the difference.
"Groups, Interests, and U.S. Public Policy" is a serious study
written in a lighthearted tone. It offers political scientists a
new theory of how and why interest groups influence public policy
while it enlightens students and general readers about how policy
is actually shaped in America.

Temporary protection from fairly traded imports under the World
Trade Organization (WTO) typically refers to a national
government's use of a 'safeguard' tariff, quota or tariff rate
quota. Safeguard provisions allow a WTO member's national
government to investigate whether a domestic industry is injured
because of fairly traded, but imported goods; and then impose a
temporary unilateral import restriction that would otherwise be in
violation of market access commitments. This book presents some of
the key theoretical and empirical research articles in the
economics, legal and policy literature examining the structure and
use of such temporary import protection programmes. This insightful
collection will be an important reference source for economists and
researchers interested in international trade policy and the rules
of the underlying WTO system.
This open access book is based on selected presentations from Topic
Study Group 21: Mathematical Applications and Modelling in the
Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at the 13th International
Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME 13), held in Hamburg,
Germany on July 24-31, 2016. It contributes to the theory, research
and teaching practice concerning this key topic by taking into
account the importance of relations between mathematics and the
real world. Further, the book addresses the "balancing act" between
developing students' modelling skills on the one hand, and using
modelling to help them learn mathematics on the other, which arises
from the integration of modelling into classrooms. The
contributions, prepared by authors from 9 countries, reflect the
spectrum of international debates on the topic, and the examples
presented span schooling from years 1 to 12, teacher education, and
teaching modelling at the tertiary level. In addition the book
highlights professional learning and development for in-service
teachers, particularly in systems where the introduction of
modelling into curricula means reassessing how mathematics is
taught. Given its scope, the book will appeal to researchers and
teacher educators in mathematics education, as well as pre-service
teachers and school and university educators
An examination of a number of English women novelists who portrayed
the crises and conflicts in the development of the female
consciousness as a response to the anomalies of the rapidly
changing world of the early twentieth century when opportunities
for self-expression and fulfilment were beginning to open up for
women but nineteenth-century values and prejudices still widely
prevailed. May Sinclair, Radclyffe Hall, Rosamond Lehmann, Antonia
White and Dorothy Richardson are seen as outspoken and innovative
writers often marginalised or ignored by serious criticism.
